Shyamalan’s making an Avatar movie

nick_avatar_170.jpgWhat the hell happened to M. Night Shyamalan? After three extremely impressive debut movies with The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs, it seemed to me that he began to listen to his fanbase and critics way too much and started to believe in his own hype.

The Village was an awful film that Shyamalan got so very, very wrong. I have yet to see Lady in the Water but the fact that it appeared as “the worst film of the year” on so many critics lists, I very much doubt it will convince me that he has turned the corner from his “Village” fiasco.

Variety found through AICN, are reporting that the director is planning to make a film trilogy based on the popular Nickelodeon T.V. series Avatar. As usual for the egotistical director, he will be writing, producing and directing all three films.

However this will mark the first time he has made something that isn’t from his own source material. I would love to say that this sounds like a step in the right direction for the guy, but I really don’t like the sound of this….

Nick TV’s “Avatar,” which is set in an Asian-influenced fantasy world permeated by martial arts and magic, follows the adventures of the successor to a long line of Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.

The show is animated show for kids, but apparently the movie will be shot in live-action.

I’ve said for some time now that to get him back on track he needs to work with someone elses material so at least it’s a step in the right direction on that front. However, the fact that he is writing the film, means that we will once again be forced to witness his usual movie conventions, and blatantly obvious attempt to respond to every criticism ever leveled at him.

Did anyone here see Lady in the Water? Is it actually as bad as it’s been made out?

Yes, it is as bad as it sounds. Lady in the Water deserves to be called worst of the year, and it will surely win some Razzies come Oscar time.

This is a very good cartoon series, I really hope he doesn’t fuck it up.

I agree, the Avatar is a great show and it scares me a bit to see what he’ll do with it. Lady in the Water…I tried, I really tried to give him a good review but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I think Unbreakable is one of the most underrated movies in a long time but this last one got all it deserved. To update, the happening…a whole lot of nothing.
