My good pal Ray e-mailed me this week letting me know that I was talking too much about X-MEN: WOLVERINE and not nearly enough about John Patrick Shanley’s drama DOUBT, based on his own successful play.
I don’t think Ray’s intent was to single out DOUBT (or X-MEN for that matter) but it was just a sign that we were talking too much about blockbusters and not enough about the serious works of cinema.
Truth be told, I probably haven’t spoken about DOUBT enough even though on the one occasion I did, I did so positively. Actually that’s not entirely true, I have spoke about the movie twice, the other time was to report that Natalie Portman originally turned down Amy Adams’ role because of the lack of sex involved but that doesn’t really count does it?
Part of the reason is that the movie doesn’t come out in the U.K. till February and what can you say really? It’s got Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, two of the best working actresses’ today and every year I love my shifty, sickening and sweaty Phillip Seymour Hoffman performance. Do you not remember this time last year me banging on about BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU’RE DEAD?
Anyway that’s about all I have on DOUBT. I will let Adams, Hoffman, Streep, Viola Davis and Shanley tell you more on Charlie Rose…

How about this for a topic on DOUBT: Why are they waiting to release this movie in most theaters until the day before the fucking Oscar telecast?!?!? It is supposedly one of the best movies of 2008, and I’m dyin to see it … yet we aren’t allowed to (unless you’re one of the elite in Los Angeles) until the first quarter of 2009.
RIDICULOUS. Oscar contenders need to be fully released in the year they contend. Otherwise, the Academy cuts its own throat at the Oscars by nominating films the general public hasn’t been able to see. This limits the audience interest in he awards show.
