There's talk of a Third Man remake. It's an ugly story that rears it's head every now and again.

CHUD say that genuine real life friends Tobey Maguire (as the cleaner than a whistle, kinder dumb but morally righteous, hack writer Holly Martins) and Leonardo DiCaprio (as the sadistic, charming and utterly insane Harry Lime) are to front-line a remake of the 1949 Carol Reed directed film noir classic from a script not yet written by Eastern Promises scribe Steven Knight.

They expect a trade announcement in the next two weeks. Hmmm, I have my doubts.
Harry Lime (Welles) reveals his sadistic scheme
to a shocked long time friend Holly Martins
(Cotton), in the most famous scene of The Third Man (1949).

I have doubts because of the talent involved. DiCaprio has always been a smart guy who has hunted down smart projects. He has never looked to go down the remake wagon and although he's not afraid to adapt big properties at his own studio (The Twilight Zone comes to mind), he's also someone who respects film history. He wouldn't remake North by Northwest but he would star in movie that pays homage to it with Catch Me If You Can.

Maguire is too much of ...

James Vanderbilt, the screenwriter of Zodiac and the guy who penned the first draft of Spider-Man 4 which begins production early Spring for a May 2011 release, has been "quietly" hired by Sony to pen the fifth and sixth installment in the web-slinging superhero series, say Variety.

Which is an interesting move as Sam Raimi wasn't 100% keen on his original script and two new scribes, David Lindsay-Abaire and Tobey Maguire's writer/director friend Gary Ross was brought on to make it more to the director's liking.

Just another sign that Sony are planning for life after Raimi perhaps - who surely will be done after 4 when he has the massive World of Warcraft series waiting in the wings for him.

My personal opinion is Vanderbilt's hiring for the fifth and sixth movie (which is likely to be similar to Kill Bill 1 and 2 in terms of really being one over-sized movie), is so it can get under way quickly whilst Tobey Maguire (currently hired to 5) and Kirsten Dunst (only attached currently to the fourth) will still be a reasonable age.

In terms of who the villains could be... I'm desperate to see Kraven's Last Hunt adapted for screen, and The Lizard was ...

New writers being hired for big budget movies in Hollywood are nothing new, in fact it's the expected working practice. It's actually a rarity that a screenplay gets crafted by one single writer all the way through it's production, especially in regards to comic book movies.

Which is why you shouldn't panic to hear that SPIDER-MAN 4 has got a new writer to replace James Vanderbilt (ZODIAC). Only after the fourth or fifth new writer (i.e. HANCOCK) has jumped on board, should we then start to panic...

The Hollywood Reporter say Pulitzer winning Playwright (for his 2007 play Rabbit Hole) David Lindsay-Abaire is now in charge of writing duties. He is known for his character driven plays and characters living on the outskirts of society (perfect!) and has credit on the animated movie ROBOTS and the upcoming INKHEART.

The hiring mirrors the kind of writer they used earlier in the series when dramatic screenwriter Alvin Sargent and Pulitzer prize winning author Michael Chabon wrote SPIDEY 2 and churned out the best film of the series.

The trades once again say Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will all return.

Nikki Finke at her Deadline Hollywood Daily blog claims that Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi have both signed on to return for another Spider-Man movie, despite claims that both were ready to quit the successful and profitable franchise.

She also claims that previous reports of Spider-Man 4 and 5 being shot back-to-back are absolutely correct.

Kirsten Dunst has yet to agree on a return, though Finke believes the Mary Jane Watson character won't be re-cast if she declines the offer. Presumably the storyline involving Gwen Stacy will be progressed in the two movies, with or without Mary Jane.

Earlier this year, Zodiac scribe James Vanderbilt handed in the script for Spider-Man 4 which Finke believes will begin production next fall for a May 2011 release.

She also hints that Dr. Curt Connors will transform into The Lizard and will be the main villain of the next film, something that I think everyone agrees is the logical choice for the next film.

Universal Pictures have attached Tobey Maguire to star in The Crusaders, a movie about the landmark 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education Case that declared state laws which had established separate public schools for black and white children, had denied black children equal educational opportunities.
The unanimous decision from the court was "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal."

