Tonight, two of my heroes on stage together, before my very own eyes. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, Professor X and Magneto.
I bought the tickets not knowing or even caring what the play Waiting for Godot was about. What does it matter really?
The production is the first time the two much compared great friends have worked on stage together since 1977. They of course starred together in X-Men, but seeing them both perform on stage, live, well I just can’t wait.
I’m a huge Star Trek fan, the person I’m seeing it with is a huge Lord of the Rings fan. And we both like X-Men, so this couldn’t have been more perfect.

You should know that Waiting for Godot has often been praised as the most boring of all of Samuel Beckett’s pieces. Of course with legendary actors like these I’m sure it will be a masterpiece, but it is INCREDIBLY easy to go wrong. It is a show about two men who are waiting at a bus stop for a guy named Godot, and literally nothing happens. Brilliant idea that gets old after the first two hours. Have fun!
Back when I was at university a few years ago, I saw Patrick Stewart filming an ITV sci-fi show in the John Dalton Building on campus…he actually looks really suave in real life…I was walking down the street and looked up and was like ‘wow, that’s Patrick Stewart’. Ian McKellen is a wonderful actor too.
Wating for Godot is a genius masterpiece. We had to read it in school. And I never regret it.
Yeah Godot is good- but its basically just an exercise in self-conscious postmodernism- and its a tree not a busstop in the original.
We’re all born mad. Some remain so.
Have a good ‘un, Matt
Hey Matt, your in my town tonight bud! we should hook up and geek!
Hope you enjoy the show, i’m going over the road to the cafe tomorrow where actors playing at the theatre hang out during the day and see if i can hook up with Gandalf and Picard, Sweet!
Some people I know who went to see the play said it was pretentious nonsense. And to make matters worse, you could actually see Stewart mouthing other actors’ lines so he knew when to come in. As far as acting goes he’s not even in McKellen’s league.
Stewart’s stage work has always been A1 as far as I was concerned. He’s revered for it- but if he was mouthing other actors’ lines then shame on him (I find it a little hard to believe but I wasnt there).
