I intially brushed off the talk of The Departed receiving a sequel, but every week there seems to be more and more gossip about this thing.
Now the trades are getting in on the act.
The Hollywood Reporter claim that talks are under way for a sequel to the 5 time Oscar nominated picture, with screenwriter William Monoghue currently piecing together a plot that revolves around the return of Mark Wahlberg’s character and the introduction of Robert De Niro in a new role.
De Niro of course was set to play the villain Frank Costello, but scheduling conflicts meant he had to pull out and the role eventually went to Jack Nicholson.
Apparently a prequel is not being ruled out either and this of course would allow many of the original cast members to return as… SPOILERS….. many people die in the original!
The studio have the rights to shoot remakes of the two Infernal Affairs sequels (one was a prequel), with the 2002 original being the basis for Martin Scorsese’s adaptation. Whether or not Scorsese would want to shoot a sequel to his own picture is not yet known. It certainly something that he has never done before, but did come the closest with Casino being an unofficial sequel to Goodfellas.
So it’s little more than talk at this stage, but it doesn’t seem to want to go away.
Would I love to see a sequel to The Departed? HELL FUCKING YES… if Scorsese returns! A prequel I would be less interested in as I know the fate of all the characters from the original but a sequel I would just love to see, especially if Scorsese casts his former muse Robert De Niro in one of the leading roles!
Would you want to see further installments to this franchise?
