Saw franchise player Tobin Bell has told Bloody Disgusting that there will be an eighth and perhaps even a ninth movie in the Jigsaw Killer saga after Saw VI hits cinemas next October. Not much of an announcement, granted, but I’m mystified by it and maybe someone out there in cyberspace can clue me up.
You see, my first assignment after being inducted into the OWF team back in March was Saw-related. The mission: travel to Thorpe Park and interview one of the producers behind the franchise, who was in England to open a Saw ride at Britain’s third largest theme park.
The whole thing eventually came to nothing, but the night before I had rushed off to my video club to rent the five existing films in the hope that it would help me to come up with some worthwhile questions.
I was mildly entertained by the first film, originally released in 2004. It managed to create a spooky atmosphere and had a decent twist at the end. The second movie had little novel to add and was barely passable. After Saw III I simply gave up. “Tedious and predictable” would be a friendly way of describing the experience.
Now, I have no doubt what motivates the likes of Bell and Burg when they dream of bringing forth Saw IX. People gotta eat. What stumps me is that this kind of drivel continues to draw enough of an audience to keep the franchise going.
Who are these people? And why do they keep coming back for more scenes of humans being tortured in increasingly convoluted ways? Is this franchise anything other than pornography for sadists?

uh, Alex. in your post you said “Saw VI” next october, and then previously said Tobin confirmed there may be an 8th, and 9th! But nowhere in the article you wrote did i see 7 or VII. did i miss something?
@nedd
The above link is incorrect, it should have been this one: http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/16389
In a nutshell: Saw VI is in production but the producers already have explicit plans for VII and VIII, and Tobin Bell has claimed that depending on how those do there might even be a ninth film.
Hope that answers your question.
Uh, no, that’s totally incorrect. According to the correct info I’ve gathered (through people sharing invertiews with Tobin Bell online), according to Tobin, they’re working on ideas for VII, but they don’t know if it will happen. As stated before, it’ll all depend on how the current film does at the box office. If VI goes over well, they’ll then execute their plans for VII. And if VII goes over well, then they’ll do VIII. They’ve stated taht “as long as teh fans want more, they’ll continue to make Saw films.” Tobin also said that if they go beyond VI, then VIII will probably end up being the end of the series. They’ll still have some pieces of the puzzle that could be filled in with VII and VIII, but then VIII would more than likely deliver that finality to the series. Honestly, being a HUGE Saw fan (I love every film and how far this series has come, especially when compared to other horror film franchises), I would love to see the series reach VIII and then stop. I very strongly HATE the typical idea of a trilogy, or double trilogy, and REALLY DON’T want to see Saw have a triple trilogy. The whole trilogy thing is old school. Part 1 is independent altogether and could serve as a stand-alone film, then part 2 and 3 act like part 1 and 2 of one single story (always connected somehow, whether minor or major). I would love to see Saw break away from the trilogy idea and end with 8. That way, it’s not a double trilogy with a spin-off (7 films), or a triple trilogy (9 films). VIII just seems like the ideal number for Saw (don’t get me wrong, I’ll still love teh series if it actually goes beyond VIII. If it did, I’d then look for X as the final film Saw X sounds better for the end than Saw IX does for some inexpicable reason) (I once heard from a friend of mine (back when I first found out IV was being made, around that March), who’s close friends with someone who works closely with some of the people who make the Saw films, taht they were planning to make up to 8 films. (all people involved are very reliable sources who are totally serious when it comes to Saw) That sounded totally cool to me, and like an ideal number to reach.) So, there’s the correct information. If oyu want to find out about my sources, email me at badams1990@yahoo.com (make the subject read “Saw Article Source Info” so I’ll know it’s you), and I’ll be happy to get back to you with my list of sources.
I absolutely love this franchise. But why do people come for more you say? This franchise is just so twisted. Yes the killings are predictable, but the plot is just amazing. You can never predict what happens next, and the endings always leave you with more suspense and then you hope the series continues. I believe Saw will continue it’s franchise for a while because so many questions are left unanswered. This is my favorite franchise out of any other.
