I really have no idea what to make of Southland Tales. It premiered over a year ago at Cannes and got absolutely slammed by critics. Any film that has been on the shelf for so long is either incredibly idiosyncratic and difficult to market, or it’s just plain bad.
I think Donnie Darko is a really excellent film and probably one of the most assured debuts from a writer/director I’ve ever seen. It’s one of those movies that you can’t get out of your head after the first viewing and I’m glad I saw it before it was somewhat hijacked by “Mad World” and acquired a rather rabid and scary fanbase. I had high hopes for Richard Kelly, but that enthusiasm has faded somewhat with Domino and the continuing delays of Southland.
Anyways, Film Ick have come across a clip of the film that features The Rock, Seann William Scott and Sarah Michelle Gellar discussing the apocalypse, the futuristic future and a highly ridiculous film pitch. Director Kelly has said the trailer will premiere in the first week of September (hey, that’s this week!) so we’ll soon be getting a more detailed look at Southland Tales.
