Ok, so I’ve signed up to a month of Blockbuster online rentals on the three disc package and I’m looking for your help. I’m having a hard time choosing what it is I want to watch.
So for any of you out there, leave a comment with a couple of movies that maybe wouldn’t come to mind straight away but are must see’s. Is their a new release you think I should see that I might not have… is there an old gem that never gets mentioned but I really should see…is there a foreign movie (especially Asian movies) that you are just buzzing about right now.
Pretty much anything and everything, and I will put it on my list and probably drop a paragraph review once I have seen it.
The following is my current Top 20 movies on my rental queue, those in brackets I have seen before. THIS LIST WILL BE CONSTANTLY UPDATED WITH YOUR CHOICES
1. Borat
2. The Host
3. Swamp Thing * Ray’s recommendation
4. Perfume – The Story of a Murderer
5. The Stand Mini-Series
6. Running Scared * Essa’s recommendation
7. Peter Pan (seen before but a very long time ago)
8. THX – 1138 * Ray’s recommendation
9. Gattaca – *Essa’s recommendation
10. Carnival of Souls * Ray’s recommendation
11. The Proposition
12. The War of the Roses * Ray’s recommendation
13. Dragonslayer * Ray’s recommendation
14. Buffalo Soldiers * Essa’s recommendation
15. Crank
16. The Dirty Dozen (have a fancy for it for some reason)
17. Dark City
18. Falling Down * Ray’s recommendation
19. A Tale of Two Sisters * Essa’s recommendation
20. Robocop (seen it before but it’s great) * bantor 2’s recommendation
My first 3 dvd’s should be dispatched on Monday and if Blockbuster are as bad as they use to be then I probably won’t get my top 3 choices, so keep your suggestions coming guys if you haven’t suggested any movies already.
I’m going to add a DVD Blog feature at some point so this can stay running throughout the month. Stay tuned for that.

Not sure what you’ve seen … how about…
Touch of Evil?
Swamp Thing (with Adrienne Barbeau’s enormous … talent)
Nosferatu
Carnival of Souls
The Four Seasons
Hmmm… keep going?
Hi Ray…
Touch of Evil is great, IMO one of the top 2-3 movies ever made.
Nosferatu is cool, but it isn’t my favourite Dracula movie.
The other three I haven’t seen.
Swamp Thing! Perfect choice, that’s the type of forgotten movie I wanted someone to remind me of. I’ve never seen it for some reason, even though I’m a fan of a lot of Wes Craven and Adrienne Barbeau is such a geek favourite. I think I haven’t seen it because I’ve heard it ain’t that great… but I’ve added it right near the top!
Alan Alda was a director? I never knew that but Blockbuster don’t seem to have it.
Carnival of Souls sounds right up my alley… added.
Thanks Ray that was great. When I get a few of these watched you should come back for more!
Will do, Matty. Of course I am never that far away…well, except for that damned ocean. Glad you’re back and that you managed to take a trip to America without being shot, stabbed, robbed, drugged, raped, strip-searched, or laughed at.
The Four Seasons is a totally overlooked classic. Literally the film has disappeared completely. What a shame, too … there are at least four brilliant performances in it. Maybe I’ll do a little number about the film on the site.
You will LOVE Swamp Thing, I promise.
Have you ever seen THX-1138? I know many Star Wars and science fiction fans who had not seen it…until I made them. One of the greatest examples of sound editing, in my opinion.
How about Dragonslayer? Best movie dragon, bar none.
WAr of the Roses?
Falling Down?
Batteries Not Included?
Hmmm…I could do this all day :)
Not sure what kind of films your into, or what you’ve seen but here’s a few that I like
Running Scared (2006) – Probably the only Paul Walker film you should ever see, avoid all others. It will blow your expectations away.
Buffalo Soldiers (2001) – I ddn’t know war and comedy could go so well together.
Perfect Blue (1998) – In my eyes this is the greatest anime movie ever made. A brilliantly animated pychological thriller, it’s no wonder Aronofsky’s purchased the rights to it.
Thursday (1998) – Starring Aaron Eckhart, this film is pretty hard to get a hold off. Although it got a lot of stick for being a Pulp Fiction knock-off at the time, it’s still a very enjoyoable movie..in..a..Pulp Fiction..kind of way :s.
Gattaca (1997) – Totally under-rated. One of the finest Science-Fiction dramas ever made.
En Grym Film, aka Thriller, aka They Call Her One Eye (1974) – I’m pretty sure this Swedish cult classic inspired Kill Bill. I’ve never seen a revenge flick quite like it.
You mentioned Asian Cinema..ermm the only ones I can think of right now are
Ichi The Killer
Audition
Chunking Express
A Tale of Two Sisters (I was scared for like a week after watching this.)
Battle Royale
Hard Boiled
Zatoichi (I’ve never seen this, but everyone tells me its good.)
Essa – Gattaca is a GREAT choice. How this film failed to find an audience is beyond me…oh, wait – it has a brain.
Dead Man’s Shoes is an absolute must see. Great premise, great acting and some great violent scenes. You might of seen it but if you haven’t you have to get it out.
Hey Matt, you should definatly check out Leon: The Professional, and also don’t forget Robocop the single greatest movie ever.
Definately Ray, this film was like the equivalent to ‘Children Of Men’ for the 90’s.
It touched on some major issues which can very easily be a reality in the near future. Accompanied with brilliant cinematography and an outstanding score, it confuses me why hardly nobody went to go see it.
I guess people prefer to watch movies like ‘Norbit’ instead.
THX-1138 – nope I haven’t seen it somehow. added.
Dragonslayer – looks so cool.. added.
The War of the Roses – I’ve always been told to stay away from the movie but I will give it a go… added.
Falling Down – Someone had to suggest a Joel Schmacher film didn’t they? It’s like suggesting to someone who’s allergic of the water, to go to Sea World or Wet and Wild…. I’ve added it though but I no I will regret it!!
Batteries not Included… one of my girlfriends favourites, can’t say I thought much of it.
Running Scared… only ever heard good things about this flick… added.
Buffalo Soldiers… sounds good… added.
Thursday… looks great but Blockbuster don’t have it. I’m going to make a point of getting a copy of it at some point though.
Gattaca…. can you believe I haven’t seen this… added.
They Call Her One Eye…. any movie that inspired KILL BILL i have to see, but Blockbuster don’t have it. Gonna hunt down a copy.
Battle Royale, Hard Boiled, Zatochi, Ichi the Killer, Chunging Express and Audition I have all seen. Liked all of them except Audition was a tough watch.
A Tale of Two Sisters… heard loads of great things about it. added.
Dead Man’s Shoes I HATE WITH A REVENGE. I Know I must be the only one on the planet who doesn’t like that movie but I can’t stand it. Keep you recommendations coming though, because I know I’m in the minority on that one.
Leon and Robocop are such fun movies. I’m going to add Robocop to my list anyway though.
dude, harsh times is a great film. christian bale is a superb actor. he is the next hollywood great.well him and matt damon
Richard III with Ian Mckellen
