Chris Nolan will soon be spending several months in the company of the charming, beautiful and highly talented Marion Cotillard this summer, as last week we heard she had been cast in his original science fiction movie Inception.
The significance of the time spent with Cotillard on his future casting decisions may become evident when pre-production really kicks in for Batman 3, because Cotillard fits all the criteria that you would be looking for in a Selina Kyle.
Aka a Catwoman, if you will.
She has amazing femme fatale eyes. The kind that even Bruce Wayne who won’t want to fall for a woman again after losing Rachel, will be hopeless to resist. In July we shall see her tame and fascinate Johnny Depp’s notorious gangster John Dillinger and help drive crazy Daniel-Day Lewis’ film director with her beauty in Nine.
She is that kind of special creature of feminine perfection. The ones that Raymond Chandler and Ian Fleming would write about.
She has a feistyness about her but also the down to Earth, girly natural laugh that Selina has in everyday life. Or at least she did in Batman Returns. Physically she is good (tall, in shape and flexible, a natural beauty) and well, we know she can act (she’s only a year out from winning a Best Actress Oscar).
She is French but then again, is that really a problem? Who says Catwoman has to be American anyway and I’m sure she could perfect an American accent in no time if it was really required. We should also note that her next movie Public Enemies, she worked opposite Christian Bale, which once again just adds to the almost inevitably about her casting.
Jett at Batman on Film put me onto the idea this morning, and I have to agree. If Catwoman is the road they are going down for the next movie (and I can’t see it being anything other than The Penguin, The Riddler, Catwoman… even with a Joker return) then there is absolutely no better audition than working directly with the man who is crafting that franchise.
Nolan already has shown he likes to keep things in the family, casting Christian Bale and Michael Caine in his magician thriller The Prestige, so soon after working with the duo in Batman Begins. We have also just seen Cillian Murphy cast in Inception, the third time Nolan will work with the British actor.
Time and time again, history proves that directors become attached to working with the same actors over time, especially ones at the top of their games (Scorsese/De Niro, Spielberg/Hanks, Burton/Depp, Hitchcock/Grant and Stewart). Cotillard will have to at least be considered if Catwoman is the next villain.
In fact as far back as August, well before anyone knew anything about Inception, Cotillard was already a fan favourite among Batman fans speculating on who they would like to see as the female anti-hero and sometime love interest. One of them was savvy enough to even come up with a fan-made photo…
Deviant Art then made a poster with Cotillard…
I repeat it’s not news, just something to think about and discuss this Monday morning.

Please…no Catwoman in Batman 3…please.
I would prefer The Riddler personally but I think there’s too much money to be made from Catwoman for Warner Bros. not to use the character, whether we like it or not.
And well, Bruce kinda has a gap now in his love life. A new femme fatale, either Selina Kyle or what I would much prefer, Talia Al Ghul (maybe played by Rachel Weisz?) would be an interesting avenue to explore.
How about Selina Kyle as just Selina Kyle, whilst Batman fights The Riddler. We don’t see Catwoman till No. 4?
You know what would be great?
The Riddler – in a “Seven”-like film.
Ras Al’Ghul (or whatever his name was…) turned Wayne into Batman.
The Joker turned him into the Dark Knight.
The Riddler will turn him into the Caped Crusader.
And the Caped Crusader is the “perfected” form of the crimehunting vigilante.
And then a fourth part…where he is the Caped Crusader – the “perfect” Batman or mainstream Batman we know from the majority of the comics.
Would be kinda a nice tranformation…
Am I the only person who thinks that concept art makes Catwoman look absolutely shite? That costume is bollocks and is just plainly not sexy enough for my liking.
I have to say I agree with the Riddler comments- and make it David Tennant- that creepy turn as Barty Crouch Junior in Harry Potter was fair indication that he could eat that role up. And he will have the nerd vote thanks to the Dr Who connection. I have a feeling they’d be more likely to go in the direction of someone with Indie credentials who is a little off-beat like Jay Baruchel though.
Anyway fuck all this cool Batman stuff, I want Alicia Silverstone back as Batgirl, and Chris O’Donnell as Robin or even better Nightwing. I love the camp.
I think Cotillard has the perfect voice for Catwoman, regardless of whether she needs an American accent. It’s seductive and softly spoken.
she would be good, no doubt. but i rate her so highly that i’d hate to see her sell out to Hollywood
Video Raider…
I’ve mentioned the Se7en esque plot several times before, it’s such an intriguing idea. Seeing Batman actually act like he’s “The World’s Greatest Detective “as Ra’s calls him so often in th comics.
Wouldn’t it be interesting if the seven killed are framed on the vigiliante Batman by The Riddler. That would be an interesting continuation of the last movie.
And Casey Affleck’s turn in ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES makes him my favourite choice for the part. Tennant, in Dr. Who fashion at least, would be too camp.
If he played it serious. I would love to see him give it a go.
and don’t forget, cotillard is also an expert on the moon landing and planes crashing into towers! that makes her the perfect catwoman. absolutely out of her stupid little airheaded mind.

Marion is a great pick for catwoman, but that costume in those photoshop pics are just CRAP! i hate it hate it hate it. she would have to show more skin, and theres too much on her face. she looks ridiculous
i’d prefer a reimagining of the riddler as well but catwoman is good too. and besides, she wouldn’t be the main villain anyways. DUH!
I still say Rachel comes back as Catwoman. Maggie Gylenhaal would be fantastic.
Marion Cotillard would be perfect, but the accent would be a bit of a giveaway as to her true identity.
As long as the third film isn’t another convoluted mishmash of previousand superior crime dramas, I don’t much care who the villain is.
I don’t want to see her. Not as a main villain. And if she isn’t, it’ll come off as her character being undeveloped.
