Because we like to bring you the latest news possible here at Obsessed With Film, on Saturday afternoon… 1 and a half days before the Internet Movie Community went mad over the news… we posted the story about Nikki Frenke’s article concerning Jeff Robinov’s alleged comments of…
“We are no longer doing movies with women in the lead.”
The decision had apparently come after the miserable failures this year of:
Nicole Kidman’s The Invasion (which was WB’s fault for hiring the wrong director to go with the vision they wanted),
Jodie Foster’s The Brave One (which never looked like the type of movie that would attract a big audience),
Hilary Swank’s The Reaping (which looked bad)
We spoke about this on Saturday but we didn’t really make a big deal of it without any official confirmation from anyone.
Cue… Monday morning.
The Movie Blog wrote a lengthy article on why we should boycott Warner Brothers for the comments, and that Robinov should be fired, and he challenged the rest of the community to boycott talking about WB’s films, which at the end of the day was never going to happen with The Dark Knight and Justice League of America getting so much coverage right now.
Again, we kept quite, not wanting to tackle the situation until we got a confirmation.
Finally after a lengthy period, Warner Brothers got back to Campea….
**NEW UPDATE**
After waiting for 9 hours, calling 2 different numbers and 3 email addresses, Warner Bros. Finally got back to me. A very nice woman from Corporate Communications got a hold of me (After my last message said that CBS News wanted to interview me tonight about the situation…THEN SUDDENLY they get a hold of me) and made this statement. It’s only fair to WB to openly share here with you what they said:
WB Rep – “Mr. Robinov never made that statement, nor is it his policy.”
TMB – “So are you saying it is not now, nor will be Warner Bros. policy to stop producing films with female leads?”
WB Rep – “Correct. That is not our policy. A blogger (assumably Nikki Finke) made a statement without giving us the opportunity to first respond.”
TMB – “All right, that’s all I needed to know. Thank you for calling me.”
Which sounded to me and everyone else around the Internet Movie Community as being a damage limitation backtrack after they saw how far this story was going.
HOWEVER
I’m a big advocate of innocent until proven guilty and if WB’s are saying he never said it, then why should we not believe them?
As far as the future of WB’s go we are going to be keeping a very close eye on what projects they green light in the future.
However there is a big problem with generally with the lack of female driven movies, especially the big blockbuster kind. Only really Resident Evil, Kill Bill and a few others (although I can’t think of any) have made it pretty big this decade, where things like Aeon Flux and Elektra have failed and you really have to wonder why this is so?
Is their a reason why we aren’t interested in seeing female-driven movies or is it just the fact that the studio’s only make terrible one’s so obviously we don’t see them. I mean after all, there’s an awful lot of crap male-driven movies too.

V for Vendetta was a WB movie with a female lead and while I’m not sure of its total gross I’m pretty sure it was not a flop.
Context is everything, which is something Nikki Finke doesn’t provide. Does she mean Joel Silver movies, comic book movies, action movies or ALL movies with a female lead?
I think Robinov means the higher end pictures so that probably means no Wonder Woman on the horizon.
Finke is pretty repugnant as a journalist but she has connections that lead me to believe this sentiment did come from the studio in some form. One thing is certain, they would never admit to saying this.
Oh yeah, Jennifer Garner was the best thing about The Kingdom, someone (not WB) give her a movie!
If a film is Written and Directed well it doesn’t matter who’s in the lead.
A good film is a GOOD film, A bad film Is a BAD film no getting round it.
It’s really nothing to do with the leads.
Look at the Kill Bill Films! Tey were done right,Very strong female leads, great films! There’s just so many bad writers in Hollywood right now.
Someone wants to get rid of Zak Penn and David Goyer to start with.
She was OK in the Kingdom Will, I don’t think she got enough to do though.
Her and Chris Cooper kinda got forgotten about for much of the flick.
Can’t help but feel Elektra will forever stop her getting lead action roles.
