The first big movie victim that has fallen victim to the strike having already delivered the final script is ANGELS & DEMONS, the continuation of Robert Langdon’s historical adventures after last year’s blockbuster hit THE DA VINCI CODE.
Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman had been working all hours of the day putting together the script for Sony but it seems that there was a ton of problems with the final draft when it was handed in on the Nov. 1st deadline and it simply wasn’t wise to film it at the state it’s currently in.
Add to that, they have only cast Tom Hanks for the movie so far and a lengthy casting process just wasn’t at all viable with a February start date soon approaching.
This move seems sensible. The movie now has no definitive start date, but Sony Pictures have slapped a May 19th 2009 release slot (previously the movie was to open next Christmas) so they must be confident in securing all the pre-production aspects and the WGA strike ending for an early summer shoot.
Sony have claimed that none of their other productions will suffer the same fate, so Bond fans can sigh something of a relief as 007 screenwriter Paul Haggis had a similar tough deadline facing him with his completion of that script.
What this means now of course is that Tom Hanks is a free man. He has no movie pre-strike people!
Which film will frantically cast the A-Lister as most actors are currently locked in till the summer?
