Variety report that Revolution Films are developing a trilogy of films based on the notorious serial killer Peter Sutcliffe of the 70’s and 80’s who terrorised the North East of England and was dubbed “The Yorkshire Ripper”, after killing no less than 13 women and seriously injuring many more.
He would be questioned nine times by police in a six year span as the killings terrorised the nation and dominated the press but each time they never seriously thought of him as a suspect, until he was finally caught and confessed to his crimes in 1981.
He claimed it was “God’s Will” for him to murder the innocent victims. He has now served 27 years of multiple life sentences and will only leave jail in a hearse.
The events are all accounted for in David Peace’s “Red Riding Quartet” of books which the films will be based on..
The first novel Ninteen Seventy Four will be directed by Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane) which will be followed by Nineteen Eighty from James Marsh (Man on Wire) and Ninteen Eighty Three by Anand Tucker (And When Did You Last See Your Father?).
All three directors have worked with Film4 previously, with the total budget of the project set at $10 million. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas scribe Tony Grisoni adapted the novel for screen, which is actually expected to receive a television run before making it’s way into theatres.
Casting is now underway.
Writer Peace has also got his book The Damned United, based on football legend Brian Clough’s turbulent time at Leeds United in the works for a feature film, probably due out next year.
