Across the Universe trailer

acrosstheuniversepubc.jpgIt’s happened again. I’ve just stumbled across a movie I knew absolutely nothing about, and it’s suddenly become something I’m really looking forward to seeing.

Across the Universe is the latest movie from Frida director Julie Taymor and is an original tale set around 1960’s America, with the rise of the Vietnamn war and the 60’s Peace Movement. The title comes from the title of a famous John Lennon record and by the looks of the trailer, the film has been influenced and will contain many references to The Beatles throughout.

The movie stars Jim Sturgess, Evan Rachel Wood and Joe Andersen with cameo’s from Eddie Izzard (as a strange circus owner!!), the beautiful Salma Hayek (sadly no scenes reminiscent of Frida) and U2 front man Bono.

The movie looks to be two different genre’s in one, and could prove to be a jolting effect if the film stays on the lives of the three characters for half of the movie’s running time before being going straight to Vietnam and the horrors of war, as the trailer indicates.

The movie comes out in September in the U.S. with no word on what release it will get over here in Britain. Thanks to Piper at Lazy Eye Theatre for the heads-up, I too can’t wait for this thing.

  1. I’ve read this movie was taken away from Taymor and recut, so we might not be getting her actual film when released until the DVD.

  2. There was some talk a few weeks ago when the trailer first emerged that Julie Taymor was having trouble with the production company after some initial poor feedback. They want the movie re-edited but Taymor isn’t going for it. Personally I have to agree that this looks amazing and I’m very interested in seeing it.

And considering the trailer has been playing in theaters with her name attached leads me to believe that maybe they’ve come to some sort of agreement. I only hope that this is the case. I’d hate to wait any longer to see it.
