A good two days earlier than it usually arrives at my front door, this morning I got hold of the new Empire Magazine which has a rather lazy WOLVERINE cover (I’ve recently enjoyed the WATCHMEN and STAR TREK ones) but that’s ok because it does have a cool exclusive on Michael Mann’s 30’s gangster epic PUBLIC ENEMIES.
I couldn’t find the photo’s online yet so I’ve used my handy iMac webcam thingy to take the stills. They aren’t great but they are the best we have right now.
Here’s Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, the first “rock star” gangster who was to some the most dangerous criminal in America but to others he was the Robin Hood of a depression era Chicago.
Out to get him is ambitious F.B.I cop Melvin Purvis. Mirroring Al Pacino in HEAT, it’s Christian Bale’s job to track down Dillinger and his notorious gang by any means necessary and the film is the cat and mouse game between these two historic figures.
This year’s Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard plays Dillinger’s love interest Billie Frechette.
Director Michael Mann talks of the similarities to HEAT with the mag…
“McCauley [De Niro's character in Heat] was on a completely different trajectory. He thought about the future. These guy were fatalistic: history was something that happened to you; there’s a bullet with your name on it”.
There’s lots more images and talk from PUBLIC ENEMIES (I’ve read the script and it’s pretty damn ace… but it’s Bale/Depp/Mann, what more do you need to know?) in this month’s Empire mag on sale this week…
PUBLIC ENEMIES is out on July 1st (U.S.) and July 3rd (U.K.) of next year.
categories - Marion Cotillard, Michael-Mann, Wolverine, christian bale, johnny depp, public enemies

Just … WOW. Depp and Bale. YUM. I won’t know where to look on the screen …
Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard both suck because they wouldn’t even come out to greet people! They would cover up their faces when they would get in their cars! Johnny was the only one who was kind enough to come out and greet everyone. The movie would be so much better without those freaks in it! Plus, they’re both crappy actors!
yeah..they are crappy actors..
Well, I guess putting in 14-hour days and then being willing to face the slobbering, squeeling, ass-grabbing public night after night does make Johnny a candidate for sainthood. Or maybe he just doesn’t like morons talking shit behind his back for not coming out to sign autographs.
My husband is in the movie Public Enemies. He filmed three scenes as an extra and worked several days as a stand-in (for some major characters). From everything he has told me and from my own experience, I would have to say that Johnny Depp is a very nice, down to earth guy. Some friends and I went to Illinois during filming and I met Johnny in person. He took the time to shake everyone’s hand–even though he had worked all day and it was 10:30 p.m. Plus, Johnny always looks right into your eyes and speaks with you. He always thanked us for coming. You really can’t fake that kind of genuine hospitality. I have several friends that live in cities where he filmed and he met the fans every night. Even after all-night shoots he met the fans at 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning. The other actor that always took time for the fans was John Michael Bolger. I didn’t get to meet him, but several of my friends did. Look him up–he is in a lot of television shows.
well amanda i don’t know what happened with you but marion was the only person that was rude. johnny and christian couldn’t have been any nicer when we met them. they were both so kind and genuine (john michael bolder too… he was cool)
Johnny Depp is the nicest celebrity ever. It’s even official…look it up. I just hope that I can get the chance to meet him one day. He just seems so down-to-earth and humble. He doesn’t let the fame cloud over who he really is. He said so himself, the fans are his boss. Without us, he’s nothing. A man like that is hard not to love.
Marion sucks at acting? Yeah, she sucks so much she won the Oscar, BAFTA, Cesar and Golden Globe for Best Actress this year. The one time I met Cotillard she was nothing but pleasent and nice…some actors have off days, their not always required to speak to fans or the public.
