BLOOD DIAMOND was one of my absolute favourite films of 2006 and it hasn't taken long for director Edward Zwick to return to work and get us excited about one of his movies again.

Opening on December 26th (yeah we got a long while yet) will be DEFIANCE, a World War II movie starring Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell as three Jewish brothers who escape from Nazi-occupied Poland into the Belarussian forest, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village of a 1,000 people in the forest in order to protect themselves and others in danger.

It's one of those "it's so bizarre it's gotta be true stories" and if you can't wait till Christmas it is chronicled in the book Defiance: The Bielski Partisans which you can purchase HERE.

I like the trailer quite a bit. Bell, Craig and Schreiber are surprisingly quite convincing as brothers and the action scenes look just as powerful and heart-racingly intense as they were in Zwick's last movie.

It starts off brilliantly (and kinda eerie) and it looks like the whole film is going to be built around Daniel Craig and his incredible looking performance. And boy he is really ...

If you believe that you will God damn believe anything.

Blackfilm are reporting that model and sometimes "attempted" actress Naomi Campbell has dropped out of Spike Lee's upcoming war movie MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA because of scheduling conflicts. Lee quickly replaced her with Kerry Washington (pictured left), the well respected actress who you will have seen in THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND and the two FANTASTIC FOUR movies (where her small scenes outshone everyone else).

I say Lee finally came to his senses after a casting decision that baffled us all back in September and cast a solid actress of real pedigree when it became obvious this Campbell thing wasn't going to work out.

Spike Lee's movie is an answer to the classic Hollywood war picture whose absence of black soldiers has angered and disgusted the veteran helmer. MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA tells the story of four black American soldiers who get trapped in a Tusan Village in Italy during 1944.

First still of the movie which at this point still does not have a distributor was released this week...

Bryan Singer's next movie VALKYRIE has once again gone through a release date change and will now open on October 3rd 2008.

United Artists decided to push back the feature once it learned that Universal had strategically moved WANTED from it's March opening to June 27th, the same weekend as VALKYRIE and Pixar's WALL-E.

Not wanting to be part of a three way battle against two bid budgeted movies, the film will now open against Guy Ritchie's gangster movie RocknRolla (by then, 8 years since Ritchie's last commercial success) and the Sony comedy NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST, starring SUPERBAD's Michael Cera.

Personally, I didn't think they needed to worry too much about WANTED but certainly WALL-E was a worry for them. This October release would now seem to make more sense not only because of its competition but also because of the climate of films during that period.

This is more of a serious drama/thriller, and opening at this point should see it win over a certain type of crowd that it wouldn't in the Summer entertainment season.

United Artists are suffering because of the strike too.

Just after the news that Sony's ANGELS & DEMONS had been delayed because of the strike, comes word that Oliver Stone's next production PINKVILLE will suffer the same fate because the script is simply not in shooting condition.

The movie which was to star Bruce Willis as Army Gen. William R. Peers, the real life guy who supervised the investigation into the massacre by U.S. soldiers of as many as 500 My Lai villagers, most of them unarmed women, children and elderly... now has no firm start date.

Willis, screenwriter Mikko Allane and Oliver Stone himself were all in favour of the decision leading us to believe that once the strike is over and the project gets off the ground again, they will all be involved. Though the delay could put in jeopardy the castings of the supporting players... Channing Tatum, Woody Harrelson, Michael Pena, Michael Pitt, Toby Jones, Xzibit and Jon Bernthal.

Usually I'm not one to anticipate an Oliver Stone movie but I did like the sound of this one. I am a fan of PLATOON and this movie was to see Stone work in the same kind of area and I was ...

It's a little unfair maybe to call this move exploitational because...

A) A deal like this just doesn't happen in a few days.

B) It's a deal secured by his son.

But still the timing is curious on this one.

Three days after Norman Mailer's death on Saturday night and it's been reported by The Hollywood Reporter that his son John has secured the film rights to his father's debut 1948 novel THE NAKED AND THE DEAD and has revealed plans to produce the film alongside the media company Tar Art.

The book as you can tell clearly from the cover is a war novel which is actually based on Mailer's own World War II experiences.

THE NAKED AND THE DEAD has already received the big screen treatment before, all the way back in 1958 from one of Hollywood's earliest action directors Raoul Walsh. The movie starred Aldo Ray and a certain Cliff Robertson, the latter of whom would go on to play Uncle Ben in the SPIDER-MAN movies.

He's the one on the right here from this still from the film...

From Wiki...

Set in the South Pacific and dealing primarily with a single reconnaissance platoon of riflemen, the novel contains several combat scenes, but focuses on the ...

Pinkville is an interesting movie, or at least I think it is. The movie will see Bruce Willis and Olivier Stone work together for the first time in their careers, a pairing of talent I just never thought I would ever see.

