Things have changed quite significantly with Scream 4 over the past couple of months.

The change of tactics came when Neve Campbell took a big U-Turn and decided her career could do with an exposure boost by agreeing to return, setting up a situation that is very reminiscent of the Ghostbusters 3 reunion, where the new film will act as a passing of the torch flick. The old gang from the movies past, and the new gang who will straddle up and push the franchise forward for the next five years.

No longer will it just be small supporting cameos from David Arquette and Courtney Cox-Arquette, this has now become a movie where Arquette, Cox and Campbell have a much larger part in a bigger ensemble.
Is the favourable money on all three of the
Scream trilogy's main characters croaking
in the new film?

Williamson explained to MTV...
"The fourth one is an ensemble. It'll take place right now, 10 years later, and it's going to take place in [Sidney Prescott's hometown of] Woodsboro. We'll have our three main characters, and we'll be introducing several more. We'll also be introducing a little group, a little ensemble of new castmembers. That'll take us through the next three."
Williamson, the ...

Wes Craven was spot on a few weeks back when he mentioned that as far as he understood it, no other characters from the original Scream trilogy except Dewey (David Arquette) and Gail (Courtney Cox-Arquette) would return for a fourth movie, but surprisingly it's news to screenwriter Kevin Williamson.

The series creator has updated his Twitter account with a distraught message, sounding dejected to hear that Neve Campbell has turned down the picture....
Trying to figure out a Sid-less scenario. She won’t do it. This sucks
It's the word "trying" that really stopped me in my tracks. That sounds like it's taking effort, as if he has wrote most of the screenplay with her involved and now has to change everything because Neve just won't come back.

Previously though all hints were that the movie would focus on a new group of young teenagers with only cameo's for any of the returning cast. Surely Williamson wasn't planning on having her be the killer this time around, because that would be pretty lame wouldn't it?

If there was only a way I could hack into his hard drive and find out for myself right now!

Simon Reynolds from Digital Spy has in the last ten minutes pointed me towards an exclusive interview he conducted with the legendary Wes Craven who was refreshingly chatty about what the status is right now with the resurrected Scream franchise.

He confirms that Scream creator Kevin Williamson is now writing (he expects to see it in August) the first of a "brand new trilogy" (which first seemed like an outlandish rumor back in February) and that he himself is so far remaining cautious, agreeing to The Weinsteins offer of reading the script, but only that for now.

Although he doesn't yet know the premise, he does know a few big bits of odds and ends, including the biggest hint yet that no part has been written for Neve Campbell, and also that last weeks story of The Arquettes coming back to the series was true...
"I've been told, and I don't think they'll mind if I say this, the deals on David Arquette and Courteney are virtually set. I believe everybody else will be new."
Which of course will make us all believe throughout the movie that this unseen killer will probably end up being Sidney.

So it seems Williamson has more in mind than a meta-meta-physical movie as ...

Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson's groundbreaking slasher Scream series was always the most cerebral of the horror movies. The first Scream (1996) being a homage of the whole slasher genre, Scream 2 (1997) being a send off of horror sequels and the third and the least successful of the franchise, Scream 3 (2000), looked at the arc of trilogy conventions.

Here we are in June 2009, nine years after the series ended, and over a decade since screenwriter Williamson wrote a single word for this universe (he didn't write the third movie) and we know that Williamson has just completed a screenplay for a fourth movie. At the moment, we are left wondering just what theme he is going to pursue and we should remind ourselves that no-one had been banging down on his door to make this film. He obviously has an idea he wants to share here, he is the one who went to The Weinsteins and made a deal to resurrect this series long after it was buried, so he obviously has something he wants to say.

So naturally, with the modern state of horror, you immediately think "remakes" would be the theme as Williamson who hasn't wrote a feature film ...

FACT: Kevin Williamson, the writer of SCREAM is currently drafting a SCREAM 4.

FACT: The script will be based on a younger cast (or a cast, the same age as Cox, Arquette & Campbell were 15 years ago) but it has to be completed before it can be greenlit by The Weinsteins.

FACT: Roles will be written for the survivors of the original trilogy but they will only be cameo's and can easily be written out if the actors don't fancy a return.

FACT: Wes Craven will read the script and if he likes it, will direct. He has said so himself many times over the course of the last two months.

