Cassandra’s Dream trailer

11.jpgI found it really strange that after one of Woody Allen’s greatest works of cinema (Match Point) his next movie which was also set in London and starred Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson and British thesp Ian McShane (Scoop) didn’t get a U.K. theatrical release. Late last year I had to actually import a Region 1 DVD to see it and when I did… well I kinda could see why it didn’t make it across the shore. The movie sucked.

So then comes Allen’s next film Cassandra’s Dream which again is set in London and has a very British cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell, Tom Wilkinson and a supporting group full of Brits. I don’t believe there is an American or a foreigner in site and of course the movie yet again won’t be coming out in this country.

What makes things even more strange is that Woody Allen’s films notoriously perform better in Europe than they do in the U.S.

The trailer for Cassandra’ Dream is online now. Can’t say it looks all that great. McGregor and Farrell aren’t convincing enough with their forced accents and the footage seems to be all over the joint. It looks more serious than Scoop which is definitely a good thing and I like the general idea of the movie but the trailer doesn’t make me desperate to see it.

Remember this movie struggled to get picked up at Cannes… and maybe there’s a reason why that was the case.

Cassandra’s Dream opens in a limited U.S. release in November, but it does open in some parts of Europe in October.