Maguire will play Jack Greenberg, an idealistic lawyer fresh out of law school who spearheaded the victory against segregation in American schools. The movie is based on his memoirs Crusaders in the Court.

Gary Ross will direct, having previously worked with Maguire in his two most famous non-Spidey movies, Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. Former Buffy the Vampire slayer actor and Recount scribe Danny Strong will scribe - he is also an alumni actor from Ross' previous films.

Important story and historical moment in U.S. history, well worthy of it's translation to screen even if it will be a dialogue heavy courtroom drama. Can Maguire really pull this kind of material off, a "Tom Cruise" style performance in A Few Good Men?

Ross sure has great faith in him, I can't say I'm fully convinced.

If this news is true, then we can expect some big movement on the Spider-Man franchise at the end of 2008/beginning of 2009.

Laura Zisken, the producer of the Spidey movies at Columbia/Sony has told theatre owners in California and Nevada that a fourth movie in the series is hoped to be released in May 2011.

She also confirms that James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) has yet to turn his script in, the part of the proccess that will be vital in keeping both director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. If the script is below par or is disagerable with them, then that's it for those three... they no longer have any committments with the franchise.

The Spider-Man series has made over $2.5 billion worldwide and is the most success modern day cinematic franchise. With or without those trio, Spider-Man will be continuing for a very long time indeed. It is the new James Bond franchise of films.

We are a day slow on this one but nevermind. CHUD yesterday reported the exclusive news that Lawrence Kasdan, the famed writer of two of my favourite geek films of all time Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back - is currently drafting the script for Robotech.

The movie adapted from the popular anime series, was picked up by Warner Bros. in October with Tobey Maguire one of the producers with the possible intention of headlining as an actor.

The project was described last year as this...
A sprawling sci-fi epic, “Robotech” takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship’s energy source known as “protoculture,” and the planet’s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.
Ok, so since the original Star Wars and Indy Jones days, Kasdan has suffered a few mis-fires. Dreamcatcher (which was seriously one of my most disappointing movies of 2003) being the most ...

If I were the head of Columbia/Sony/Marvel, then I would make damn sure that Spider-Man 4 and 5 were shot back to back as rumored and that whatever it takes, Tobey Maguire is convinced to return because there's two summer tentpoles still to be squeezed out of him before he passes that point of no return to play the young Peter Parker.

After that, do what you want. Re-cast - move on, whatever.

But for now let's have an epic Spidey two-arc movie which sends off Maguire and director Sam Raimi the right way because Spider-Man 3 certainly wasn't it.

HOWEVER, I'm all for back-up plans. And the word from Latino Review (who are 8 out of 10 times SPOT ON with their scoops) is that two actors are being considered to replace Maguire should he not wish to return. And after all it doesn't take a genius to realise that the Spider-Man films will go on and on and on just like the Bond series with new actors replacing old ones, as long as they keep making money.

First up is Patrick Fugit. You may remember him as the young guy who lead Almost Famous - and since then he's been little seen ...

Spider-Man 3 wasn't so far terrible that the series involving our web slinging superhero is not unsalvagable just yet and if today's news scoop from Cinematical is anything to go by then it's early signs that Sony/Columbia have learnt from their mistakes.

After over-indulging at least two or maybe three films worth of story and plot in the last Spidey flick, the new series screenwriter James Vanderbilit (Zodiac, Basic) has wisely last week turned in a two film storyline arc to the studio for Spider-Man 4 which can be shot back to back with Spider-Man 5. It's a move that has no doubt delighted Sony and Columbia because of course it means one extra movie and twice the cash for the small work of shooting back to back.

And when Spider-Man 3 made $890 million worldwide - you are talking about a move which will eventually see you earn nearly another $1 billion.

There's of course another big factor which is beneficial by this move. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst aren't getting any younger, Peter Parker is not quite like Bruce Wayne... there's only so long that Maguire can go around convincing us he's still a young man. Shooting these films back to ...

