$87 million ($158 million worldwide) opening weekend for Hugh Jackman and Wolverine. Just goes to show how little movie piracy really effects movies in 2009 (I wouldn't have expected this movie to make $100 million plus regardless) and we maybe all exaggerated over the workprint leak last month. Still, it did cost Marvel millions of dollars, so it was still significant, just not quite as significant as we thought it could have been.

Jackman still has awesome star power in this role (but for none others it seems) and there's still lots of money to be made from this X-Men series.

Variety say Jackman is wanting to quickly get back aboard the Wolverine saddle. The 40 year old Aussie actor has been talking to 20th Century Fox about getting back into the Wolverine game quickly and of course the next journey in the character's saga is to take him to Japan, where comic legend has it he was trained as a Samurai. Apparentaly this was teased at the end of X-Men Orgins: Wolverine but who the hell stayed till the end of the credits of that movie anyways?

I was barely able to stay till the end of the movie, let alone the million ...

20th Century Fox President Tom Rothman has probably endured the most stressful week of his career after a movie he has spent years and "hundreds of millions of dollars" on making was horribly subject of a workprint leak that it seems was finished enough for people to make a final judgement on, but not nearly finished enough to say it was completed.

Now I know Rothman is hardly our favourite studio chief the way he has handled tentpole after tentpole release for way too long now but no-one deserves what happened to him this week. And it's more than understandable that he is pissed that what he calls a "complete misrepresentation of the film" in an interview with EW, "that is deeply unfair to the people who have worked on it for years", may be the death of the Wolverine franchise at this point.

He said...
"Just like I'm sure there are lots of banks that get robbed that thought their vault was safe. We thought the post-production pipeline was secure at every juncture. But, obviously, it's self-evident that it wasn't. I have a high level of confidence we'll find out where the lapse in security was and we'll bring the perpetrators to justice."
Rothman said that ...

In what appears NOT to be an April Fool's day prank (remember... last night I said I wasn't going to run them), a high quality workprint of 20th Century Fox's May 1st summer blockbuster, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, has leaked online.

The full length, DVD like quality, print is “near-finished… marred only by a few unfinished FX shots.” In addition, “there’s no timecode, no watermark…nothing. It’s a clean, perfect copy.” - according to Drew McWeeny at Hitfix.

A further update by the guys at Spill.com claim the workprint is the one 20th Century Fox screened and deemed not good enough to be released, pumping more money into the production so Gavin Hood could re-shoot scenes and improve the final product.

The workrpint is available to anyone savvy enough to know how to download from bit torrent and rapidshare type sites, which basically equals the majority of the 18-35 year old male target audience for these Marvel productions. It's not hard to imagine a big portion of it's core audience will see the film a good month before it is set to be released. That's a long time... and rotten word of mouth can spread very quickly, especially for a production the size of this ...

Hugh Jackman e-mailed AICN this weekend with the official word on the extensive Vancouver re-shoots we heard rumblings about last week. Remember, this is the official response...
Hey everyone -

It's Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie - I owe it all to you guys!

I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we've got much more in store!
AICN were also sent an exclusive new image...

WOLVERINE AND FRIENDS open May 1st.

Late extensive re-shoots couldn't save Columbia's HANCOCK from being a painful experience on our eyeballs, now 20th Century Fox, unhappy with the work so far of director Gavin Hood and with more cash coming their way thanks to WATCHMEN... have ordered some last minute filming to try and save the picture.

These aren't just some late tweaks to the picture, they are described as "extensive re-shoots" according to Collider. They are taking place in Vancouver and from all the reports we've been hearing, if they could remake the whole picture, they won't hesitate. For whatever reason, they haven't been happy with Hood's work and are constantly pushing their weight to make the movie the studio want.

Though Hood can't have done that bad a job, if he is the one doing the re-shoots. Maybe more money has allowed them to film something that was previously out of budget?

Isn't it funny how the spin-off movie about ONE X-MEN character ends up having about 100 mutant cameo's?

Enjoy the rather desperate X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE trailer below in HD. I say desperate because after a good start showing Logan's past, it just grows and grows and grows into a farcical looking cheesy B-Movie with mutants thrown in haphazardly in an effort to say "look we have this guy in this movie too, and OH, wait till you see this guy".

Still Danny Huston is a great choice for a younger villainous Brian Cox (as Stryker) but Liev Schreiber's role as Sabertooth is so beneath him. And how much acting will Hugh Jackman be needed for here, or is this just a movie to show off his ripped body and adrenalin face?

