Opening worldwide today is Roland Emmerich's latest disaster porn movie 2012 and the word is, it's his most loony, over-the-top, self-indulgent and hollow piece of film-making yet but which Jeff Wells claims is " certifiably insane and must be seen because of this fearless wackazoid quality".

Every single critic that has seen it claim it to be the most ridiculous movie they've ever seen, with the kind of special effects for the sake of special effects that will blow your mind.

Roger Ebert, with the kind of review that Columbia Pictures will be gushing over this weekend, calls 2012 "the mother of all disaster movies (and the father, and the extended family)" and that Emmerich "unleashes two hours of cataclysmic special events hammering the Earth relentlessly... ends the world, stomps on it, grinds it up and spits it out".

2012 looks to be on course to be the biggest crowd pleaser of 2010 and may just well be on course for a $50 million plus opening.

One day soon, we will see a disaster film from Emmerich
which doesn't even bother to include human
characters at all.

For anyone with a penchant for actual characters in their movie soup, I have a feeling this is going to ...

The Oldboy remake is done.

Latino Review report from "a trusted source" that Mandate (Korean studio behind the original film) and Dreamworks were unable to see eye-to-eye during negotiations over the manga's rights and it left Dreamworks into walking out on the project, along with Steven Spielberg and his star/producer Will Smith.
Oldboy survives for now but Hollywood continue
with remakes of Let the Right One In and
The Orphanage, among others.
And without Dreamworks, there is no Hollywood remake.

Mark Protosevich had been writing the screenplay under Dreamwork's money I believe (and who knows if he actually penned anything because if he had, it could only be on the presumption they were to secure the rights), so it's not even like another studio could come in and take his screenplay and hatch a pitch to Mandate (unless of course Dreamworks sold them the script).

So at the moment it looks like there's not gonna be an Oldboy remake, at least not for many a year. Sanity restored. Birds can restore their morning song. The world is right again.

God knows who's interested in sitting through a Men in Black 3 but Sony keep throwing money at the project so they obviously think someone must be.

The Hollywood Reporter say that Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) has been hired to scribe the next outing of Agents Jay and Kay and that series director Barry Sonnefeld is attached (but hasn't signed anything) for the project that was officially announced as a "Go" on 02.04.09.

Cohen is a good hiring and his background writing with Mike Judge (he contributed to Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill and Idiocracy) has left him with a smart creative comedic brain, and he could come up with a killer screenplay right here. He's hungry and has been waiting to be let out on a leash like this for some time.
Men in Black series has grossed $1 billion for Sony,
so a third movie is seen as easy money... but only if
they can secure Will Smith to return.
His job of course is the pressure one for the whole project as he has to come up with a smart enough story to entice Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones to come back for a third outing, or his work ...

Will Smith has taken a year off to spend some time with the family, to help his son realise his dream of playing The Karate Kid on the big screen, to regroup and re-valuate his career whilst every big movie he has previously starred in is being offered to him for a reprisal. A big paycheck gig.

Just this week we've heard of Columbia hiring a guy to write Bad Boys 3 with the hope it will entice Smith to come back to that franchise, and it's become a regular thing with Smith's past tentpoles recently. The more time Smith takes off without filling his future schedule, the more studios are desperate to find that pitch that will entice him to commit.

Every studio wants Smith, because he's mega bucks. I'm gonna link to all the articles for proof (see after the jump) but Hollywood are currently writing the following, all without a firm commitment from Smith. Which do you wanna see him make?

The Hollywood Reporter ran an article Sunday night (I know, I know... we are a little late) with the news that a Bad Boys 3 had officially become a priority at Columbia.

Hot newcomer Peter Craig (he has wrote the script for the latest Ben Affleck film, and Cowboy Bebop at Warners for Keanu Reeves) has been hired to write a third movie in the over-the-top, often racist, loud, and IMO totally ridiculous, almost parody-like franchise that the studio hope will entice the old gang to return for one more outing.

And return for a little less money than what they could probably make elsewhere, cos at the end of the day Bad Boys II made only $273 million worldwide. Yes, usually that is a wonderful haul but on a budget of $130 million which would probably be well over $170 million now with inflated salaries and Bay's inflated explosion costs post-Transformers 2, so it's far from a guaranteed big money earner at Columbia. And if they lose Smith, Lawrence or Bay... they don't really have a franchise, so it's gotta be a mix of a spectacular script and a desire from the three to come back for a little less, if ...