So what is this crazy assed rumor? Well this screengrab that has fallen into the hands of Rope of Silicon via Ghostface which is supposdley from the desk of Kevin Williamson who announces that not only have The Weinsteins greenlit a new SCREAM movie but that they have greenlit a brand new trilogy...

I hate posting rumors (though lately, I seem to have done a lot of it) but I couldn't help but not write about this, as far fetched as it sounds.

I mean The Weinsteins wouldn't commit to three new HALLOWEEN movies until ...

What has happened to the horror villains of the 80s? Once upon a time we had Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Charles Lee Ray (Chucky) and, of course, Jason and Mrs. Vorhees. This decade was the heyday for character-driven horrors that saw a particular spectre terrorise the lives of innocent civilians. Nowadays we just can't match that kind of wild imagination, we are stuck with churned out remakes (we've seen MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D and FRIDAY THE 13th already in the last month) or botched reworkings of Asian psychological and supernatural horrors (let's just not watch THE UNINVITED). The only thing that came close was SAW's Jigsaw, but he's been dragged on for so long that even some original fans have drifted away from the franchise. So where did it all go wrong?

The horror villain has been around for as long as horror itself, so there's no point going way back. But the orgiastic killing held together purely by a frightening and well-constructed killing machine began to take shape in the 70s. Gone were all the draculas and mummies and indiscriminate ghosts, they metamorphosed into something far less recognisable. Ghosts inhabited bodies which themselves became scary, like in THE EXORCIST, and ...

Bloody Disgusting have some facts on SCREAM 4, officially announced as "in development" by The Weinsteins in July...
Fact #1: Kevin Williamson (writer of two of the SCREAM films (character credit on third)) is going to start writing a draft, although it may or may not become the shooting script (which is typical).

Fact #2: Wes Craven may or may not direct, but there is a very good possibility that he will return.

Fact #3: They are making financial offers to David Arquette, Courtney Cox Arquette and Neve Campbell to play cameos.

Fact #4: This will be a younger version of the SCREAM movies.
In July, we heard Wes Craven wouldn't automatically say "no" to return for a fourth movie, the first in nine years.

Not to sound pessimistic because I actually believe that all three of the SCREAM movies are very good (the first one is one of THE movies of the 90's) but I'm not really that interested in seeing Arquette, Cox and Campbell only return for cameo's to presumably be killed off. That just won't do it for me.

Those characters were so well written and rich. By the third movie they were kind of like old friends to us. I want to see ...

I honestly thought by the time that Wes Craven directed his first movie in five years with Red Eye in 2005 that we would never seen him return to the Scream franchise. It really felt like he had done and said all he wanted to with the series.

With all the outlandish scoops we've heard over the years for a fourth film, I kept confident he would resist the urge of going back but in the last month or so, it really does look like it's happening this time around. We've heard the Weinsteins have a script they have greenlit, the first that has fallen into their laps in years that they think is good enough to film.

Could Craven be convinced to return? We know he is currently his first originally written slasher in YEARS with 25/8 which is due out next year... he's done sequels before to his franchises after a long gap (he did the last Freddy solo movie New Nightmare in 1994).

Maybe he could do for Freddy, what he did for Scream? Craven spoke at the Con...
"There has been contact. I haven't spoken to Bob Weinstein but they have checked with my agent. I'm not saying 'no.'"

UPDATED: Actually I was wrong below. The added trailer footage is just as bad as written, BORING!

This movie looks way to Bayified and glossy to be a Friday the 13th picture. Obviously I need a better copy than this to give a full opinion but I hated what I saw here...

END OF UPDATE

You know, I've been very critical of the "lazy" film-making movement in the modern day horror genre that has seen almost all of the significant horror films of the 70's and 80's remade or currently being developed for a remake but in truth, films like Rob Zombie's Halloween and Marcus Nispel's remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are not without merit.

Be pissed at them all you like... I know I was and still am, but Nispel's Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the better slasher films of this decade... if that is really saying much. Rob Zombie's Halloween is probably the third best movie in that long running series and actually made the "The Shape" effective like no-one had for YEARS.

Not a patch on the original films yes, but a lot better than the remakes of Asian horror's that are even more frequent right now.

It's just annoying these ...

The film takes place over the course of a day as the mystery of who (or what) is stalking the small-town high schoolers unfolds.

