Actors strike looming?

This time last year Hollywood and the T.V. world were locked into a writer’s strike which virtually crippled the television industry and left an undeniable mark on a lot of people’s careers and livelihoods, from key grips to p.a.’s.

It also caused many movies to shut down and changed the course of how other movies would be developed. Movies like Michael Mann’s PUBLIC ENEMIES out in the Summer starring Christian Bale and Johnny Depp came about when talent previously scheduled deals earlier in the year didn’t work out.

Last night Variety reported that we could be on the verge of a second strike in 12 months, this time from the Screen Actors Guild who are seeking strike authorization from it’s 120,000 members. The issue is the still the same, trying to figure out a deal both parties can agree on for how actors are paid for their distribution of their work in new media, i.e. the world wide web.

“Our leadership was optimistic that federal mediation would help to move our negotiations forward, but despite the Guild’s extraordinary efforts to reach agreement, the mediation was adjourned shortly before 1:00 a.m. today,” SAG said. “Management continues to insist on terms we cannot responsibly accept on behalf of our members.”

A 75% majority will be needed for a strike to happen.

Of course, after what happened with the Golden Globes last night, it will be interesting to see what happens here closer to the awards season.

I don’t think anyone would want to strike with the way the economy is these days.
