Beam Me Up McAvoy!
We’ve heard this rumor before but it’s getting another run today, in what is one of the slowest news day we’ve seen in a long time. According to The Scotsman (via Filmstalker), James McAvoy is confirmed for the role of Scotty, the ship’s engineer in Star Trek.
The 28 year old is certainly the right age for what they are looking for and being Scottish obviously helps. The casting seems a pretty obvious one for me, I mean how many good Scottish actors around that age are there? I thought he was great in The Last King of Scotland and can play naive quite well, which I guess will be a recurring theme with theme being the crew’s first mission.
This comes from an alleged source, so take that for what you will…
“McAvoy had to go through a full casting process - and was up against famous names and total unknowns.
“He was called back a couple of times before getting the phone call from one of the producers to say he had won the role.”
Even though McAvoy is pretty well known these days, don’t write the source off completely because it mentions he had to audition. This would seem pretty consistent with what we have heard about every other part in the movie and Abrams takes casting very seriously.
I trust Abrams in this department more than anything else. Look at Lost… amazingly cast… and I would expect the same for Star Trek.
