David Chen of Slash Film is right. It is more interesting to watch the youtubed reactions of over excitable Twilight fans to the trailer for the November released sequel New Moon than it is to watch the actual trailer itself.

I honestly wish I could go into a time machine and skip forward 10 years from now and show them this video when they have a husband and a family; when they have a 9 to 5 and are working their ass off each day just to get by. When reality has taken over their sense of fantasy, and they have more things on their mind than shouting too each other... "He is sooooo HOT and totally my perfect guy. I am in love with Edward". Do they even know he isn't a real person?

In 2019, will they feel embarrassed over those few years when they got completely caught up in this tweeny romance saga?

I know we're no different, the fanboy or the comic book geek which I firmly and proudly apart of...

...except for the fact that we can laugh about ourselves, I think. We are much more self aware about our obsessions and they last longer too (which I can't ...

Now there's a choice that shows the Twilight film series might become something a little less passable for me in the future. Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily claims that David Slade, director of Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night has met with author Stephenie Meyer and the producers behind the third Twilight movie Eclipse.

No deal is signed yet.

But we do know that the producers have also met with Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage). I'm liking their desire to hire someone with a distinctive individual voice, and not a paint by numbers helmer like Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) who is making New Moon, a movie I certainly won't be seeing.

Tonight, I've convinced a few Twilight fanatics I know to come with me and see Let the Right One In at my local theatre. It wasn't particularly hard, they had a vague interest in seeing it in the first place thanks to the universal praise (and rightfully so) the movie has recieved in the U.K. press this month, but also because that Twilight series has brought back a fascination with vampires.

A fascination that for people like me, who was around for the first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who saw Near Dark on VHS at an all too early age, who spent many nights wondering about the pscyhology of Lestat the Vampire after Tom Cruise's amazing performance in Interview with the Vampire.

Man... for a dude who saw The Lost Boys about five times during one horror filled twelve month video binge year in 1997. And that's not to mention Dracula, I Am Legend, Stephen King's novels etc, etc. This is nothing new, the vampire genre has taken up just as many horrors of my reading and viewing life as comic book and superhero's have.

But even with that, even with the countless number of vampire re-tellings I had seen, Let the ...

But let’s be honest, you just werent flaming good enough…

Release Date:April 6th 2009

Probably an idea to start with the biggest release of the week…

Twilight

See my review here.

Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa

Not a bad sequel, but then it was somewhat superfluous in my eyes. I didn’t enjoy Madagascar apart from in all too fleeting flashes-David Schwimmer’s neurotic giraffe Melmann and Sacha Baron Cohen’s King Julien. But the laughs were a little hard to come by, and I wasn’t that impressed with the stylised animation.. But Madagascar 2 has at least redressed that issue- tightening the sloppy edges, and featuring some impressive live-action style camera work.

The only problem is that Madagascar 2 introduces too many characters, losing a considerable amount of the character focus of the first movie, and seeks success by pushing the same old jokes from the first film further- so Mold ...

Oh how I long to hate Twilight and everything it represents- the dust had barely settled on my beloved Harry Potter franchise, with the young wizards all going off and bonking each other, when this emo-shaped vampire slush-fest usurped its crown as the most influential teen book series ever. Okay so maybe that’s a slight over-exaggeration, but I challenge you to go any Twilight forum and type the words Edward Cullen is a Monumental Twat: the chaos, inter-mingled with deep seated anger that ensues is a beautiful thing. Best thing about starting a fight with an emo though, so the saying goes, is rather than attack you, they’ll simply go home and hurt themselves, so everyone’s a winner.

And yet, with a crawling, seething inevitability the film fails to inspire the kind of hatred I really wanted it to- okay so the love story is implausible in its ferocity and there isn’t one ugly or obese kid anywhere in the film, which is equally as implausible when you consider the innumerate Medical Journals claiming that all kids are quivering blobs of Haribo-induced lard, but neither really stop a vague enjoyment of the film.
Probably should take this casting piece with a pinch of salt as it was only last week the news of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL star Vanessa Hudgens auditoning for a part in the movie turned out to be ludicrous gossip.

However E! seem pretty confident that 14 year old actress Dakota Fanning has been offered a part in the TWILIGHT sequel NEW MOON. The actress who turns 15 next month is in talks for the role of Jane, part of a deadly group of vampire killers. She is described as a petite blonde, who works with two sidekicks three times her size but it's her they are terrified of.

