Mystery man J.J. Abrams told fans at the Con that the much discussed Cloverfield 2 would not be a “literal sequel” if it ever gets off the ground - fueling the argument that the movie would be set at the same time as the original just from a different handheld p.o.v.
“There’s something we’re playing with now that may or may not happen. There’s an idea we have that plays with… it’s not a literal sequel.
Cloverfield director Matt Reeves also confirmed he would be back on board for a potential sequel.
Which sounds all very exciting but it wouldn’t quite have that hard hitting original concept which grabs you and made $40 million in it’s opening weekend.
It would essentially be the same story, just with different characters. Which is fine and all, but I think J.J. might possibly be able to cook something a little different up here. Maybe delete the handheld gimmick altogether?

There will be a sequel. It will be half the budget with a dollar discount creative team. And Cloverfield 3 starring Dean Cain will premiere on the Sci-Fi Channel in 2011.
I liked Cloverfield alot, but as we all know by now the film received a love it or hate it reaction among moviegoers. Personally I don’t think a sequel will ever get made as there’s just not enough people clammering for it, despite the fact that film was very profitable!
Cloverfield was the monster/action movie I had been waiting on. When I first saw the previews I was very interested and the movie was no let down. I saw it twice in the theaters and was amazed at the response it got from viewers. People just didn’t get it. I thought it was great. This movie made me a JJ Abrams fan. Can’t wait to see what he does with star trek.
