“The Rat” has hinted that his upcoming reinvention of Beverly Hills Cop which will see Eddie Murphy reprise the role that transitioned him from a stand-up comedian into a real movie star, will be kinder to those kids out there and may even be a PG-13.
The original three movies were known for there R-Rated humor distinctly with heavy swearing from Murphy. But he’s older now, more restrained and this film will suit his current kid friendly merchandising persona…
Here’s what the dude told MTV…
“10-year-old kids, 12-year-old kids don’t really know the old ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’ So it’s an opportunity to make it new for kids,” Ratner said. “The same way it felt for me watching ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ when I was a kid, that’s what I want to do for kids today.”
He also mentions that it’s an honor to be working on a franchise that was one of his childhood favourites and that filming probably wouldn’t begin for 12 months.
So my original fears have almost been realised. It’s going to be Rush Hour 4 just with Eddie Murphy and whoever else they cast using the names from the original series of films and slightly different character traits.
This is Beverly Hills Cop IV: The Shrek Years and don’t you think this is a big FU to those who grew up or were adults when the original movies came out.

If this film ends up being a watered down version of what went before it won’t be getting my money.

Eddie! Try not giving a crap what your kiddie audience want. Beverly Hills Cop was NOT a kids movie – it was about an obnoxious, foul-mouthed detective playing against the rules. It was about a cop who didn’t care who he offended while trying to catch the bad guy who killed his friend. The fact that he also happened to be funny, charming and likeable despite this was due to your brilliant performance, foul mouth and all.
I was 14 when the original BHC came out on VHS, and I loved it. I also seem to be one of the few people who loved BHC2 as well. The formula was toned down for the 3rd movie, it sucked and it flopped.
The kids can have their Daddy Day Cares and their Shreks. Please can we have just one more movie made for adults? I fear that the Eddie Murphy of 48 Hours, Delirious, hell even Coming To America is dead, and all we have is this shell who insists on making abortions like Norbit for the 8 year old in his life…
FFUUUCCK YOUUU BRETT RATTNNERR. AND SHAME ON YOU EDDIE MURPHY. WATERING DOWN THIS FRANCHISE WILL NOT BRING MORE KIDS….IT’LL PROBABLY SUFFER MORE THAN ANYTHING…
WHY EDDIE, WHY
Have we forgotten how terrible the third movie was? And, not just terrible to be terrible, it seemed they went out of their way to make a watered down Axel Foley against a theme park backdrop. I don’t know how much more kiddie you can get than that. Plus, the series was never meant to attract a kid audience- that’s why it was rated R, correct? Eddie hasn’t been funny since Delirious or Raw, and his Oscar nod is evidence of the Academy’s penchant for overcompensating decades of racism- they’re just handing those things out to black actors like food stamps.
No thanks guys. You can keep your Beverly Hills Cop 4.
