It was a busy last weekend of the year at the box office and the annual slow down as we venture towards a fresh new year didn’t stop studio’s from slotting in some important releases. However, it would mostly be the holdovers who would find the most success as the top three only swap around with each other and suffer just a small % drop from last week’s audience.
After ten days of release, Disney’s big budget adventure sequel NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS has now amassed $124 million and there’s little doubt that this franchise will continue for one more movie at least.
ALIVN AND THE CHIPMUNKS after 3 weeks of release has grossed $142.4 million and has now actually overtaken Will Smith’s I AM LEGEND to second place, but that’s only because so many people saw the apocalyptic movie on the first weekend of release and the Warner Brothers picture has now crossed the $200 million mark.
It’s one of the highest grossing movies of the year and I think a Will Smith-less sequel should not be ruled out for that one.
The big disappointment of the week was ALIEN VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM, the fun looking but shockingly reviewed sequel to one of the worst movies of 2004. Yes, it’s even said to be worse than Paul W.S. Anderson’s flick.
After a decent start with $9.5 million on Christmas Day (who the fuck saw that on Jesus’ birthday?) it quickly went sour and has now taken only $26.8 million over six days, which is over $10 million less than ALIEN VS. PREDATOR made on it’s opening weekend alone three years ago.
Elsewhere, JUNO proved to be a huge hit for an Indie film, grossing over $10 million and taking home the highest theatre per average. The movie has now grossed $25.7 million after less than a month. CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR continues to be a flop and is $40 million behind it’s production budget, so any significant profit will have to rely on a big oversea’s popularity.
Denzel Washington’s THE GREAT DEBATERS strange Christmas opening failed to attract an audience, and opened outside of the top 10 with a $13.5 million gross after nearly a week of release.