One of the most memorable moments I have in my head from the leaked X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE footage from Comic-Con this year was when the crowd went fucking crazy for the first appearance of Gambit in this movie Universe.

He is a character that many X-MEN fans, including myself, have for a long time hoped would appear in the series. The new issue of Empire Magazine this week gave us our first official look at Taylor Kitsch as Gambit...

The new trailer for X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE will be attached to prints of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL opening Dec. 12th.

Don't judge Gambit's look from this image alone. Once he gets his trench coat on, he will look just like we envisioned. I hope! Thanks to Coming Soon for the image.

Also, has anyone noticed that on IMDB, an actor by the name of Tom Pocock is listed as Scott Summer (aka Cyclops). What does that mean? Remember this is a prequel set many years before the events of the first X-MEN movie, are we going to see young Cyclops in this film?

Discuss: What do you make of Gambit's look from this image? Are you worried there are too many new characters in ...

A good two days earlier than it usually arrives at my front door, this morning I got hold of the new Empire Magazine which has a rather lazy WOLVERINE cover (I've recently enjoyed the WATCHMEN and STAR TREK ones) but that's ok because it does have a cool exclusive on Michael Mann's 30's gangster epic PUBLIC ENEMIES.

I couldn't find the photo's online yet so I've used my handy iMac webcam thingy to take the stills. They aren't great but they are the best we have right now.

Here's Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, the first "rock star" gangster who was to some the most dangerous criminal in America but to others he was the Robin Hood of a depression era Chicago.

Out to get him is ambitious F.B.I cop Melvin Purvis. Mirroring Al Pacino in HEAT, it's Christian Bale's job to track down Dillinger and his notorious gang by any means necessary and the film is the cat and mouse game between these two historic figures.

This year's Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard plays Dillinger's love interest Billie Frechette.

Director Michael Mann talks of the similarities to HEAT with the mag...
"McCauley [De Niro's character in Heat] was on a completely different trajectory. He thought ...

Coming Soon have confirmed with the studio that the new trailer for X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE will play only in the theatres specifically with prints of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL on Dec. 12th and won't be shown online or on t.v. until a later date.

In other words, they are trying to reach out that little further to entice the comic book geeks that this new Keanu Reeves blockbuster might actually be worth seeing. Clearly they are starting to get anxious over the appeal of such a bleak looking movie.

In regards to X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, means we will be subjected to recorded bootlegged trailers like this which leaked online showing a presentation from the Comic Con Panel of the movie this summer...

Matt here…

Rumors of trouble regarding the production of X-Men Origins: Wolverine have some legit foundation if Variety are to be believed.

They sensationally claim that Richard Donner, the man who directed the first ever Summer blockbuster superhero movie with Superman in 1978 had to fly to the other side of the world to Australia to the defence of director Gavin Hood who 20th Century Fox "almost fired" from their May 2009 tentpole release.

Dickie Donner, who is the husband of producer Lauren Shuler Donner... looks to have kept Hood in a job after Fox had two backup directors ready to take over. Ironically, this is the terrible fate that happened to Donner himself which ended up being the tragic situation on Superman II where he left the project before it's completion.

The conflict regarding Wolverine is said to be over the tone of the film, Hood's take on the character being much like Frank Miller's dark and viscious version. Instead Fox, wanting to appease a wider audience initially demaned a kiddie friendly cut.

The end result we won't know till May but either the studio or Hood must have backed down in their demands.

Of course this isn't the first time we have heard of ...

Thank you Fox. And thanks to OWF reader Lencho for the link!

Now Fox, you need to go that one step further and get this bad boy in HD for the rest of the world to see how good a job you have done with the first trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Skipping the usual "teaser" step they went full whack into a full length trailer and although it's in crappy shaky guerrilla styled shot youtube format... it still kicks ass.

There is just so much to take in, what a vast amount of footage (J.J. Abrams you hearing me!) we have just seen for a movie that comes out in May.
I love the focus on drama over action but when the action comes, it looks exciting and as violent a movie as you could want from a Wolverine picture that's not rated R. Danny Huston will rule as Stryker and is just about the only actor I could think of who is convincing as a younger version of Brian Cox.
Deadpool with no mask, I can't understand that unless you are trying to seduce the female audience with a good look at Ryan Reynolds. He looks like he walked into the wrong movie ...