I've made no secret of my feelings on Olivier Stone. I admire his talents as a filmmaker and I admire his honesty and integrity when dealing with historical and political themes which other directors would balk at, but his movies just feel so angry to me. So intense and maybe pretentious at times.

The Hollywood Reporter are telling us today that Woody Harrelson (from Stone's Natural Born Killers) and Michael Pena (from Stone's World Trade Center) have been cast in his next movie, a mystery drama based on the infamous 1968 My Lai Massacre, in which as many as 500 women and children were slaughtered by U.S. soldiers.

Harrelson will play Col. Henderson, the conflicted officer in charge of the task force that committed the massacre. Pena's role is currently undisclosed. Willis we already know will play William R. Peers, the guy who investigated the massacre and Channing Tatum is the army helicopter pilot who aided the villages.

The film is pre-strike, ...

Best get a move on Quentin... Guy Ritchie is looking to beat you to the post.

The biggest surprise of the pre-strike movie list last month was the news that Snatch and Lock Stock director Guy Ritchie was attached to direct a remake of The Dirty Dozen!

Was Ritchie really thinking about remaking an American classic?

The answer is yes. However, he will be shooting The Gamekeeper first.

The Gamekeeper is a Virgin Comics mini-series that Guy Ritchie himself put together with the intention that it might make a film somewhere down the road.

This movie will be pre-strike (from Amazon)...
Patience is the virtue of the gamekeeper. Waiting for the right moment to strike anything that threatens the balance between man and nature. He is nature's remedy to man's disease. Brock lives a quiet existence as Gamekeeper on a secluded Scottish estate, until paramilitary mercenaries storm the estate and kill Jonah Morgan - the owner and Brock's friend. Now, Brock faces his dark past and the events he had sworn he'd forget. Obliged to avenge Jonah's death, Brock must leave his tranquil life and journey deep into an unfamiliar, urban underworld but as he gets pulled in deeper, it's difficult to tell who has more ...

In 1989, Brian De Palma at the top of his career after having just directed SCARFACE and THE UNTOUCHABLES, his two massive mainstream hits - decided to tackle the anti-war film CASUALTIES OF WAR, at a time just before the Gulf War had begun.

The film made no disguises of it's message, a the title suggests the film showed how people's morality were lost on the battlefield as they became savages with the power of the gun and it attempted to de-glamorize the Vietnam and war itself that cinema was projecting at the time.

It's a great film if you ever get chance to see it. Starring Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn, in what I believe is one of Fox's strongest performances.

Now, after the miserable failures THE BLACK DAHLIA, FEMME FATALE and MISSION TO MARS, De Palma is probably at the lowest point of his directing career (Remember, he was even going to direct a prequel to THE UNTOUCHABLES, and probably still will after this) and has fascinatingly decided to deal with the war issue once again.

His next movie REDACTED, has been put together from YouTube clips, a French documentary, and fictional fragments from soldier's to create a digital film that ...

VALKYRIE is one of the most intriguing projects in production right now. Bryan Singer has put together an awesome set of British character actors like Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Izzard, Terrence Stamp and Kevin McNally who will then mix with the awesome talents of Tom Cruise, Carice Van Houten and Thomas Kretschmann.

And let's not forget David Bamber from ROME as Adolf Hitler.

Great plot, great actors and a great director who is hungry to get back in the saddle with some good material. I'm not saying it will be the best movie of 2008 but if it's not in the Top Ten then we are set for one hell of a year.

Variety say Derek Luke has been tapped up by Spike Lee for the lead role in THE MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA, the World War II drama he is directing out in Italy. The trade say that Wesley Snipes had been previously hired for the role (although I don't remember hearing that) but tax problems stopped him for leaving the U.S to join up with the crew in Europe.

Luke then, is 33 and actually 12 years younger than Snipes and with considerably less experience. He has a role as an Army Ranger in the upcoming Robert Redford political drama LIONS FOR LAMBS and was previously in FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and CATCH A FIRE.

In Spike Lee's film, Luke will play one of the four U.S. Army all-black 92nd division who get separated from their squad behind enemy lines, where they find humanity in a small Tuscan village of St. Anna. Racism, and America's view on black soldiers during the World War II is the subject matter Lee is dealing with here, along with Hollywood's decision to omit black actors from movies dealing with the war.

Also on board are John Turturro, James Gandolfini, Adrian Washington, Michael Ealy, Omar Benson, Naomi Campbell, Tony Kittles ...

So here we were, thinking Quentin Tarantino was locked away every night in his hotel room writing the script for Inglorious Bastards whilst during the day he would promote his Death Proof movie around Europe. How wrong were, or at least these quotes from the director himself to Rotten Tomatoes suggest so, speaking about the casting process of his film...

I never said it was going to star Bruce Willis, Schwarzenegger and Stallone. I don't know who's going to be in it at this point. I have to write it first. It always starts with me and the characters. Whenever I cast an actor and try to write the character around it I always end up regretting it, so I always try to write the character and cast the actor to fit the character.

