First off, my apologies for the radio silence recently- I have become somewhat of a Hunter S Thompson wannabe, and decided that the best approach to journalism is one liberally peppered with sordid antics and debauchery doused in alcohol. Apparently this doesnt go down so well with the powers that be, and my wrists are well and trully slapped, so Im going to be uber-professional and not let myself or anyone else down. Plus I'm never drinking again thanks to this hangover.

As if by magic, today is another double whammy, thanks to the technical mishap last week that prematurely killed the website, and because of the poor releases that week not really warranting a late write up on their own. So here goes...

20th July Releases

I'd call this a pretty weak week if I was feeling particularly harsh, which I am. It is perhaps fairer to consider this week as the lull before Watchmen hits the market next week- though the way that has been handled in marketing terms looks to be a fucking joke in comparison to the heavy-handed assault that was the pre-cinematic campaign. And for anyone who hasnt seen the covers yet- be prepared to be thoroughly underwhelmed! Anyway, ...

Watchmen, officially the most commented film on Obsessed With Film in 2009 (yes, it beats out comments on Star Trek and the upcoming Batman 3) is released today in the U.K. on Blu-Ray and DVD.

To celebrate the release, OWF's Martyn Conterio spoke to Dave Gibbons, the co-creator of the Watchmen 12 issue mini-series, and the man responsible for fleshing out Alan Moore's writings with groundbreaking artwork and character designs. At this point, I also want to mention Gibbons' book Watching the Watchmen which I can't recommend highly enough.

Did you ever think Watchmen would ever become a landmark graphic novel?
No, I don’t think we ever thought that. We set out to do the type of comic book we wanted to read. By the time we worked on it, Alan Moore and I had worked on some shorter pieces and we were just happy to have the chance to do something big and substantial. What I remember was the fun we had doing it. There was very little interference from DC Comics and we certainly didn’t approach it with a sense of ‘this is going to be a significant comic’. If we’d approached it like that we’d have never been able to do ...

So here we have the first of my weekly columns charting a choice selection of exactly what DVDs are out this week- obviously not everyone made the cut, and to those of you who failed, let me say this- Movie Reviewing is a squad game, and these guys wouldn’t be anywhere without your help and continued support. But let’s be honest, you just werent flaming good enough…

Release Date:April 6th 2009

Probably an idea to start with the biggest release of the week…

Twilight

See my review here.

Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa

Not a bad sequel, but then it was somewhat superfluous in my eyes. I didn’t enjoy Madagascar apart from in all too fleeting flashes-David Schwimmer’s neurotic giraffe Melmann and Sacha Baron Cohen’s King Julien. But the laughs were a little hard to come by, and I wasn’t that impressed with the stylised animation.. But Madagascar 2 has at least redressed that issue- tightening the sloppy edges, and featuring some impressive live-action style camera work.

The only problem is that Madagascar 2 introduces too many characters, losing a considerable amount of the character focus of the first movie, and seeks success by pushing the same old jokes from the first film further- so Mold ...

There are perhaps several reasons of why not to see this month's release of Warner Bros' WATCHMEN. Firstly it's produced by a major studio, who's risk aversion, play-it-safe strategy goes completely at odds with the narrative’s view of sadomasochistic superheroes (although they have thrown in some slow-mo violence so that probably made it ok).

Secondly it's directed by the fella who missed the point of Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD and somehow managed to make Frank Miller's 300 even more fascistic (unbelievable I know). Add to that the fact that its been raped into a consumer cash cow (check out the Watchmen lunchboxes and Rorschach action figures!), been deemed unfilmible by genre heavy weight Terry Gilliam, written by the guy who also penned THE SCORPION KING and, interestingly had Zach the director already tell us that the DVD will be better.

But, of course, none of this really matters. Any film, regardless of how auspicious the origins, has the potential to be worthwhile. After all, this is also a project based on the work of one of the greatest writers of the late 20th century. But then that's the problem, innit? Go and see the movie, and you won't find the name Alan Moore ...

"Please go see the movie again next weekend" writes David Hayter, one half of the screenwriters behind WATCHMEN in an open plea for fanboys to put down their pitchforks and see the movie a second time (or a first in some cases) before casting hateful judgement.

Believing the future integrity of "the adaptation" is at stake, Hayter hints that now that we have come to a place where we have banished the FROM HELL's and LEAGUE OF EXTRAORIDNARY GENTLEMEN'S from our memories into an era where THE DARK KNIGHT and WATCHMEN can exist, we can't let it slip by the way side again.
"You have to understand, everyone is watching to see how the film will do in its second week. If you care about movies that have a brain, or balls, (and this film’s got both, literally), or true adaptations — And if you’re thinking of seeing it again anyway, please go back this weekend, Friday or Saturday night. Demonstrate the power of the fans, because it’ll help let the people who pay for these movies know what we’d like to see. Because if it drops off the radar after the first weekend, they will never allow a film like this ...

