Despite the lapses in time/space science, I have always enjoyed the TERMINATOR series. To this point, it's been a muscular, man-style series, full of spectacular action set pieces, lioness-like heroines, and cynical brutality.

The first in the series, 1984's THE TERMINATOR, introduced the world to director JAMES CAMERON'S high-octane, lushly-photographed directorial style. It also propelled star ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER into the stratosphere with this, his first iconic performance as the killer robot from the future. Sadly, the film doesn't hold up as well as the others in the series, thanks to a decidely eighties look and sound, and also featuring some horrible stop-motion compositing that nearly ruins the brilliant designs of STAN WINSTON. Still, the catchphrases work, and the MICHAEL BIEHN/LINDA HAMILTON chemistry is perfect. And there are loads of "whoa" action moments.

Cameron returned to the series in 1991's TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY, inarguably the best in the series. Although the film has dated a bit, one is left to marvel at the astounding stunts and action sequences on display throughout. Even better is Hamilton, who bulked up in her return as the tough heroine, while Cameron shades the characters with depth and resonance. Arnold's Terminator is a hero this time around, ...

Much, much better. After the low on sugar first teaser trailer for Alexandra Aja's upcoming horror Mirrors, comes a much improved restricted red band trailer which actually is pretty successful at creating atmosphere and tension.

The remake of the 2003 Korean horror of the same name opens August 15th (October in the U.K.) Taking a break from 24, the always likeable Kiefer Sutherland plays (rather unsuprisingly) a troubled ex-cop who must save his family from an unspeakable evil that is using mirrors as a gateway into their home.

Spoilers much? The fate of one character who I presume will have a decent sized part because she is a well known actress is totally just given away in the trailer.

The house with lots of mirrors/glass reminds me of the tepid Thirteen Ghosts remake and I think Aja is certainly trying to keep the colour scheme and tone of a J-Horror. I still don't think the movie looks to add anything new to the genre but it now looks like a film where you might find yourself getting lost in, rather than one that will bore you for 2 hours.

So I'm watching the trailer for Paul W.S. Anderson's latest cinematic achievement and I'm pleasantly surprised as The Bourne Ultimatum's talented Joan Allen gives her usual great line delivery. Surely an actress like her who never takes the paycheck role may actually have signed up to a worthwhile project?

Well very quickly my sense came back to my head. The movie looks all kinds of crap.

Gone is the goofiness, the camp, the whole basic concept of the original (which was neither a race, nor a battle against other cars... it was basically like Grand Theft Auto, you gain points for the amount of people you kill and damage you cause) and in it's place is a Mad Max colour scheme video game that is going to be a yawn fest I'm sure.

I'm going to have a hard time sitting through this one...

SEE THE TRAILER IN HD HERE

Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson, Ian McShane, Joan Allen and Robin Shou make up the core cast. The movie opens in September.

It's a remake of a 2003 Korean horror, updated to the Western audience by talented French helmer Alexandre Aja and a rare big screen performance these days from Kiefer Sutherland.

Here he plays a troubled ex-cop who must save his family from an unspeakable evil that is using mirrors as a gateway into their home.

Well, sadly they weren't able to recapture the slow building atmospheric mood they had built up from the behind the scenes footage released a few weeks back.
In fact, they have taken a general chemistry that worked quite way (Sutherland in a haunted house of mirrors by himself) and left it pretty much out of this cookie cutter Hollywood-idized footage.
And clearly when your biggest asset here is the talent of Kiefer Sutherland, don't make him play second fiddle in the trailer.
Mirrors opens August 15th.

Ben Kingsley is a great leading actor and I'm so happy to see him topline the upcoming drama Elegy, based on Phillip Roth's novel The Dying Animal. Kingsley is so much more than the guy who cameo's in The Love Guru or even the upcoming Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

Here he plays a 60+ teacher who late in life finds a real connection with a beautiful women who just happens to be a young student (Cruz) he teaches.

Could it be love?

Dennis Hopper (as his advising friend), Patricia Clarkson (as the woman he has been seeing closer to his age) and Peter Sarsgaard co-star.

It's nothing we haven't seen from Cruz before where she is the object of a man falling deeply in love with her free spirit but it's Kingsley who makes this guy a real character that we can get invested in and not some old pervert.

See it in quality HD HERE
The film gets a theatrical run from August 8th in both the U.K. and U.S. Isabel Coixet (My Life Without Me) directed it.

Still suffers greatly from Fight Club comparisons and I hope they keep a voice-over narration and talking into the camera at a minimum but the trailer for the second adaptation of a Chuck Palahinuk novel looks great, largely done to it's off-beat vulgarity and twisted humor which fits lead Sam Rockwell down to the ground.

Maybe feels a little Sundance-like, a little Indie cult knowing - but fuck it I'm there. This is kinda shit is right up my alley...

Why not CHOKE on the HD trailer HERE!
Actor Clark Gregg makes his directorial debut here with the film due out late September. Angelica Huston, Kelly MacDonald and Brad William Henke co-star.
