Bruce Willis to work with director Oliver Stone for first time

Bruce WillisA movie about a tough real-life situation or a serious and world changing event does not guarantee success. Oliver Stone, the veteran director who has tackled many atrocities and famous events down the years will tell you that, many of his movies being not just hit or miss at the box office, but critically too.

Out of the two 9/11 movies last year, I praised United 93 for it’s tone and non-glamorising of not only the characters involved on the terrible day but also the event itself whereas World Trade Center on the other hand, I found difficult to watch. Not because it handled 9/11 but because it made into almost into a Hollywood disaster movie.

So that brings us to Stone’s next movie Pinkville, which deals with the aftermath investigation of the My Lia massacre in 60’s Vietnam. Stone is in final talks with United Artists to finance the $40 million deal which will see Channing Tatum star but Sean Penn seems to have dropped out since we first reported on this movie in June.

His replacement…. Bruce Willis…. who will be working with Stone for the first time in his career says Variety.

Willis will play Army Gen. William R. Peers, who supervised the investigation into the massacre by U.S. soldiers of as many as 500 My Lai villagers, most of them unarmed women, children and elderly.

Tatum will play Hugh Thompson, a helicopter pilot who, upon realizing what was happening below, put a stop to the killing by placing his craft between gunmen and the few villagers who were left, and telling his two shipmates to fire on the soldiers if they shot any more people. They airlifted the survivors and reported the carnage to superiors.

Finally Bruce Willis signs up to a movie that will stretch his acting chops. He’s been static for a good couple of years now, I would love to see him blow us away here with his presence and stature in a serious drama.

Oh, and if your wondering why the movie is titled Pinkville then wonder no more as it relates to a description on the military map of the region where My Lia lies.