It grossed $624 million worldwide, so a sequel to Hancock was always envitable - it was just a case of offering Will Smith money he couldn't refuse.

The Hollywood Reporter say Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara (two writers on The Shield) have been hired to work closely with Smith, director Peter Berg and the original producing team to come up with a story idea for a sequel which more than likely will delve further into the 3,000 year old relationship between the two Gods played by Will Smith and Charlize Theron, who tragically are never able to be with one another but keep being drawn by this force and pull to keep ending up back together.

It's also a safe bet to predict that another God will probably be the main villain.

I absolutely hated the first movie which completely butchered what SHOULD have been a dark and compelling look at a superhero could save the world but couldn't make the woman of his dreams fall in love with him, and how this inability to get what he wants sends him into a deep depression involving alcoholism, attempted suicide and even rape. Now that's the movie I wanted to see!

Will Universal really give screenwriters Paul Wenick and Rhett Reese, the guys who wrote the low-on-the radar Zombieland, the $200 million they require to make the admittedly eye catchingly titled Earth vs. Moon into a summer blockbuster reality?

Big question mark I'd say, even with a title as provocative and fun (can you imagine the amazing poster campaign?) because unless you are Christopher Nolan or James Cameron... $200 million is extremely hard to come by if you haven't got a movie based on an popular and proven geek fanbase as a basis. It just doesn't happen. Well that is unless it can be a starring vehicle for Will Smith.

AH! That's a BINGO, as my favourite line in Inglourious Basterds goes!

Reese and Wenick have named the lead character in Earth vs. Moon after Smith, hoping to attract his attention, likely the only star who can make this movie a reality. A movie they describe to First Showing as...
"hardcore, 300-style movie with some comic relief to it, but about the Earth and a colony on the moon essentially in a civil war."
The movie will be set 300 or 400 years in the future and will only work if Universal can coff up $200 million, because the ambition ...

Variety's Mike Fleming is reporting that Tom Hanks has turned down the chance to re-do Jimmy Stewart in Steven Spielberg's utterly useless remake of the 1950's comedy/drama Harvey announced Monday, declining to even read Jonathan Tropper script's for a remake because he is such a fan of Stewart and thought there was no topping the original. All it took was a brief conversation, Hanks never even gave it serious consideration.

Good on him I say and please don't change your mind on this one if you get offered the silly money you got for turning up on the set of Angels & Demons, because it certainly can't have been artistic integrity or a love for the character/situation that saw you reprise Robert Langdon.

For Harvey, attention will now turn to whether Will Smith will do the same. He has no firm deals for anything to shoot next year and was said to be Spielberg's second choice to play Elwood P. Dowd, the man who has an invisible six foot rabbit as a friend. Spielberg and Smith have been plotting to make something together for about 18 months now with The Trial of the Chicago 7 and a remake of Oldboy previously muted.

Following the release of Seven Pounds a fortnight or so ago (see Ray's full review here), it seems an appropriate time to look into the career of the man who is generally held as the Golden Boy of Hollywood. I present to you the first in my new Actors in Profile segment: I'm not concerned about what they put their dicks in, or who they're wearing, this is purely about the careers of the mighty and the much-loved from a purely filmic side.

Will Smith

Debut Movie: Where The Day Takes You (1992)
	Highest Fee: £28m (I,Robot)

Clean as cut glass rapper turned sitcom star turned Hollywood megastar is hardly a familiar model for career progression in the most fickle of industries, but Will Smith has turned his adaptability and all-round showmanship into a fine art. Gone are ludicrous outfits and pronounced overacting of the Fresh Prince years, replaced with the familiar dependableness that goes hand in hand with the particular brand of affection associated with the Golden Boy tag.

Considering Smith's later career choices, his role in Where the Day Takes You could be torn from the pages of another actor entirely- the film is as dark as Smith has been associated with: the ...

Rory Bruer, the President of Sony Pictures Entertainment announced at the Sony ShoWest panel this week that third portions of the Men in Black and Ghostbusters franchises were officially in development, both set to be released in 2011.

Ghostbusters 3 of course we already knew about but it's still interesting he made the announcement because it's no longer a project quietly being written by the writers of The Office which might happen if all the pieces fall into the right place, it's now a publicly announced feature with an expected release year. We expect to hear lots more announcements around the time of the video game/blu-ray release on June 6th, Ghostbusters official 25th year anniversary.