Variety say that a trailer titled Satan's Alley will mark Tobey Maguire's cameo in the upcoming comedy Tropic Thunder. In Grindhouse style, it's a fake trailer that will depict a non-existing movie and will actually co-star Robert Downey Jr.

At this point it's unclear as to whether the trailer will play before prints of Tropic Thunder or during the movie... my guess would be during as the film revolves around several of the most outrageous fictional Hollywood actors who are brought together to film an ensemble war movie under the direction of Steve Coogan. So these trailers will probably play as Coogan is picking his cast - as the REAL trailer for the film suggested.

You will notice in said trailer for Tropic Thunder there was a moment when Ben Stiller delivers the line "Who left the fridge open?" in Hot Fuzz style dialogue and holding two massive guns on each hand.

This could also have been from a similar fake trailer.

However the trades do mention something really interesting. They say that the Fox Searchlight logo played before the trailers... which is strange because Tropic Thunder is made by a collaboration of Dreamworks and Paramount and would suggest that they would play ...

It's the third new project in two weeks for Tobey Maguire though I very much doubt he will star in this one!
Variety say the Spider-Man actor and his production company Maguire Entertainment have struck a deal with Warner Independent to turn an upcoming book titled Marry Him! The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough into a feature film.

The non-fiction story from author and NPR commentator Lori Gottlieb dealing with her own experiences of giving birth and raising on her own a baby conceived from a sperm donation takes a negative view on holding out for Mr. Right (because she claims he isn't likely to exist). Her article on the subject originated in the March edition of Atlantic Monthly where it caught the eye of not WIP who agreed to finance Gottlieb's own adaptation for a book and now this film.

You can read the 5,000 word odd article HERE.

Tobey Maguire has found his second new project in just over a week.

10 days ago he attached himself to the comic book adaptation of Afterburn and today comes word from Variety of a new thriller in the vein of David Fincher's brilliant The Game.

The film is Hungry Rabbit Jumps and is setup at Endgame Entertainment. The script comes from David Tennan (Even Money) and the plot is currently unknown.

And although it's far from definite, Maguire now has four projects on his schedule (not including the two roles he has just completed in Tropic Thunder & Brothers) and none of them have Spider-Man in the title. Sign of his future?

Guess we will have to wait and see.

Tobey Maguire and Neal Mortiz are teaming up with Relativity Media to produce Afterburn, an adaptation of a comic book published by Red 5 Comics and created by Paul Ens (co-founder of TheForce.net).

The first issue hit the stands in January and it's a sci-fi adventure set against the backdrop of a postapocalyptic Earth...

Set against the backdrop of a postapocalyptic Earth, whose Eastern Hemisphere was destroyed by a massive solar flare, leaving what life remains mutated from radiation and fallout. The story revolves around a group of treasure hunters who for the right price extract such objects as the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone and the Crown Jewels while facing rival hunters, mutants and pirates along the way.
No writer is attached as of yet and it's unknown whether Maguire would be interested in starring in the movie too. Clearly from the poster, there is at least one male lead and actually the female character looks an awful lot like Eva Green.

Can you believe Tobey Maguire has only done two non-Spidey movies since his first outing as the webslinger seven years ago?

That's all set to change though in the future as he has Brothers (a love triangle set in war time which ...

Tobey Maguire has hinted that his role as Peter Parker in next May's Spider-Man 3 might be his last appearance in the Marvel comics franchise. The following quote isn't all that suprising as we have known from day one that the cast and director Sam Raimi were all signed up for only three movies....

"This might be a good place to stop - I am not tied contractually to any more Spider-Man movies. I am not completely closed to the idea of another one if it made sense but I would say the odds were in favor of this being the last one."

I really get a feeling of "the end of the road" attached to Spider-Man 3. Not in terms of story per say (there is still many stories left untapped, IMO this franchise could go on for years) but in the case of the "Maguire and Dunst" trilogy. My guess would be that this may very well be the last Spidey movie for at least one of those talents and certainly the last film for our webbed hero this decade.

Is Maguire expendable for the franchise? Who would replace him? I've said for a while that Topher Grace was the perfect ...
