Master director David Cronenberg and his new muse Viggo Mortensen have never made a sequel to any movie they have ever made but both enjoyed the 2007 gangster thriller Eastern Promises so much that they are scheduled soon to meet with screenwriter Steven Knight to discuss a follow-up.

Although only a mild commercial hit ($56 million worldwide), Mortensen picked up an Academy Award nomination for his role as the heavily tattooed "undertaker" to the Russian Mafia and the picture was widely regarded as one of Cronenberg's best. In fact, it might be my favourite genre piece Cronenberg has ever made (no small statement) and without spoiling anything, has one of the truly great twists in the history of cinema because you just don't see it coming for so long.

Longer I think, than the time you wait for Harry Lime in The Third Man.

Cronenberg told MTV...
"We are moving forward with it," Cronenberg told MTV News in an exclusive chat. "We all are excited about the idea of doing a sequel."

"We are going to have a meeting very soon between me, Steve Knight and Paul Webster to discuss what the script would be," Cronenberg said. "I have some very strong ideas about what I ...

GOOD premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival but despite some early raving reviews, the buzz has gone eerily and worryingly quiet since. I can't help but think it's the accent thing again, a movie about German history with German characters but with actors talking in English.

It seems to be a move backwards, especially just a year after Viggo Mortensen himself won an Academy Award nomination for his fantastic transformation into a Russian (accent included) for EASTERN PROMISES.

But in any event, this movie looks really strong in every other aspect. It's the tale of how good and moral German men became wrapped up into the Nazi regime and were seduced, often by their own cowardice and weak mindedness to become part of something evil.

Jason Isaacs, Mark Strong, Steven Mackintosh and Gemma Jones co-star.

The movie still has no release date and much like Viggo's other upcoming movie THE ROAD, it does look like it's going to be a quietly released 2009 film, unfortunately.

Awards Daily have premiered a new poster for the movie, which I have featured below after the jump...

The Hollywood Reporter say execs from Dimension and The Weinsteins are meeting today to discuss whether the Viggo Mortensen starring thriller THE ROAD, based on Cormac McCarthy's apocalyptic novel is going to make a release this year.

Recently the film was quietly pushed back till December from it's mid-November release to allow director John Hillcoat to finish his movie but according to the trades, a early bow in 2009 seems likely.

One thing that has been mentioned is that an expected contender for Viggo as Best Actor nom, may diminish the longer the movie is delayed. If it opens a few months in 2009, it may end up in the forgotten realm of the release calendar and won't make this year or next year's awards.

We still await the trailer for this much anticipated movie.

David Cronenberg's recent move into psychological character piece thrillers with the excellent HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and EASTERN PROMISES has seen him enter talks with MGM for their high profile thriller THE MATARESE CIRCLE.

Adapted from a Non-BOURNE Robert Ludlum novel, the movie has Denzel Washington set to star in the two lead picture.

The movie set against the backdrop of the Cold War follows one American and one Soviet who must team together in order to stop a plot to topple the world's governments. Washington will play the American and last month I suggested Viggo Mortensen for the Russian.

The suggestion very much still stands, though one wonders if Mortensen would go to that well with Cronenberg again, even if it did win him an Oscar nom last time around.

Adapted by the ever busy writers of WANTED and 3:10 TO YUMA, the film will begin shooting in the Spring and could be Cronenberg's most commercial vehicle yet.

Those annoyed by Francis Lawrences' adaptation of I Am Legend and it's heavy use of CGI for a tale that could have been told in a claustrophobically small manner, will be happy to hear that director John Hillcoat has made it a point to have no CGI in his end of the world tale adapted from Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer prize winning novel The Road.

Speaking to the USA Today, Hillcoat says only the fictional story of a father and son who travel across a barren and apocalyptic countryside after a mystery catastrophe is made up, the scenery and settings are very real. They shot the film in Pittsburgh...
"It's a beautiful place in fall with the colors changing," Hillcoat says. "But in winter, it can be very bleak. There are city blocks that are abandoned. The woods can be brutal. We didn't want to go the CGI world."

"We wanted the heightened reality in the book."
Opening in the U.S. on November 14th (January in the U.K), Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee play the father and son, in a small role Charlize Theron plays Mortensen's wife and finally Robert Duvall makes up the core cast.

I really did enjoy last year's I Am Legend but ...

How God Damn fantastic is it to see the Western back on our big screens and in such a ballsy awesome way?

I never thought we would see a year quite like 2007 ever again in the genre but we surely did. 3:10 to Yuma - the bad ass Old School Western, best I've seen since the 70's.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - a beautifully evocative poem about one of the legendary figures of the Wild West. A stunningly complex and a film to get totally obsessed about with two fine, fine performances from Casey Affleck and Brad Pitt.

No Country For Old Men/There Will Be Blood. Not your conventional type of Western but Western all the same... and they were the two best movies of last year. Hands down.

Seraphim Falls with Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan. Did you catch that one? It was gloriously violent and hard edged, loved it!

So then comes Appaloosa, directed by and starring Ed Harris and it looks AMAZING.

Just look at the faces, the way Harris shoots the landscape, the dialogue. Let's hope this gets the buzz of last year's Westerns and can help this genre's quick rise and let's hope it ...

Pre-production on The Hobbit is moving quickly now with the final planning nuts and bolts currently being worked out.

According to Variety, it would seem that Fran Walsh and Phillppa Boyens will scribe the script for The Hobbit under the supervision of Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro. This was a partnership (minus Jackson of course) which worked extremely well on the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The bigger news though is that del Toro has approached Viggo Mortensen about reprising his role of Aragon, a character who is not mentioned at all in the original Hobbit book.

del Toro says...
"We will all be involved in the script in some fashion but the exact definition is about a week away, " said del Toro. "I am all for keeping the actors who originated the parts, as much as availability and their willingness will allow."
The trades also mention del Toro has approached both Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis to reprise their roles of Gandalf and Gollum respectively, two characters who play a big part in the novel. Actually I would go one further than that and say both actors have either signed or have shook hands on the deal with a verbal commitment to ...

Can't believe this film isn't getting more buzz but here's our first look at John Hillcoat's (The Proposition) next movie The Road, an adaptation of a Cormac McCarthy novel (he's the guy who wrote No Country For Old Men) and stars Viggo Mortensen, Guy Pearce and Charlize Theron.

Mortensen and his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) most survive whilst travelling through a post-apoclayptic wasteland...

The book is said to be incredible and with a cast of some of Hollywood's finest "actors" and not neccesarily "stars", this one is very high on my radar.

Look for it at the end of November.

We've heard for months now that Guy Pearce would star in THE ROAD, the next adaptation of a Cormac McCarthy novel after the awesome NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

Viggo Mortensen (early reports said that Pearce had replaced Viggo, but that was later squashed) and Charlize Theron star are 100% locked for the picture but we are still awaiting some kind of firm confirmation on Pearce's involvement.

A firm "no comment" was the response that Bloody Disgusting got from Dimension Films when they attempted to get a confirmation on Pearce and also veteran Robert Duvall who their official source claims will have a role in the movie.

All this comes on the day that The Hollywood Reportersay that 11 year old Kodi Smit-McPhee will play Mortensen's son in the tale of a months-long journey across a barren U.S. landscape after a cataclysmic event destroyed most of life on Earth.

If it's any indication of Pearce and Duvall's likely involvment in the picture, the source at BD also told them McPhee would be in the picture before the trade announcement broke this morning.

THE ROAD will begin filming later this month under the lens of John Hillcoat, the director of THE PROPOSITION.