At this point we know Bill Murray seems to have agreed upon a return, as has Harold Ramis and Dan Ackroyd. Ernie Hudson, you can't imagine wouldn't want to be in this feature and Sigourney Weaver was interested enough to have lunch with Bill Murray around Christmas time to discuss the possibility of a new movie.

With The Office connections, one wonders whether Steve Carrell, John Krasinski, or any of the other Office workers will move into Ghostbusting, and although it's been denied... we still believe Judd Apatow is on board ...

It's a hard story to stomach but when it's from Production Weekly, an industry source, we have to give at least some legitmacy to it.

According to the site... Will Smith, his wife Jada Pinkett Smith and their three kids Willow, Trey and Jaden will make-up the cast of THE ROBINSONS.

The movie would be a remake of THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSONS, a 1960 Walt Disney movie about a shipwrecked family building an island home.

If the film goes ahead it would be one of the more obvious meta-films in the history of cinema. Though the whole idea of such a personal film that they could play every Christmas in their own household, does remind me of the same kind of self-gloating that comes with a photographed family festive card staged in front of a big Christmas tree and open fire.

The film probably came about when Will Smith and family were watching the original at home and thought "wouldn't it be fun to remake that as a family, we could get together, film it, and wouldn't it be a great present for our Auntie".

The same thing happened with THE KARATE KID and the new remake at Columbia produced by Smith that will star his son ...

McG is a huge fan of Will Smith (who isn't?) and desperately wants to cast him for his newly announced adaptation if the Jules Verne classic, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, set up at Disney.

The TERMINATOR SALVATION director told Latino Review in person...
"Man I’m trying to get Will Smith to do it, been trying to get a hold of him. I've been wanting to work with him for a long time already. That guy's great”.
Does he want him as Ned Land (played famously by Kirk Douglas) or Captain Nemo (James Mason in the original, though in literature he is of Indian origin).

McG hints that he would want Smith to play the part with the kind of dark edge he had in I AM LEGEND and SEVEN POUNDS...
“The character Nemo in this film is more about obsession, he is obsessed and people tend to forget that when you become so obsessed you end up being the villain.”
Love Will Smith but a Disney vehicle like this one just doesn't seem right for him. A little too much WILD WILD WEST for me.

The most obvious, laziest and probably the worst casting of 2009 has already taken place.

Variety say Jackie Chan, whose name use to be mean something to Western audiences, will play Mr. Miyagi in the new KARATE KID remake being produced by Will Smith and starring his son Jaden Smith in the title role.

Just another paycheck for Chan.

The original role was made famous by the late Pat Morita, who won an Academy Award nomination for his portrayl of the martial arts mentor.

Harold Zwart (THE PINK PANTHER 2, ONE NIGHT AT MCCOOL'S) directs from rookie scribe Chris Murphy. The Columbia Pictures movie is set in the "exotic locale" of Beijing.

The whole movie feels like Will Smith pleasing his son Jaden by producing a remake of a movie they have probably sat down together and enjoyed watching as father/son. "Daddy, daddy... can I be the KARATE KID someday?".

When Will Smith is your dad, apparently yes.

Though to be fair to him the majority of the criticism of the adaptation of his book is more aimed at the writer and director of the film not really knowing what to do with the good concept and the movie therefore peetering out way to quickly. I'm also rather amused to see many of the reviewers compare it to LIAR LIAR, something I said from the first day Jim Carrey got attached to the project. And I'm also not surprised that the movie isn't going to do much to get Carrey out of the slump he is in right now.

Though we shouldn't forget this is his first No. 1 hit since 2004, though even ME MYSELF AND IRENE made $24 million on it's first weekend in 2000.

What's going on with the world's biggest movie star. Oh that's right, HANCOCK made $624.4 million worldwide, boy did we waste our money on that piece of garbage?

From JoBlo...
When we asked Will if he'd ever be up for playing another superhero he replied that there were a lot of unexplored characters in the HANCOCK universe that would be ripe for a sequel and confirmed that we'll definitely see the rumored HANCOCK 2 in a few years.

If I were you guys, I would saviour his upcoming SEVEN POUNDS. Grasp it with all your might because it might be the last interesting Will Smith movie in a while if all these proposed projects come off.

According to a source at AICN, Warner Bros. have decided to scrap the idea of an I AM LEGEND prequel because of it's story limitations (i.e. we know exactly where it is going) and will instead go in the direction of a sequel.

Which is fine but as you may remember, Will Smith's Robert Neville didn't exactly make it out alive of the first movie and without him, do you even have a franchise to spawn a sequel from?