Do some of the characters end up in a bad way from a super ambulance crash, fire and explosion?

Yeah really guys, I jumped too and I wasn't even there.
Really looking forward to this one. I enjoyed neither of his post-Scream series movies Red Eye and Cursed but there seems to be something different about this one. This is the Wes Craven who not so much has something to prove but may this time, more so than his recent previous work, have a real desire to deliver us something that the genre has been lacking recently.
And that's some god damn originality.

Henry Lee Hopper - the son of legendary actor Dennis has dropped out what was shaping up to be his debut lead role in a big movie. The reason being he has conducted the mononucleoss illness is unable to join the cast for the production start on Wes Craven's new movie 25/8 which begins at the end of this month.

The Hollywood Reporter say Jumper star Max Thieriot will replace him. He's the young 19 year old actor who unbelievably was allowed to audition for the role of The Flash last summer in the currently delayed Justice League movie.

The Rogue Pictures film will see Theirot play the lead role of Bug, one of seven teens haunted by a serial killer who supposedly died when they were born 15 years earlier. The film takes place over the course of a day as the mystery of who (or what) is stalking the small-town high schoolers unfolds.

The really young cast saw Denzel Whitaker, Shareeka Epps and Emily Meade cast some time ago as other teen victims. Recently joining the cast are Nick Lashaway, John Magaro, Zena Grey, Ana Cruz Kayne and Paulina Olszynski with Raul Esparza in final talks to play the serial killer.

Sorry for the obvious false headline which I tried to catch you out with.

The Hollywood Reporter say it will be Henry Lee Hopper (who is actually the son of Dennis) and Denzel Whitaker (no relation to Forest, despite some resemblance) who will co-star along with Shareeka Epps and Emily Meade as the foursome of unknowns in Wes Craven's new horror movie 25/8.

Craven's idea is to go with unknowns for the main players so that no star power will suggest who lives or dies. It's not a new horror trait and he of course has used this technique himself with the castings of both Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Hopper, the son of Dennis Hopper, will play the lead role of Bug, one of seven teens haunted by a serial killer who supposedly died when they were born 15 years earlier. The film takes place over the course of a day as the mystery of who (or what) is stalking the small-town high schoolers unfolds.
Sounds an awful lot like Scream and the whole movie has that sense about it. The sense that Wes Craven is going to reinvent the genre again, that he's going to get back to his best ...

Have you ever seen Wes Craven's debut movie The Last House on the Left?

I've only become accustomed to it in the last year or so, it's a really nasty and horrifying horror movie. It's unsettling. The film is about escaped convicts who take two teenage girls hostage and contains at least 30 minutes of the most brutal and shocking dehumanizing of film characters you will ever see in your life.

Forget the torture porn movies that are plaguing our cinema screens right now. This one is the real deal...

Man, I hope they keep that advertising campaign for the remake.
We've known for a while now that Wes Craven was receiving a nice wad of cash for allowing his most disturbing horror movie to be remade, just like he did a few years ago with The Hills Have Eyes.
Variety say that Monica Potter (from Along Came A Spider) and Tony Goldwyn (The Last Samurai) have been cast, probably as the parents of the two girls.
David Iliadis will be making his Hollywood directing debut with the picture which will shoot this month in South Africa. Can it be possibly be as disturbing as the original?

Have details finally emerged of Wes Craven's mysterious new project which we first caught wind of way back in September 2006?

Bloody Disgusting have learnt that Craven is ready to film 25/8, a horror movie that he has wrote and will direct out in Connecticut.

Here's the plot...
As legend has it, a notorious serial slayer will return to the sleepy community of Riverdale to finish off the seven children born on the night he purportedly died. But is the slayer really dead, or is he still at large? Or has the mysterious evil personality that once impelled his bloody spree entered the body of an unwary teen, who will now be compelled to do his evil bidding?
Sounds pretty cool.

Craven's been completely off the mark since his SCREAM series ended with the back-to-back yarn fests that were CURSED and RED EYE but remember, this will mark the first project he will direct from his OWN screenplay. Something he hasn't done since NEW NIGHTMARE, the last stand-alone Freddy Krueger movie.

And that movie frikkin' ruled.

I would love to see Craven return to his serious best. In fact I would argue we NEED to see him at his best, for the sake of the genre!