Release Date: 9th March 2009

Now I’ve seen the movie proper, and the dust has had time to settle after the giddy excitement of expectation subsided I feel more able to offer a review of this motion comic accompaniment to the greatest graphic novel of all time. And I was willing to give the DVD a fair viewing, despite any misgivings I may have had about the long and ominous shadow of the Almighty Dollar over the affair.

Motive is always the key- just ask Monsieur Poirot. So I freely admit that it was with no small amount of cynical trepidation that I embarked on the mammoth five hour experience that is the WATCHMEN MOTION COMICS. Surely this has got to be another financial ploy from Warner Brothers- a play for the loosely gripped dollars that have no doubt made their way out of every Fanboy’s pockets since the otherwise impeccable marketing campaign for WATCHMEN began.

Firstly, who is this development for? Apart from those who habitually seek every available shiny bit of merchandise attached to a comic/film, I simply cannot work out who this is really aimed at. The WATCHMEN comic book fans may well feel begrudged that the object of their ...

So here I am, sitting at my desk some four days after having seen WATCHMEN.

It has literally taken me this long to calm myself down, to clear my head and get into the right mindset to write about my feelings on the movie.

This probably won't be a review as such as I'm not even sure if a review is particularly necessary at this point given that every movie blog and half-assed film outlet has given their two cents already, including perfectly fine reviews by Obsessed With Film's own Mike Edwards and Ray DeRousse. And all you guys have let us know what you thought of the film already.

But I almost feel like I need to give WATCHMEN a sense of closure by writing up my two cents. It's been an awfully long journey watching this project develop over the past two decades, as new creative teams became attached, were convinced they were able to make a WATCHMEN movie the way they wanted it, only for studio interference and a sudden lack of balls, to foil them.

One of the saddest days I remember as a comic book fan following the Hollywood industry is the week the Paul Greengrass production of WATCHMEN shut ...

Wow, it's weird that WATCHMEN is this juggernaut of a film release.

Only four years ago, around the time of the BATMAN BEGINS release, barely anyone I spoke to knew of Alan Moore's great graphic novel and any attempt to try and get them to read it was quickly dismissed with a "comics are for girls". Well, box office receipts will show there are many girls who watch movies this weekend.

Just weird. And it's so right that so many people are intrigued by the yellow imagery and are seeing the movie this weekend but know absolutely nothing about what it is they will see.

Ah the time for talk is done. The movie is out NOW and I wanna hear your feedback. (and it's the hottest ticket in town, today's showings are all but sold out in multiple cinema's in my area).

If you see the movie, YOU HAVE TO LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK HERE (spoilers allowed). SERIOUSLY, COMMENT IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE, IT'S THE ONLY WAY THIS KIND OF POST WILL WORK.

Did Zack Snyder knock it out of the park. Is this the WATCHMEN we deserve after two decades of waiting?

Do let us know.

24 hours away from WATCHMEN and I find myself encouraged by reading the last paragraph of Roger Ebert's review which once again delves into what I've been hearing most about this movie from those who have seen it.

It's an experience. And something you simply have to check out for yourself. Whether you like it or not, it's one of those movies...
The film is rich enough to be seen more than once. I plan to see it again, this time on IMAX, and will have more to say about it. I’m not sure I understood all the nuances and implications, but I am sure I had a powerful experience. It’s not as entertaining as “The Dark Knight,” but like the “Matrix” films, LOTR and “The Dark Knight,” it’s going to inspire fevered analysis. I don’t want to see it twice for that reason, however, but mostly just to have the experience again.

Ah, it's that time of year again. The cold snows of Winter are about to thaw, new leaves begin to bud on the trees and the stream of Oscar films are making way for the torrent of big budget blockbusters. First on the list is the heavily-hyped and long-awaited adaptation of the Watchmen graphic novel. A complicated and detailed tale of an alternate history in which superheroes were embraced as bringers of justice, only to gradually become marginalised as dangerous and unregulated menaces to society. Interweaving the story of two generations, the story is an expansive discussion of power and justice that draws in detail on the lives of 8 (yes, eight) heroes.

However, amid the accusations that WATCHMEN will be confusing and complicated, it is worth remembering that the director is Zack Snyder: the man who implified and stylised 300 SPARTANS in to 300, and took the politicized zombie world George Romero and made the glossy 2004 version of DAWN OF THE DEAD.

His work on WATCHMEN is no different. The story is broken down admirably well, and told in a series of sequences that are absorbing, exciting and, perhaps best of all, manageable. Sure it's a plot with several big ...

Zack Snyder's WATCHMEN premiered in London last night with the majority of the cast in attendance, and OWF reader Jezza, who was less than impressed by the Warner Bros. spectacle...
Attended premier last night in the first 10 minutes thought “here we go” however the rapidly chaged to when can i leave. No strong performances and a story line which left me baffled and bored i,m afraid. Gutted as was really looking forward to this adaption of the novel, glad i was not alone in the stampede for the exits as the credits came up. If you really have nothing to do for 3 hours of your life go for it otherwise avoid at all costs, or at best wait untill it,s on DVD and only then when its reduced to a pound in Blockbuster.
Which is a pretty consistent review compared to the other early feedback we recieved towards the end of last week.

