So here it is, the first Cannes review of 2009- and what better way to announce the start of the ceremony than with the grand unveiling of Disney/Pixar's Up? Forget Inglourious Basterds, forget Taking Woodstock and forget The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, this movie is the centre-piece of this year's fest because it represents something greater than merely a movie. This was the moment that the festival truly embraced the blitzkreig technological advance that is the new 3D Revolution, and subsequently stole a march on a massive portion of the industry, who still lag embarrassingly in terms of the number of screens with 3D capabilities.

But this isnt just notable as the moment Cannes embraced 3D: it is also the moment that this new technological usurper achieves exactly what every new advancement seeks... Today was the day when 3D gained respect. Look beyond Thierry Fremaux's assertion that they opened their doors to 3D because it is "one of cinema's upcoming adventures", and you'll find an unbelievable confidence in the medium. The kind of confidence that would entrust the opening set-piece of the world's premier festival to a relatively new cinematic development- all respect to the exciting 3D productions already being made, this is the validation ...

A New York Times article dated April 9th, claims toy manufacturers and investors behind Pixar's tenth feature film Up, are concerned over how the film is going to perform at a commercial level, and how this well effect other Disney businesses.

I.e. spin-off toys (a movie about a cranky old man and a young sidekick won't rush from the shelves like Wall*E), rides at Disneyland, t-shirts, etc. It's said that most stores are dismissing the idea of stocking Up related merchandise, with most going for the cautious, limited stock approach and even Thinkway Toys, which has worked on making Pixar-related products since 1995’s Toy Story will not produce a single item this time around.

“We doubt younger boys will be that excited by the main character,” Richard Greenfield wrote recently, citing the lack of a female character or someone the young audience can get behind as a reason for the downgrading of Disney shares in March.

Other insiders are saying Pixar is on a sinking slope and that the last few movies (Cars, Ratatouille in parcitcular) have shown a studio on the way down, with Toy Story 3 being a last grasp of desperation to save a failing company. Which of course is a ...

I've been hearing a lot about the presence of a big character in Disney Pixar's upcoming movie UP, none other than a talking dog!

Well this morning, thanks to this newly released full length trailer, I can finally get a glimpse at Dug.

Now Dug is the kind of character that if your not willing to go with as it breaks the laws of any kind of reality, then you might just be turned off by the whole thing. His appearance in the trailer really does have a jarring effect but I don't want to judge it fully until I've seen the finished film and his context as a whole.

Though I will say it seems to be make or break. Has he been added for the kids who might not have been so excited about seeing a movie about an old man adventurer?

But if that's not enough then there's Kevin the rainbow coloured bird and other such creatures and wacky characters that I'm very intrigued to see more from. And we also get our first animated look (we saw the toy last week) of the movie's villain Muntz, as voiced by the legendary Christopher Plummer.

Watch the trailer, full of biplanes, a giant biplane ...

Just like they did with WALL*E, Pixar have done a great job keeping the second half of their movie UP a secret as long as they have.

At this point, we don't really know what happens to our leads Carl and Russell but thanks to /film, and this might be considered as a spoiler for some, we now have a good glimpse of how the villain, Charles Muntz, will look.

Here he is in toy form. The character will be voiced by Christopher Plummer...

UP from the makers of MONSTERS, INC. and will be released on May 29th in the U.S. and October 16th in the U.K.

All the Superbowl teaser trailers in one place. Let me know what you thought! (sorry I sound so negative on so many of these productions but I just report on what I see). It's almost like excluding UP, the best of 2009 has kept away from this extravaganza.

G.I. JOE: RISE OF THE COBRA... cool shots from Stephen Sommers and any trailer that begins with Sienna Miller's breasts catches my attention instantly. BUT, not a good looking movie.

That Eiffel Tower shot is ridiculous. Huge epic feel to this movie, a global story...

TRANSFORMERS 2: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN... which looks fucking awesome from this trailer. The sad reality though is the movie will suck, just on a larger scale than the last one.
I'm thinking this one has less dialogue and lots, lots, lots more action. Which makes for a great movie with some uber cool shots but I'm banking on a bad film come June. If only Michael Bay just made trailers.

STAR TREK... and I now absolutely think young Chris Pine has no chance of making Kirk into an iconic figure. Abrams cast this movie very well but I don't really see leadership in Pine, I don't see a leading man there.
Boy ...

Entertainment Weekly have what they claim is 21 new images from some of the biggest films of this newly birthed year but I'm not sure that's accurate. I'm certain I've seen several of these shots before, even if it's just from a slightly different angle.

So I'm just gonna post the one's which I thought were new or interesting, the rest you can see for yourself HERE.

Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis, the man hired to take chase gangster John Dillinger in Michael Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES...

Dillinger, a man who many consider to be a Robin Hood figure of the early 20th century is played by Johnny Depp...

Bale ain't just taking down Dillinger next year but some TERMINATOR'S too!

John Travolta as the villain terroist in THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 in Tony Scott's remake of the classic 70's thriller...

Pixar's UP!

Jack Black and Michael Cera in Harold Ramis THE YEAR ONE, a movie that hopefully won't just be remembered as being the catalyst for real movement on GHOSTBUSTERS 3.

Pixar are still keeping the big reveals for their next movie UP a secret, teasing us with mentions of "lost world's" and only showing us the first act for their next movie. It's something that has become a working practice for the studio and worked very well with WALL*E for much of that movie's early trailers and t.v. spots.

I'm getting more and more curious by every trailer...

Official plot summary...

Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. "Up" takes audiences on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounter wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures.

UP is released on May 29th 2009 (U.S.) and July 17th 2009 (U.K.) from the creators of MONSTER'S INC.

I haven't seen so much negative anticipation for a Pixar movie ever, I mean there was those that thought CARS was going to suck (which it did) but I don't think it was as overwhelming as the current worried reaction for UP.

I think the problem is that no-one quite knows what the hell the movie is about or how it is going to play out. And posters as obscure as this one released today at Yahoo Movies, don't really help matters...

Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc.) and co-director Bob Peterson's comedic adventure revolves around the friendship between a lonely 78 year old man and a young 8 year old explorer who take on a thrilling and dangerous journey, said to involve "wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures".

The movie opens on May 29th and the extended trailer will either be attached with BOLT in November, or next week's HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3.

Up, is the first Pixar movie in quite some time where a big mystery floats around the project. 12 months ago, we knew an awful lot about Pixar's Wall*E and had seen a good amount of footage for the movie so soon after Ratatouille but Up is a big mystery to me.

So far all the images in my mind revolve around an old guy and a floating house with lots of blue sky. So comes a teaser trailer, showing exactly that...

Coming Soon did get to witness slightly more at the Con...

We were shown footage of Carl, the old man voiced by Ed Asner, about to leave his home to go to a retirement community. But just as they're about to leave with him, he slams the door and suddenly releases hundreds of balloons into the sky. The house lazily begins floating into the air and away from the city. Carl intends to travel to Venezuela to see the remote plateaus and rainforests. He intends to fulfill a promise he made to his deceased wife to go there one day. Just as Carl settles into his living room in the floating house... there's a knock at the door. The director revealed ...