If she accepts, it would take the child star back to the realm of summer blockbuster, a place she was at after appearing in the high profile Steven Spielberg movie WAR OF THE WORLDS in 2005. She has since starred in mostly Indie drama's, building her reputation as the next Jodie Foster.

Director Chris Weitz begins shooting NEW MOON for Summit Entertainment in March with a view to a Nov. 20th 2009 release.

As we expected last week, Chris Weitz was officially announced over the weekend as the man to direct NEW MOON, the second movie in Stephenie Meyer's outrageously popular TWILIGHT franchise.

12 months ago, Weitz released the big budget fantasy epic THE GOLDEN COMPASS, a movie we shouldn't forget he wrote and directed which crippled New Line Cinema and made the studio who created NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and gave us the LORD OF THE RINGS franchise fold.

Which is not meant as a dig against Weitz. It's just I'm EXTREMELY surprised that...

A) He would take on another massive fan favourite franchise as his next picture. Another mis-hap here and you have to say his career is done.

B) That Summit Entertainment would actively pursue him for it.

Surely they could have hired a more assured hand? I was sure the gig would end up with Kathryn Bigelow (POINT BREAK, K:19 THE WIDOWMAKER) especially with the franchise being predominately aimed at females but instead it's the director of ABOUT A BOY and AMERICAN PIE. Not that those were bad movies, they just aren't films that you would immediately associate with a director who should be directing bid budget projects.

Chris Weitz said in a press ...

No disrespect meant to Chris Weitz, it's not my intention for this to become an attack article but I can't help but feel you blew your epic movie with THE GOLDEN COMPASS (which we wrote and directed) a film that killed New Line Cinema should we not forget and your heavily rumored attachment to the TWILIGHT franchise should have fans worried.

Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily who originally broke the solid news that director Catherine Hardwicke had been ditched from the vampire franchise, has come up with the scoop that Chris Weitz (ABOUT A BOY, AMERICAN PIE, THE GOLDEN COMPASS) is the studio favourite to replace her.

Summit Entertainment are expected to make him a formal offer and Finke claims there's a connection between Weitz and Summit's head Eric Feig, who are long time pals.

Weitz originally dropped out of THE GOLDEN COMPASS a few years back because he was worried that the scope of the production was too big for him and that he was worried about pissing off fans of the novel. He was convinced to return by New Line and then failed on the two accounts he thought he might. TWILIGHT fans be worried.

It's simple really. The TWILIGHT franchise having made $159 million worldwide (and it's yet to open in the U.K. yet) at the box office from a budget of $37 million, is now too big for Indie director Catherine Hardwicke to continue. She has laid the groundwork but the franchise requires someone with a blockbuster touch now.

Someone who could make this series the new HARRY POTTER.

Hardwicke will say it's due to timing (which could be true, NEW MOON will begin filming in March time and needs to be in theatres no latter than early 2010) but I think Summit Entertainment wants a bigger name and Hardwicke isn't all that comfortable with helming a big franchise...
"I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct 'New Moon,'" said Hardwicke. "Directing 'Twilight' has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel-- it is a great story."
Summit said in the same official press release...

Well the movie industry has shut down for Thanksgiving but there is no such holiday here in the U.K, making news stories very difficult to find this morning.

Which means today I have had to resort to a rumor. A really unfounded and likely to be false rumor. Moviehole have found a snippet in the Herald-Sun Newspaper claiming a new BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER movie is in the works. Hollywood are said to be interested in reviving the franchise after the success of TWILIGHT.

"The monster success of girly vampire pic Twilight at the US Box office last weekend could kick open the door for a big-screen return of Joss Whedon’s much-loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Rumours are circulating in Hollywood that Whedon has a feature-film script based on his hit TV series ready to roll as soon as a studio is prepared to commit. The Buffy concept was first unveiled as a movie in 1992 with long-forgotten Kristy Swanson in the title role."
Something tells me that if Joss Whedon had wrote or was writing a screenplay for a new BUFFY, he wouldn't have been able to keep his mouth shut. He would have told us by now.

Would love to see it. ...

The critic proof TWILIGHT made $70.5 million over it's debut weekend, substantially more than enough for Summit Entertainment to quickly send out a press release the next day saying a sequel had been greenlit, based on Stephenie Meyer's second book in the series NEW MOON.

