At the 11th hour, China have finally secured a deal to allow The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor to open in Asian territories.
Despite being filmed and set in the country, with some major Asian stars (Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh) and dealing with Chinese history which could easily bost the economy and profile of the China around the time of the Bejing Olympics, was surprisingly set to be banned from the country because it dealt with a big taboo for the culture - movies dealing with Ghosts.
The film will open in Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore on July 31st, the U.S. on August 1st and in the U.K. on August 18th. A release around that time in China is expected for what will be a wide release.
Bill Kong, producer and head of Universal’s distribution outlet in Hong Kong and China said…
“The exact date is a matter of my commercial judgment,” Kong said. “The best date might be right after the Olympic Games (Aug. 8-24). You can’t publicize or market a movie during the Games, as people’s attention will be elsewhere.”