See the bold quote?

Now, does he mean he has to complete writing it first or does it mean he hasn't even begun yet?

Come on Quentin, we thought you would have had this done by now. We wanted you to be filming this movie next year and for the first part to be out before the end of the decade, don't tell us you haven't wrote it yet!

I've never heard of The Wild Geese. Apparently it was a late 70's war movie about a group of British mercenaries who are contracted to free an African leader. Sounds like a pretty cool plot and then when you see that Richard Burton, Richard Harris and Roger Moore led the film, then I wonder what I'm waiting for typing this up... and why I'm not out hunting down the original.

Hollywood Gang Productions are the shingle behind the remake and they are currently in talks with Warner Brothers, where producer Gianna Nunnari worked on 300. The remake of this rather forgotten movie came about when Nunnari spoke to director Rupert Sanders, who both remarkably said it was their favourite film.

So of course, they want to remake it just for their own pleasure of doing so and leaving us with a product that is probably half as good as the original. Well, that's usually the way these things go anyway, I can't really say for sure because I haven't seen how good the original is.

Sanders said this to Variety....
"It has it all: great characters, action, plot twists and revenge...We are making a tough film, taking ex-British soldiers from the murky London underworld ...

The recently published book Agent Zizag: A True Story of Nazi Espionage, Love, and Betrayal has just been optioned by New Line with Tom Hanks on board to produce.

The Ben Macintyre book which has only just recently been published in the U.S. to some great reviews, revolves around the true story of British officer Eddie Chapman and his life as a spy on the Germans during the Second World War. The book is actually one of two biographies on Chapman's life that ironically have been released almost at the same time, the other coming from author Nicholas Booth, titled Zizag: The Incredible Wartime Exploits of Double Agent Eddie Chapman.

The deal was said to be a high six figure one but Variety have no more details at this time.

This past year we were lucky enough to see Paul Verhoeven's great WWII movie Black Book where lead actress Carice Van Houten was used as a spy to get close to German officials and what that resulted in for me was one of the most exciting two hours of cinema I have seen this year. There's nothing quite like sharing a secret with a character and putting yourself in their shoes as ...

I'm nearly certain it will only be for a very small role but still it's the first casting we have heard on Spike Lee's upcoming World War II movie Miracle at St. Anna. Her name, model turned 'actress' Naomi Campbell.

This is actually the second time Lee has used Campbell, after he cast her as a call girl in probably his worst movie Girl 6, though you will be forgiven if you can't remember it. Since 1996, Campbell has desperately tried to get herself in the movie industry but has been most unsuccessful with the odd role here and there in flicks no-one remembers.

Campbell broke the news to Vogue UK, which we found over at Cinematical...
"It's a very very small role but it involves subject matter that I'm really passionate about. It's about a regiment of black soldiers based in Tuscany in the Second World War – it's a subject that nobody has ever touched upon. There are all the war time films of course but you never see a black soldier in any of them. I'll do anything for Spike and I really think we should be more educated about the role of people of colour in our history."
Really interested ...

Valkrie hasn’t had the smoothest of shoots up to now. The German government initially didn’t want to play ball with the filmmakers due to star Tom Cruise’s religious beliefs (I would put those words in inverted commas but I’d fear being made fair game) and an accident on set left several extras injured.

Now, however, it seems the film has gotten a much needed stroke of luck. The German Ministry of Defence has granted permission for the Bryan Singer helmed film to shoot at the famous Bendlerblock military building.

The location is pretty integral to the story as it’s not only where the German conspirators came together and hatched their plan to assassinate Hitler, but also where the same conspiritors are executed by Nazi firing squads.

I picked this story up via Hollywood Elsewhere and site editor Jeffrey Wells makes a good point by saying he hopes Singer doesn’t chicken out in the execution scene. It’s not that I dislike Cruise and have the subconcious desire to see his body viciously shredded by bullets, but this movie needs that scene to go the distance if it’s to have any impact.

I can happily watch a Cruise film and divorce myself from his bizarre private life, I enjoy ...

Awesome photo to share with you today from the good folks at The Daily Mail (found via Coming Soon). This is the team of Operation Valkyrie...

From left to right we have Kevin McNally, Christian Berkel, Billy Nighy, Tom Cruise, Terence Stamp, David Schofiled and Kenneth Branagh.

Also in the movie but not pictured above (so we can presume they aren't part of the team) are Carice Van Houten, Stephen Fry, Eddie Izzard, Tom Wilkinson and Thomas Kretschmann. Playing Hitler will be David Bamber, a British actor who plays Marcus Tullius Cicero in Rome.

Seriously can't wait for this one. The movie is directed by Bryan Singer, his first non-comic film movie since Apt Pupil and it revolves around Operation Valkyrie, a failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler.

The movie opens at the end of June next year and it should be a blast.
