I’m not too sure of the truth behind the rumour, but Brad Pitt is reportedly in talks to play arch-nemesis Moriarty in the sequel to the ludicrous looking Guy Ritchie helmed Holmes. Script writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney (behind the forthcoming Jeff Daniels superhero buddy movie Paper Man) have been more firmly attached to the project by The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Biz Blog.
I’m not usually one for rumours, but this one seems too wierd to be true surely. Pitt hasnt worked as a bona-fide villain since Kalifornia, and that character was a million miles away from the traditional evil of Moriarty- but then Ritchie isnt one for coherence and a more traditional casting choice: personally I’d go for Sir Ben Kingsley every time,- even despite his tendency to ham to the max when it comes to villains (Thunderbirds, anyone?). Or how about Tim Roth? Surely it’s time he made some new waves in the business?
Stranger things have happened. Who would you like to see play Moriarty?

Hi Simon, Why are you saying that the new Sherlock Holmes movie looks ludicrous?? In fact the new movie is alot like the books and short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes was a puglist. He was one of the first western martial artist. He was a master at stick fighting, Baritsu, the sword and the gun. Holmes was not the clean perfectly dressed Victorian that the old movies made him out to be. When he would get depressed or not on a case, he was kind of a slob. Holmes never backed away from a fight. If he needed to, he’d fight. It is described in the books.Holmes was not an older man (like Basil Rathbone) he and Watson are described as being in their late 30’s early 40’s. Holmes never wore an Iverness cape, he never smoked a curved pipe( Gillette did that so his face could be seen while on stage), Holmes never wore a Deerstalker hat (the books say that Holmes wore a hat). Holmes also did not say “Elementary My Dear Watson” (he only said Elementary alot). Holmes was thin-Robert dropped his weight to 140lbs. to play Holmes. Holmes was tall-Robert wore 4 inch risers in his shoes to make him over 6 foot tall. So, it’s all pretty close so far…. The things you are used to were made up in the old movies and TV shows. Holmes was not a snootty Brit either, he had a sense of humor about him also. As for Watson, he was young and tall and thin (not Nigel Bruce etc.) and not a buffoon. He was a surgeon and a war veteren. He also never backed away from a good fight. So far still really close…. As for Irene Adler, Yeah I know-shes only in 10 pages in one book. The way she is described though, Holmes did have some type of feelings for her – other than respect. Holmes always carried a photograph of Irene with him wherever he went. This way she was always close and he could look at her. I think that’s where they get the feeling for the movie. Oh, and the redone script (unless they changed it again). Holmes and Irene do not have sex when she handcuffs him to the bed. (Spoiler! OOOPS Sorry). If they didn’t change it, she agresses Holmes and kisses him, seduces him, strips him and gets him into bed. She handcuffs him and steals his clothes! Irene needed to be dressed as a man for the next scene. She just leaves him there and steals his clothes. She actually out does him again and he looks stupid. Supposedly Holmes’ virtue-virginity (whatever) doesn’t get tarnished. She seduces him so she can get his clothes. (unless the script changed again). This is still pretty much going along with Holmes not being a ladies man or sleeping with a woman. Oh, Simon it’s not ludicrous, in fact it comes really close to the actual books and short stories. Conan Doyle and Alexandre Dumas are my favorite authors (Dumas did all of the 3 Musketeer books). I have read and studied them all, I grew up with them. Yeah, I am old(43 and counting). I hate that everyone feels the need to follow the old movies and shows. They weren’t close to the Holmes from the books either. Give other things a chance my dear Simon. As for who I’d rather see play Moriarity? God not Brad Pitt. He would be just horrible. He’s really not that great of an actor-he’s just over rated. Isn’t Pitt just basically eye-candy anyway? I mean looks can only do so much. He’s Angelinas’ arm-candy right??? So, Simon, darling I have one that you didn’t mention that I have always loved. I have always loved Tim Curry. He can be so evil and then be so charismatic. I love The Rocky Horror Picture Show and IT scared me to death, and he’s done so many more. I guess I’d chose him. He is a good character actor as well. I think he could be great. Ok, remember to give new things a chance and take care-Bye Simon.
Hi Anna, I didnt mean the film abandons the true authenticity of Conan Doyle’s works- I like the move away from a stuffy Holmes figure. My problem is with the visual style of the film (or a least the hints that the trailer gave away). Michael Bay has super-slo-mo, Guy Ritchie has bullet-time style slow-motion passages (Im thinking of the boxing scene) that are so over-used in his films that they begin to look a little like a tongue in cheek in joke.
I dont know, Im just not turned on by the prospect…
And I love Tim Curry- good choice. I wish he could reprise his Rocky Horror role on the big screen again, but he doesnt seem to be doing much these days,