WATCHMEN opens in the U.K. and U.S. on March 6th and has probably had more negative reviews already than THE DARK KNIGHT had when every press outlet in town had given their two cents.

Early WATCHMEN reviews are coming in and from the sounds of things they are falling slightly more on the negative than the positive side.

On the plus side, the word is the movie is extremely faithful to the Alan Moore graphic novel which is great to hear after what happened with FROM HELL and THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN.

On the negative side, it's said Zack Snyder forgot he was making a movie and not just images from the graphic novel looking pretty on screen.

Hollywood Elsewhere got this in from an annymous reviewer...
“Speaking as a huge admirer and devotee of the graphic novel, the film is a staggering failure. On the plus side, you’ve got a pretty literal adaptation of the source material. It is at times a meticulous and gorgeous recreation of Alan Moore’s original work. Unfortunately it’s an empty, inert, meandering and, yes, boring 2 hours and 45 minutes. Oh, and it’s horribly acted throughout.” … “Watchmen is just not much of a movie. It has no narrative pull and no characters to in. It uses rotely shoehorned-in action scenes, and has a sheen that doesn’t befit the dark material.”
And on the same site, another reviewer, who liked the opening credits but...

Collider have learnt the three different running times for WATCHMEN...

The theatrical cut we will see in just a matter of weeks will be 156 minutes long, just over 2 hours and a half in length.

The director's cut, which will be found on the Blu-Ray and DVD release of the film will clock in at 156 minutes.

The director's cut, which if you include the TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER release (the animated short starring Gerard Butler which tells the famous side story in the graphic novel) will make the movie a massive 205 minutes long.

An epic LORD OF THE RINGS style picture. Can't wait to see it.

In the U.K, this DVD set will be released on April 9th, just as WATCHMEN is starting to leave theatres. Remember, it will have the full story of the TALES FROM THE BLACK FREIGHTER which is not included in the theatrical release of the film...
Priced at £9.99 RRP on DVD and £14.99 RRP on Blu-ray Disc, both sets include the main feature (25mins) and special features (84mins). The DVD is presented in anamorphic widescreen with English DD5.1 Surround audio, while the Blu-ray is 1080P with English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio. Extras include:

	Under the Hood
	Story Within ...

Awesome.... I can't believe so many people I know who aren't comic book geeks, are just so rabidly excited for this one. Warner Bros. have once again struck gold with their marketing, just like they did with THE DARK KNIGHT last year.

Less than a month away now until we will be watching the WATCHMEN!

/film have deduced from a Paramount Pictures press release that a third trailer for J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK will be attached to prints of WATCHMEN opening March 6th.

As usual it's unclear if this is all prints of WATCHMEN (U.K. and U.S.) but as the key audience will be the comic book geeks and with WATCHMEN so far suceeding in reaching out to the wider audience where I think TREK has so far failed, it's no surprise to hear of this announcement.

TREK badly needs WATCHMEN's help.

I've been more than a little underwhelmed by all the footage we have seen from the TREK reboot so far and I think this project is in danger of two things...

1) Alienating the current fans of TREK by making it "dumbed down" cliched sci-fi/action drivel which represents little of the atmosphere or themes of the original show.

2) Not being broad enough to hit the wide audience it surely needs with a budget that exceeds $150 million. But when was a TREK movie ever going to make that kind of money?

I know those two points sound like a contradiction and maybe they are but you get my point. This project, the way they are making it, never had a ...

Details of the 20th Century Fox/Warner Bros. settlement have emerged, with /film filling us on in the details...

Fox are receiving between $5 and $10 million upfront, which will include the $1.4 million of development and legal fees for the case.
Fox will get a gross total of around 5% and 8.5% of the final worldwide box office gross. Which if the movie makes say $400 million worldwide, is very substantial.
Fox will also be in line to receive financial incentives from future WATCHMEN sequels, spin-off's etc. If Warner Bros. are so tempted to go to the well again like they did with 300.

20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. have come to a settlement over the rights issue for the big screen adaptation of WATCHMEN and according to The Hollywood Reporter, both studios will present a joint statement of intent today to Judge Gary Fees that the case be immediately dismissed.

In the end, as we probably all expected them to, Fox agreed that cash pay outs was the fairest settlement.

Although we still await to hear how big the upfront payment is to Fox, it's expected to be sizable. At least double figure millions and Fox will also take a percentage of WB's final box office gross, which will obviously be the easiest money they will make all year. It's % will be worth an awful lot as we expect WATCHMEN to be one of the most popular movies of the year, so the final figure will be of great interest whenever it is released.

And mostly importantly for us the fans, it means WATCHMEN will open March 6th worldwide and that Fox are not distributing the film and nor are they going to edit a single frame of the movie.

They settled for cash only and it's probably a good thing, because their past record ...
