The last weekend before the long Summer season and it was two comedies duking it out for first place, with the more female-centric Baby Mama coming out on top. An $18 million opening (it was made for $30 million) is a good one. The comedy about two women on a class divide coming together for a surrogate pregnancy continued the success of “knocked up” movies being box office gold over the last year or so. Amy Poehler & Tina Frey starred… with supporting roles from Steve Martin and Sigourney Weaver.

In second place was the Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay yarn once again starring John Cho and Kal Penn which has already surpassed it’s budget with a $14 million opening, $2 million more than it was made for. I have nothing against these movies, not quite my thing but there ya go…

The other release of note was the Ewan McGregor/Hugh Jackman/Michelle Williams sex thriller Deception which quite frankly had flop written all over it’s marketing, despite the wealth of talent there. It opened in 10th spot with a grossly disappointing $2.23 million. McGregor even said as much - complaining that the studio “fucked up” already with the title and that they couldn’t have come up with something better. The film was titled both The List and The Tourist during it’s production but it’s 12% rotten rating on RT would indicate that another title might not have helped what most believe to be a terrible movie.

Elsewhere, Forgetting Sarah Marshall has now passed it’s budget by $5 million, The Forbidden Kingdom ($38.2 million) and Nim’s Island ($39 million) will hit $40 million domestic very soon indeed.

Quiet weekend at the box office then. But this was to expected when several generations of men will be out of pocket next week with both Grand Theft Auto IV and Iron Man are released worldwide.
