The Blu-Ray release of TROPIC THUNDER on January 26th presents me with a monumental dilemma- should I watch my beloved Robert Downey Junior on rip-roaring form, or should I swerve away from it, thanks to the ominous presence of Ben Stiller and Jack Black.

Stiller continues to vex me. He is made of proper comedy stock- it should be in his genes- yet he still sees successful comic acting as a mix of flailing limbs and over-the-top aggression. What frustrates the most- and this rings true for Black as well- is that he was once good. Just as Black hit his comedic heights in HIGH FIDELITY, and to a lesser extent in SCHOOL OF ROCK, Stiller was excellent in THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, and the hilarious MTV Movie Award skit with Tom Cruise. But since then, something horrible has happened and both men seem to have forgotten the twin pillars of self-effacing subtlety or situation (let the comedy happen to you) and timing and gone instead with the painful “goofball” characterisations that don’t deserve DVD buyers’ attentions. Slap-stick is one thing, and intellectual idiocy, as mastered by Leslie Nielsen another, but the two should never be mixed: the key to ...

We may not have seen the last of foul mouthed film executive Les Grossman, the hideous but very humorous character Tom Cruise won a Golden Globe nomination this week for portraying in TROPIC THUNDER.

Cruise has told E! that he and pal Ben Stiller are looking for a way to reprise the character.
“I’ve talked about doing different videos with the character,” Cruise said. “I’ve started working with Ben [Stiller] on it, and we’ve kind of talked about different things to do. We were gonna do some in our free time, but we haven’t found the free time…yet.”
Online shorts I could do with but I'm not at all interested in seeing Tom Cruise take on this character for a full movie and drop himself to the depths of the Ben Stiller clang.

One would hope he had bigger fish to fry. And yes, I know I've said he should do a comedy for his next movie to win himself back into the hearts of the public but I'm not sure Grossman is the character to do it.

It seems easy to criticize Ben Stiller comedies as “dumb.” Crude humor, cheap visual gags, frequent parody, comic-book-like characterization and even some toilet humor. This isn’t Woody Allen. And yet, not only is this film funny, it nonetheless comes off as surprisingly clever.

While comedies with the aforementioned qualities frequently bring to mind second-rate Adam Sandler films, Tropic Thunder has the wit, intelligence and underlying incising sense of mockery that Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery had. That film today has been overshadowed and unfairly written off due to its increasingly uninspired and juvenile sequels, but the original was very clever and very funny, a witty send-up of 1960’s spy films with a lot of great characters and memorable gags. Tropic Thunder reminded me a lot of that film, and it also reminded me that “dumb comedies” can be tremendous fun when they are done with skill.

Tropic Thunder is a Ben Stiller movie through and through, with its broad humor, quirky, moronic, but strangely sympathetic characters, self-aware parody and clever hijacking of cliché. Unsurprising—not only is Stiller one of the stars of the film, he also produced, wrote and directed it. No doubt, the next comparison I make will be one ...

UPDATED: Here is the trailer in all it's bloody glory. You can see it HERE, it's U.S. restricted but the zip code 27605 will work just fine for ya.Now don't you dare go and tell me that this movie hasn't won you over yet. Funny as shit. And best of all - this movie should inspire Quentin Tarantino to finish his damn WW-II ensemble screenplay!

END OF UPDATE
I've just been informed that a blood and guts, red-band trailer for Tropic Thunder will be going live at 6pm tonight in the U.K. over at the movie's official website.

The trailer will never be shown in theatres and is restricted to the Internet only.

Remember, 6pm HERE.

To see Robert Downey Jr - do this kind of role soon after becoming a REAL movie star with Iron Man - is just going to be one hell of a fascinating performance. It may well over-shadow the film but hey, when has that never happened with Rob before!

Variety say that a trailer titled Satan's Alley will mark Tobey Maguire's cameo in the upcoming comedy Tropic Thunder. In Grindhouse style, it's a fake trailer that will depict a non-existing movie and will actually co-star Robert Downey Jr.

At this point it's unclear as to whether the trailer will play before prints of Tropic Thunder or during the movie... my guess would be during as the film revolves around several of the most outrageous fictional Hollywood actors who are brought together to film an ensemble war movie under the direction of Steve Coogan. So these trailers will probably play as Coogan is picking his cast - as the REAL trailer for the film suggested.

You will notice in said trailer for Tropic Thunder there was a moment when Ben Stiller delivers the line "Who left the fridge open?" in Hot Fuzz style dialogue and holding two massive guns on each hand.

This could also have been from a similar fake trailer.

However the trades do mention something really interesting. They say that the Fox Searchlight logo played before the trailers... which is strange because Tropic Thunder is made by a collaboration of Dreamworks and Paramount and would suggest that they would play ...

Robert Downey Jr. often gets a lot of stick and criticism from people who believe that time and time again he basically plays himself on screen. Even with his terrific performances in movies like Zodiac and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (and surely from the looks of it Iron Man) you never really feel like he gets the credit he probably deserves.

It's a criticism that probably has some worthy grounds (hell, I think I've leveled it a few times, A Scanner Darkly comes to mind) but there ain't' gonna be one person out there who will level it towards him for his role in Tropic Thunder.

