A Superbad opening for The Invasion!

Posted by Matt Holmes

SuperbadThe summer really belongs to Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen. After teaming together for Knocked Up which did a way better than expected $30 million opening and became one of the best reviewed movies of the year, two months later they have another big hit on their hands with Superbad… an adolescent comedy which Rogen wrote & Apatow produced.

Two weeks of superb reviews, great trailers and some smart marketing/timing has shot Superbad to a $31.2 million opening, which is actually just a little more than Knocked Up. Made for $20 million, Superbad should prove to be a massive hit and I wouldn’t look too much into both movies being R-Rated. They just looked funny, nothing too raunchy or different about them.

We have spoke before about the debacle that is The Invasion many times now and I think we all saw this coming. The movie opened to $6 million, which is even less than the $3 million than I predicted. Warner Brothers messed this up $80 million movie badly and the sad thing is it shouldn’t have been that difficult, especially with the two lead stars they hired.

Might The Last Legion be the last attempt at adapting King Arthur to the big screen? An estimated $2.6 million opening shows that ‘gritty’ and ‘dark’ medieval versions of the legend aren’t marketable. I have a feeling the next King Arthur movie could be a full out fantasy epic, though convincing a studio to finance such a project is another thing.

Rush Hour 3 dropped 56% and made $21.8 million which wasn’t quite as big a drop as many expected and The Bourne Ultimatum added another $18.9 million to it’s $163.8 million domestic total.