The $70.5 million makes TWILIGHT the fourth biggest November release of all time, beating out QUANTUM OF SOLACE by $3 million. Coming Soon say audience research figures show that 55% of the viewers were under the age of 25 and women accounted for 2/3rd's of the audience.

I also wonder how many of the fangirls saw this movie twice. Box Office Mojo report that for the first time since Eminem's 8 MILE in 2002, the soundtrack for a No. 1 film also debuted at the top of the music charts, these fans are as rabid as any comic book geek.

As expected, the critics have come down pretty harsh on TWILIGHT. Not quite calling it unwatchable but falling more down on the negative than the positive side.

But this movie is critic proof at the end of the day. Stephenie Meyer's books have a huge legion of fans that will make this movie $60 million plus this weekend and eventually a billion dollar film franchise. Probably not HARRY POTTER but maybe as big as Buffy the Vampire Slayer come movie three.

Rotten Tomatoes scored it at 44% from 77 reviews, 43 of them negative.

IMDB give it 5.5 after 2,195 votes.

But both Harry Knowles and Roger Ebert, two critics I respect a great deal found it entertaining but not a patch on the Swedish horror LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, which our very own Ray DeRousse called the greatest vampire film of all time.

If you do see TWILIGHT, make sure you leave a comment as to how you found the movie. Sadly, as most of us are based in the U.K, it's gonna be a while before we can review it as it doesn't open for another month here.

TWILIGHT opens next Friday in the U.S. (18th Dec. U.K.) and if the insane riots during a guest appearance of one of star Robert Pattinson at an event this week in San Francisco is anything to go by, the movie is going to be huge.

And Summit Entertainment clearly think so to. The Hollywood Reporter say Melissa Rosenberg, the scribe of the first movie in the series has been hired to adapt the second (NEW MOON) and third (ECLIPSE) novel in Stephenie Meyer's franchise for the big screen.

The sensible thought is the second and third movie will be filmed back-to-back.

The fourth novel, the recent smash BREAKING DAWN does not yet have a writer though Summit Entertainment have bought the rights.

Summit Entertainment are taking advantage of Warner Bros. decision to move Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from it's November 21st 2008 release date to July next year, by shifting the first movie in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series of novels to that original date.

This is three weeks earlier than it's previously set release date, where it was originally to open against 20th Century Fox's remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still.

"With a giant franchise like 'Harry Potter' in the market, we had to stay clear of it," said Summit Entertainment co-chairman and CEO Rob Friedman. "Their move created an opportunity to bring the movie to fans three weeks earlier, who have continued to show their enthusiasm, from Comic-Con to the giant 'Breaking Dawn' book sales. We felt we had to take that opportunity."
Analysts are expecting Twilight to become a new popular film sensation as the Harry Potter franchise when the first movie in the similarly popular young adult series took off at the turn of the Millennium.

The $37 million adaptation of the first book directed by Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown helmer Catherine Hardwicke stars Kirsten Stewart as the teenage girl who risks everything when she falls in love ...

It has been interesting to watch the development of the upcoming film adaptation of the Twilight series of novels by Stephenie Meyer. As Matt accurately described in an earlier article about the teaser trailer, this series appears to be the next Harry Potter craze. Somehow, though, I managed to know nothing about the vast legions of fans of this series ... I suppose it's because I am not a sixteen year old girl.

Whatever. At least the kids are still reading books.

The first teaser trailer left with with a bit of the shrugs. To me, it looked like LOST BOYS 3: COREY HAIM IS A DRUG ADDICT. It definitely had a silly, teeny-bopper feel about it, and a remarkable lack of energy considering the pedigree. The first trailer definitely suffered from the lack of visuals, which could not have been far along at the time of production.

A new, longer teaser has surfaced, and some of the problems of the first one have been addressed. There is an urgency here sorely lacking in the initial offering, and the dramatic weight of the situation is given more heft. I still can't get past the dinky appearance of the film; is the whole thing ...

Boring as shit.

Based on an uber popular series by Stephenie Meyer (who I once got a tirade of abuse because I mis-spelt her first name), the upcoming fantasy/horror flick Twilight stars Kristen Stewart as a teenager who is drawn to the weird kid next door (Robert Pattinson) who just happens to be part of a family of vampires!

It's directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown).

The book is said to be great. Can't say the same for the trailer. YAWN!!!!!

Looks like a series that should air after The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Not sure which one has the better acting actually.

This one opens at Christmas and this trailer is presumably suppose to tease us. Do you feel suitably teased?
