I just heard about this today, sad news.
Bud Elkins, a stunt man who made a career out of doubling for Steve McQueen (at least when McQueen could be convinced that the stunt would be too dangerous for him!) passed away at the weekened of natural causes, aged 77.
Elkins who did some of the driving stunts in Bullit and did uncredited work on McQueen’s The Towering Inferno, The Cincinnati Kid and even worked on the Bond movie Diamonds are Forever will forever be remembered for one famous jump in The Great Escape, where Steve McQueen is desperately trying to get away from the Nazi’s on his motorcycle.
McQueen did much of the driving here… except the jump itself which was all Elkins…
