The word is Reese Witherspoon has been approached to play Amelia Earhart in the now titled NIGHT AT THE MUSEM 2: ESCAPE FROM THE SIMTHSONIAN, which we now hear will be released on May 22nd 2009.
Earhart is of course the historical female aviator who mysteriously disappeared during a flight across the Pacific Ocean in 1937. She was declared dead two years later though her body was never found and is already the subject of a historical biopic with Hilary Swank set to lead and Phillip Noyce (PARTIOT GAMES, THE SAINT) set to helm.
Presumably there’s no rights issues stopping 20th Century Fox from using Earhart in the movie. It’s nice to see that the studio are using the small fortune they got for the first movie on enticing such a costly actress. Is she really worth it for a secondary part for a movie that will make a ton of cash without her anyway?
The whole crew (minus the three vets I would think) from the first movie are expected to return, including director Shawn Levy, lead Ben Stiller and Robin Williams. Cinematical claim they have spoken to Ricky Gervais who himself says he’s read the script and scheduling permitted, would love to return also.
The flick will be the first major Hollywood movie shot at the museum complex in Washington, D.C…
I thought the first movie had a really terrific concept and one they couldn’t possibly mess up, but somehow they did. How did NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM turn into a frikkin’ 3 day event?
And what was with that third act folks? They went for that easy way out of the screenplay when they had dug themselves into a hole that they couldn’t think of a logical way to get out of. If you have seen the film then you will know exactly what I’m talking about.
Let’s pray the screenwriters have realised what didn’t work in the first one and tweak the movie so it’s a little more tolerable for adults because it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that we could be entertained by this too.
