20th Century Fox win WATCHMEN case! – is the movie doomed for delay or destruction?

Some really sad news to report on Christmas Day.

Warner Bros. have lost the case for WATCHMEN. According to the New York Times, a judge has claimed he intends to rule that 20th Century Fox do own a copyright interest in the Alan Moore graphic novel which dates back to the late 1980’s. What this means for WATCHMEN is unclear at this point but Fox have previously made it known they seek to permanently block the movie from being released which now must be seen as a distinct possibility.

Judge Fees made the surprise announcement last week, some time before the trial is set to begin in January…

“Fox owns a copyright interest consisting of, at the very least, the right to distribute the ‘Watchmen’ motion picture,” the ruling said.

One of the likely scenario’s from all this is 20th Century Fox winning a free MASSIVE summer tentpole which they can release under their banner, despite all the hard work Warner Bros. have gone through, and reaping the majority if not all the rewards in the process.

Another interesting thing to consider is whether 20th Century Fox will have the final edit on Zack Snyder’s film and whether they will tweak and cut it however they like. How would Fox butcher a near 3 hour deconstruction of the superhero genre? That is scary.

More on this as it comes in. But if Fox aren’t willing to play ball with Warner Bros. in distributing the pic then don’t be surprised if WATCHMEN is blocked from release for years.

It would be foolish for FOX to keep the film from being released. The two companies could split the profits and still each make a bundle. And I seriously doubt that Warners would go uncompensated for their financial outlay; that would be unjust.

Fox was just waiting for something like this to happen so now they can say that a good super hero movie came from there studio line. They suck and they will find out just what people think about there studio soon.

Honestly, they’d be retarded not to release the movie. Its going to be a huge success if it gets released. I just hope that Fox doesn’t butcher the film itself to fit more into “mainstream” film standards of 1 1/2 to 2 hours running length.

More blame should be put on WB. Fox kept contacting them about not making the film, but they did it anyway. What will most likely happen is that they’ll have the film released with Fox making much more money off of it then WB. Fox needs it with the year they’ve been having. Never heard of a studio that turned a profit from a film because they didn’t make it.