If you don't like anything else about this trailer, your damn sure gonna be taken away by every moment he is on screen...

See Robert Downey Jr. as a black guy in HD HERE.
Kudos to director Ben Stiller too for keeping the cameo's from the likes of Tom Cruise and Matthew McConaughey absent from the trailer. A brief appearance would almost certainly have added more bucks to the taking but for the enjoyment of the movie it's much better when we don't know how they are going to show up.

Wow, the first time I saw the image of Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming comedy Tropic Thunder, I didn't even realise it was him and nor did I think twice about the guy in the photo being a black man.

So I'm about to post it on this site when I stumble across Cinema Blend's post on the image and low and behold - I see it's him. And surprisingly, unbelievably... it's extremely convincing at first glance.

In the movie Robert Downey Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, a serious Oscar-winning actor who is cast in the most expensive Vietnam War movie ever (described as the modern day equivalent of Apocalypse Now), however a panic occurs when he realises the character he plays was originally written as black. So he dyes his skin, presumably with the mentality of a method actor like Daniel Day Lewis or Christian Bale.

A hell of a risky move from director and star Ben Stiller and for Paramount to push with it and give it the greenlight.

To be fair, it looks ok in still motion but when it comes to the big dance and we see it on film it could be extremely offensive. Props to Robert Downey though, ...

I wonder just how much Tom Cruise is getting paid for his cameo in the Ben Stiller directed comedy TROPIC THUNDER...

In the movie he will play an fat and bald studio mogul.

The film follows a group of actors who travel to shoot a B-Movie war picture where the actors themselves are actually forced to become the soldiers they are portraying.

Don't ask me how that even makes sense, but that's the plot that we keep hearing. There's some funny guys in this let me remind you, so maybe it has a chance of being humorous..

Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black, Steve Coogan, Nick Nolte and many cameo's with rumors suggesting Katie Holmes, Matthew McConaughey and Tobey Maguire along with the confirmed Cruise-meister pictured above.

The last time Cruise cameoed in a movie was AUSTIN POWERS: GOLDMEMBER. No details of how much he earned for that cameo but I'm thinking it was probably a tidy sum...

Although the role is said to be nothing more than a short cameo, Ben Stiller has decided to re-cast the Owen Wilson part of his new movie Tropic Thunder after the actor had to pull out due to his recent personal problems. His replacement will be Matthew McConaughey, who kinda looks a little like Wilson I guess... just better looking.

The Dreamworks comedy stars Stiller along with Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr, Nick Nolte, Bill Hader and Steve Coogan and is about a group of actors who fly off to a remote island to shoot a big-budget war movie where unfortunately for them they are forced to actually become the soldiers they are portraying.

I've always quite liked the idea of the movie personally and I'm glad the actors Stiller went for aren't from the frat pack. There's no Vince Vaughn or Will Ferrell, it's just talented actors and those that can be hilariously funny but in a different and more sophisticated way. If you get what I'm saying.

Tropic Thunder is Stiller's fourth directorial effort after Reality Bites, The Cable Guy and Zoolander and will be in a screen near you on July 11th 2008.

Owen Wilson has understandably pulled out of the comedy movie Tropic Thunder which he was set to begin working on in just a few weeks time. The movie which is directed by his good pal Ben Stiller is already around six weeks into shooting but Wilson was not scheduled to film his part for another couple of weeks says Variety.

The movie which also stars Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr, Bill Hader and more revolves around a group of actors shooting a big-budget war picture are forced to actually become the actors they are portraying.

The movie was set to be the 9th feature film the duo had worked together on but the decision for Wilson to pull out seems to be amicable one and in truth, the only thing that could happen with Wilson's health. There's no word on whether his role in the movie will be re-cast or simply just written out of the comedy as it reportedly wasn't that huge a role.

Wilson is still recovering at a medical center in Los Angeles.

I hate Owen Wilson as an actor. I hate the characters he plays (well the one character he repeats for every role) and I always hate the movies he appears in. I think it's his whiny voice and his comedy routine which is ten years past it's sell by date.

I was watching The Matrix a couple of weeks back. You all remember that seen when Hugo Weaving is interrogating Laurence Fishburne and Weaving is telling him how much the The Matrix is driving him insane? Well that's what Owen Wilson does to me, and the idea of having to see him in a movie gives me a horrible cold feeling.

Variety are reporting that Ben Stiller has cast Owen Wilson in his comedy movie Tropic Thunder. This will be the 8th time the pair have worked together for a movie.
The Ben Stiller-directed DreamWorks comedy is about a group of actors who go on location to shoot a war movie, only to find that reality replicates their plot.
Also cast is veteran actor Nick Nolte who joins the previously cast Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Steve Coogan, Matt Levin and more including Ben Stiller himself in what has been described as ...

In the film, everything goes wrong during the making of a big-budget war movie, and the actors end up becoming the commandos they are playing. Downey will play Kirk Lazarus, the greatest actor of his generation and a four-time Oscar winner.

Jay Baruchel has also signed on the flick. Justin Theroux who co-wrote the script of the movie with Stiller and Idiocracy scribe Etan Cohen has been attached to star in the film from day one.

No doubt this will be as dumb as the usual Ben Stiller flick but well at least Downey Jr. will be worth watching.
