UPDATE:

Just as this was to ready to post, news has flitered through from Bloody Disgusting that Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers, Doomsday) is in talks to direct Rodriguez's script for Predators at 20th Century Fox.

The movie is on the fast track looking for a July 2010 release.
If you hang around nerd circles these days, you might have heard rumors that a remake or sequel to Predator is in the works, and that a prequel to Alien is also in development. If you hang around nerd circles, you’ve probably also already encountered some debate between those who want to hang the money-hungry producers for trying to financially and artistically rape the two franchises and those who just can’t help but be curious about either of the two projects in the off chance that a deft hand at directing causes them to be watchable. But do any of these projects have any chance at existing, firstly, and then secondly, surviving?

Let’s just go over what we are dealing with here. The Alien project, though first rumored to be a remake, is apparently now a prequel film about the origins of the creature. The Predator project was first rumored to be a remake ...

Status: Un Certain Regard

It would be easy to start this review with something about Mariah Carey and Glitter, and that film's infinitely rotten centre being a bad omen for Lee Daniel's adaptation of Sapphire's novel Push. But I'm far more grown up than that, and besides I hate lazy journalism, so I'll stick to analysing the film on its own merits.

I have to say I wasnt really that aware of Precious (or Push as I believe it may be called Stateside) coming into the festival, and stumbled across an article about it in one of the festival dialies that Im becoming increasingly burdened by, which convinced me it was essential viewing. I had heard some buzz- considerable praise in the shape of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, but still the project never seemed to light a torch for me. A quick thumb through the official programme told me everything I needed to know- an illiterate adolescent from a despicably abusive home seeks affirmation and progress at an "alternative school" in Harlem. How the twin musical talents of Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz would fit into the tale remained to be confirmed, but the project suggested enough grit and soul initially ...

Release Date: 16th March 2009

First off, an admittance- THE DUCHESS is not strictly what Id call my type of film- not as an expression of my innate chauvinism I hasten to add- but my commitment to the medium and my vociferous intention to watch EVERY film in existence overrule even the most determined of resolutions. Besides, it has Ralph Fiennes in it and that more than makes up for the presence of the arse-inflating dresses and frankly monumental hair that goes hand in hand with period drama.

The best thing I can say about THE DUCHESS is that it manages to offer something new to the period drama genre- the muted palette is somewhat atypical, evoking far more grit, and probably symptomatic of director Saul Dibb’s darker early career (BULLET BOY and TV documentary EASY MONEY were hardly Disney-like).

Nor does THE DUCHESS flounder in antiquated ideologies too much: although the setting and the sensibilities are historical, the themes of romantic intrigue, celebrity and the struggle for personal freedom and expression are timeless. There is also of course an underlying current of female empowerment- the exchanges between Bess and Georgiana regarding sex for pleasure; Georgiana’s reluctance to accept men as her intellectual ...

Okay, so everyone and their slightly deranged murderous mother has done one of these lists, but I don’t care, I’m very opinionated and my view is clearly needed here…

10. Spear to the Groin
FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER (1984)

Victim: Paul (Clyde Hayes)

Possibly the most eye-watering of all the deaths of the franchise. Two questions immediately spring to mind: why in the balls, man? And why did he have to hoist him up as well? Jesus, you’d think Jason was some kind of psychotic kill... oh. Right. The ultimate expression of Jason’s murderous rage as a product of the sexual promiscuousness of his victims’ generation.

9. Leather Tourniquet to the Face
FRIDAY THE 13TH V: A NEW BEGINNING (1985)

Victim: Eddie (John Robert Dixon)

Originally this scene was far more gruesome (like this is much more subtle!), with oodles more brainy bits spurting everywhere; but in fear of the dreaded X-Rating, chiefs pulled the plug and aired this slightly less grim version. I say less grim, the moronic stud gets his head crushed against a tree with a leather strap. Unpleasant. Man-whore gets head squished- another advertisement for keeping it in your pants.

8. Liquid Nitrogen Facial
JASON X (2001)

Victim: Adrienne (Kristi Angus)

Possibly one of the more ...

The most unfortunate irony of all ironies is that no less than 30 minutes ago I was watching Ocean's Thirteen for the second time, just marveling at what a wonderful cast of faces and personalities Stephen Soderbergh had managed to put together for his trilogy.

And then I come home and I have to report on this news which has come to a shock to me, a real, real shock.

BBC report that actor/comedian and all round likeable on screen personality Bernie Mac has died aged 50. It's said he was hospitalized last week for Pneumonia and sadly it proved to be fatal earlier today.

Born in 1957 as Bernard Jeffrey McCullough in Chicago, Illinois - Mac was brought up in relative poverty, a popular notion (which is attributed to his uncle) is that he once lived in a two bedroom apartment with nine other people.

His childhood inspiration was comedian Bill Cosby and with such a great icon to look up to, it only took him to the age of 20 before he was a regular at Chicago's Cotton Club even if the money was enough to keep him living. He worked as a janitor, furniture mover, appliance hauler, and delivery man so ...

Quentin Tarantino/Universal/Weinsteins have finally secured their A-list star. Brad Pitt has signed on to the World War II drama Inglorious Bastards, spearheading a project that might not have as many well known movie stars present as we previously thought.

Variety say British comedian and good friend of Tarantino, Simon Pegg has also surprisingly joined the cast as a British lieutenant. Pegg is making a career out of "it's not what you know but who you know".

It would also appear that Tarantino has cast his first "career resurrection" role as former German star Nastassja Kinski who led the 80's remake of Cat People and has been very quiet for a decade or more has also joined Inglorious Bastards as a German movie star queen.

Not finished yet. The trade also say relatively unknown actor David Krumholtz, a regular on the t.v. show Numbers is cast as an American solider.

A few more details about the project are starting to leak. Variety say most of the dialogue is in German or French with subtitles helping out the English speaking audience. Only the English actors will speak English.
So the eight (or nine because the trade's don't make it clear if that involves Pitt) Jewish-American soldiers that ...

You know a movie is connecting with people when all anybody outside of the online sphere wants to talk to you about is The Dark Knight. It happens to me now and again, especially at the time of a big released movie... Indiana Jones was the same.

But this one is off the charts. Anticipation in the U.K. could not be higher for the Batman Begins sequel. I quite frankly don't think any single person in the country who does not see the film on it's several weeks of release can have any worthy excuse.

If not this movie, which will actually get you off your ass and into the theatre?

To celebrate the release of The Dark Knight, we have one awesome competition for you. We are giving away FIVE of these beauties as first prize, usually priced at £15.98 at Amazon...

If you have seen the HD-DVD transfer of Batman Begins, you will know just how insane this movie is at 1080p, it's incredible. It's titles like this which you buy into the HD format for.
I've spent this glorious Saturday morning watching my review copy as soon as it came through the post, I literally hit the postman with my Batarang and ...
