Media Rights Capital are looking to try and secure some finished reels before the expected industry strike in June. The studio have greenlit and will finance 8 movies for a total of $250 million all of which are quite big flicks in their own way.
Here is a breakdown of those 8…
Shorts - Robert Rodriguez
In the vain of Spy Kids, Rodriguez will write, direct and produce the movie about kids stumbling across a magical device. We have to presume if MRC want these done by June that this will be his next movie after Barbarella and will have a mighty quick production turn over to hit that deadline.
This Side of Truth - Ricky Gervais
Once again Ricky Gervais is keeping to his word and taking on projects that won’t make him a film star. Gervais will step behind the camera for the first time to handle This Side of Truth, a comedy set in the present day where lying doesn’t exist… until one guys invents it and uses it to get ahead in life. Veteran British director Matthew Robinson will help him out in the directing department as co-helmer.
Linha de passe - Walter Salles
From the Brazilian director of The Motorcycle Diaries and Dark Water comes a movie set in his home country about a group of brothers who struggle to escape from the slums they live in. This movie will also be co-directed, this time with the help pf Daniela Thomas who last contributed a segment to Paris je’taime.
Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho - Ryan Murphy
Anthony Hopkins (as Hitch) and Helen Mirren (his wife) will star in this movie that chronicles the trouble Hitchcock had with making Psycho. We actually talked about this movie back in February which was previously titled Alfred Hitchcock Presents after his great t.v. series. Ryan Murphy directs. He is the creator of Nip/Tuck and wrote and directed Running with Scissors.
Again, it’s another movie we already know about but it’s good to know it’s moving forward. Richard Kelly’s third movie after Donnie Darko and Southland Tales see’s him adapt an old episode of The Twilight Zone, with Cameron Diaz set to star. The movie shoots in December.
Foxcatcher - Bennett Miller
Miller’s first movie since Capote will be a drama about a paranoid schizophrenic who after building a training facility for Wrestling known as Team Foxcatcher, shot and killed Olympic gold medalist Dave Schulz. The movie is based on a true story from the mid 90’s and is from writer E. Max Frye.
Untitled Todd Field’s drama
Todd Field’s, the director of In the Bedroom and Little Children will begin working on a movie in the spring which we wrote, but currently the plot is being kept under-wraps.
Out of all them, my money is already taken for The Hitchcock movie (love the guy and Hopkins playing him is just a superb idea), The Box (good concept and I’m intrigued by this director), Foxcatcher (the story of Schulz is an interesting one and Capote was good) and maybe Ricky Gervais’ movie.
Kinda interesting to see what he will come up.

NONE of these has gotten me even a little interested.
Out of the bunch, the only one that has me mildly excited is Richard Kelly’s “The Box”.
