Chuck Russell turns on the NORTHERN LIGHTS

It’s not a restart/reimagining/reboot of Phillip Pullman’s first novel in the His Dark Materials series - instead it’s an action thriller set around death defying aeroplane stunts.

Variety say Chuck Russell (The Mask, The Scorpion King) will helm Northern Lights from a script he is co-writing with Duane Adler (Step Up) and David Ellison, who is actually the 25 year old kid of Oracle founder Larry Ellison who is partly financing the film.

This connection with aviation is something that has already got Ellison a role in the biz as he had a brief role in Flyboys and he may end up with a similar part here.

Northern Lights will follow the adventures of three young pilots who compete against each other to be the best at extreme flying.

“We’ll be incorporating real-time, world class aerobatic performances with new visual effects technologies that will put the audience right in the pilot’s seat,” Russell said.

Devlin said: “Chuck has a complete grasp on how to bring the tremendous aerial action sequences to life, which complements a rich story.”

Didn’t get to see Flyboys, so I probably won’t see this one either. For some reason I think Hayden Christensen will get a part in this? Can anyone think why I might have that premonition (I’m not trying to be clever, I just honestly don’t know why).

Still no confirmation as to whether Russell will be helming the adaptation of the comic character Mandrake as his next film with Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the lead role.
