EXCLUSIVE: Want to Know About Magneto?

magnetoYesterday we had word on possible titles for Fox’s X-Men spinoffs; today we’ve got exclusive details on the plot for David Goyer’s Magneto movie. The director spoke about plans to shoot in Argentina and Europe, and that his story will deal with the origins of Magneto and Professor X – but we’re able to give you a little more info, read on at your own peril:

The movie is book-ended with two scenes in Poland at the 60th Anniversary of the Auschwitz Liberation. These events take place within the timeframe of the first three X-films and will reunite Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

The opening takes a cue from Bryan Singer’s X-Men, where a young Erik Lehnsherr crumples the Auschwitz gates. Erik is subjected to horrendous experiments by a team of scientists led by vicious Nazi Dr. Kleinmein.

We next meet Lehnsherr in Ukraine. It’s ten years later and he’s married to Magda, they have a young girl called Anya. Erik works in construction, his abilities are well developed, he’s able to plunge a nail straight through wood by just staring at it.

In the village pub Erik spots Kirken, an abusive prison guard from the concentration camp. Kirken ends up dead by Erik’s hand and the villagers burn down his house – Magda and Anya are killed in the blaze.

In Paris, Erik seeks help from famed Nazi hunter Professor Wesenthein – he wants revenge, more specifically he’s looking for Kleinmein. Wesenthein tells Erik many Nazi’s are hiding out on South America, and that Kleinmein was trying to genetically manufacture a master race for Hitler.

Erik moves on to Argentina to try and track down Nazi war criminals – he’s met by CIA agent Owen Graves and the pair fore an alliance. Graves tips off Erik on the whereabouts of known Nazis but also harbours his own agenda.

The action switches to Israel where Erik searches for a man well known for helping Holocaust survivors. He finds him playing soccer: Dr Charles Xavier…

Goyer’s take combines elements of his own Batman Begins, The Boys From Brazil and the existing X-Men film franchise. The scale is somewhat similar to the first X-Men movie, but multiple locations and a period setting could knock the budget up significantly.

Fans of the previous X-Men films will be pleased to know there are some other familiar faces in Magneto. Expect to see Senator Kelly return (a young and old version), along with mutants Victor Creed and Mystique.

There’s plenty more details which OWF may reveal later (even though this is a spoiler post, we don’t want to ruin the whole movie by going over every plot point).

One of the biggest hurdles this movie faces is casting the lead. An unknown won’t be able to sell this film to the casual moviegoer, so who could Fox and Goyer get to play the young Magneto?

  1. Fantastic post! This sounds like what I would hope the structure of a Wolverine prequel movie would be.

  2. Nice details. I just hope this thing doesn’t turn into “Hey, look! That’s so-and-so from the the earlier movies - just YOUNGER!!” like the Star Wars prequels did.

  3. I am a huge X-Men fan and I loved all 3 X-Men movies, As a matter of fact, I’m really looking froward to watching X3 in HD on HBO in about 45 minutes. All that being said, while the Wolverine movie can’t arrive fast enough, I have no interest in a Magneto movie. I don’t care about how he met Professor X, designed Cerebro, avenged his second cousin’s botched cirumcision, etc. Am I alone?
Congrats to the site for a huge scoop. I enjoy script reviews. I know they rub a lot of insiders the wrong way but it’s great to get the early buzz.

  4. I’m just wondering how far they’re going with the script for the movie. Are they going to introduce Magneto’s children, Wanda and Pietro (aka Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver)?

  8. interesting details, and if handled intelligently, it could be a great action-suspense-sci-fi movie, especially with the globe-trotting aspect; my only concern is any political backlash when the subtext is examined of Magneto, who is of Jewish background, apparently going “overboard” in his quest for revenge, and becoming something of a “terrorist” for mutant supremacy..

  9. X-Men 3 sucked - we all know it. Unfortunately Brett Ratner murdered the franchise.

The hard thing now for fans is not to become so blind to the attrocity, just because they loved the characters so much.

Magneto could be well done - PROVIDED it doesn’t turn out like another “Hannibal Rising” - what they DO need to do is get the franchise back from the abyss - introduce APOCALYPSE (give him a Nazi Connection/Weapon X Connection), SOMEHOW bring back Cyke and Jeanie, and KILL Brett Ratner (dude, just stay making films like “Rush Hour 3″ - you are the George Lucas/Ang Lee/Joel Schumacher of X Films).

  10. whoa hey, x3 is actually my favourite of the 3 x films.
bryan singer was nowhere as good. gimme a break. superman returns even stinked although i had hoped it would be good atleast. x3 was epic and grandeur.
i did watched it over n over again. x1 made me sleep halfway, so did x2 (although far better than x1).
nehow im just stoked theyre doing another x-men related movie

  11. Well, suffice to say the fan of the character are not pleased by these major changes in the foundation of Magneto’s character. Goyer is basically pulling an “Anikin Skywaler”, making Magneto a villain, partially responsible for the horrible things that happened to him, before he even becomes a villain. The audience will have no sympathy and his fall will be neither dramatic or interesting. All Goyer is making here is a one dimensional monster, not the three dimensional, morally ambiguous anti-hero he has become in the 616 universe.

As long as Goyer’s name is attached to the project I can say that a lot of the fans of the character are not even going to go near this film (I won’t even rent it). We’ll just be satisfied with his character as he is portrayed in the comics and try to ignore this films existence.
