We are going well back in time with this week’s great movie scene. All the way back to 1920 in fact. The film in question is Robert Weine’s classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari which is probably one of the oldest films that continues to live on with great acclaim to this day.
This scene is the terrifying sequence where Cesare, having been instructed to kill an innocent women under the hypnotic spell of the evil Caligari, is creeping up on her in the middle of a night armed with a knife. Does he go through with killing her? Watch and find out!
The reason I posted this today was because Bob Kane’s (the creator of Batman) inspiration for the character of The Joker came from German actor Conrad Veidt’s performance in the silent movie The Man Who Laughs. Today of course is the day we get our first clear look at The Joker in the The Dark Knight which you can see by clicking here.
Veidt, is the actor who plays the lanky Cesare in this movie and is again influencing people… as his character in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari would heavily inspire one of Tim Burton’s most famous works.