It was Will Smith after enjoying immensely his time working on the first picture who came up with an initial prequel story that would win him another go as this character. But Warner Bros. are now balking at that and have told D.B. Weiss to focus on writing a sequel and a continuation of how the last movie ended.

A lot of creative meetings and discussions ahead for this one. Personally, if they are desperate to carry on this franchise then I can't help but feel the only direction they should take is a duel storyline... something that shows Will Smith's downfall as he realises he is becoming the last man alive as the deadly virus spreads which can run concurrently with a new ...

Film School Rejects got a rare chance this week to speak to Will Smith out promoting his new movie SEVEN POUNDS where of course the topic of discussion soon turned to the recently announced Hollywood remake of the Korean 2003 classic movie OLDBOY which we know now will be written by Mark Protosevich (I AM LEGEND) and directed by Steven Spielberg.

Smith says it's definitely happening and that it's not their intention to remake the Chan-wook Park movie but are instead looking to adapt the original Japanese manga graphic novels by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya novels for screen, just like Park did when he first stumbled across them.
We’re looking at that right now. Not the film though, it’s the original source material. There’s the original comics of ‘Oldboy’ that they made the first film from. And that’s what we’re working from, not an adaptation of the film…,” said Smith.

As I've never read the original source material, I have taken the top google entry for "oldboy manga review", a piece written by Floating Sakura at Manga Jouhou...
In comparing the manga with the movie, I see the two are actually quite different, although the general plot line is the same. To be ...

And so the Summer tentpole blockbuster plans for the OLDBOY remake continues. The Hollywood Reporter say Mark Protosevich (I AM LEGEND, POSEIDON) is in talks with Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks to come up with a screenplay for the redo of the 2003 Chan-wook Park Korean classic.

As we mentioned two weeks ago, Will Smith is attached to lead and produce with Spielberg directing. All signs pointed towards a July 4th, watered down blockbuster and hiring the man who wrote the words which helped Smith make $584 million for Warner Bros. last year with I AM LEGEND, is further sad evidence of this.

Dreamworks are still trying to hatch a deal with Mandate who own the rights to the original film, who quite understandably are wanting to get a good deal out of this because a Smith/Spielberg combination should be huge.

Now I was in favour of I AM LEGEND, I thought it was a pretty good adaptation. It was only about 40% of the power of the original novel but the heart of it was still there and if it was an original screenplay, I think more people would have dug it.

What it did show was that Protovosich can deliver a studio friendly ...

Originally reported as a "reliable rumor" back in September 2007 and now confirmed today by Variety, Will Smith's 10 year old son Jaden Smith will lead a new reboot of the KARATE KID franchise at Columbia Pictures.

A guy named Chris Murphy (there's lots of Chris Murphy's on IMDB... none of them writers) is scribing, with a view for the film to begin shooting next year in Beijing. The movie will "borrow" elements from the original ROCKY meets martial arts "underdog against the world" plot where a bullied youth stands up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor (memorably played by Pat Morita in the original franchise who also nabbed a Best Supporting Oscar nom).

Jerry Weintaub, the producer who greenlit the franchise back in 1984 is spearheading the project alongside Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment.

Ralph Macchio was in his early 20's when the original movie was made and last year I wondered whether Columbia would sit on the film until Jaden was in his late teen's but with shooting next year, they are going for a young KARATE KID.

And unless this kid has grown significantly since THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS, I don't hold much hope for him working here.

What can you say? We all know it ain't going to work. I hate to dismiss a big Hollywood project from this early a stage but I will eat a live octopus if this movie ends up being anything but a disaster.

Variety carry the news this morning that the biggest movie star on the planet, Will Smith, is to work with the legendary Steven Spielberg for the very first time on what is likely to be a July 4th Hollywood Blockbuster. Right on! That gets you excited huh? And you know, usually I would be too... hoping for maybe a new MINORITY REPORT with Will Smith (I, ROBOT, I AM LEGEND) in the lead.
Think again...

They are remaking the disturbing, the frightening, the absolute one movie that I can guarantee will leave you with the God damn shakes and that's Chan-wook Park's 2003 Korean thriller OLDBOY. Already the remake is doomed. There ain't no way in anyone's imagination that this material should be seen with a wide multiplex release on a July 4th weekend. Just no way.

And if you water it down to secure that kind of release, then what's the point? You are stripping away what makes the original ...
