Paramount not interested in Mark Wahlberg for G.I. JOE, have instead gone right out and tapped up the actor for a future Peter Berg project based on the life of drug dealer Jon Roberts. His rise and fall was chronicled in the brilliant 2006 documentary COCAINE COWBOYS of which the film will take much from.

The studio now own the film rights to Roberts life and once the WGA strike is over, a writer will be hired to take on this tale.

Roberts was a decorated soldier when he returned from Vietnam and soon moved over to Miami in the late 70's and found himself in-tangled in a relationship with a Medellin drug cartel. He became a huge distributor of billions of dollars worth of cocaine and became such a big figure that he could bribe the Miami PD to shut down causeways, so in GRAND THEFT AUTO style - he could race cars.

Wahlberg is right at the top of the Hollywood ladder at the moment, constantly finding himself with the lead role in a whole host of projects. He's currently filming THE LOVELY BONES for Peter Jackson having just filmed M.Night Shyamalan apocalyptic horror THE HAPPENING and Darren Aronofsky's delayed THE ...

2007 saw Timothy Olyphant mis-cast in two action vehicles (HITMAN, DIE HARD 4), two parts his career might have a hard time over-coming in the near-future. They were both bland, both without life and character, totally different from the charismatic performer I saw in SCREAM 2.

Variety say that Olyphant will star in A PERFECT GETAWAY, a new action thriller from the mind of David Twohy which centers on a newlywed couple who stumble across two strange hitchhikers. Presumably Olyphant will play one of the hitchhiker villains on the run from a bank robbery or murder (the trade don't reveal that aspect of the plot but I'm just going off the title).

Twohy has written and will direct the movie for Relativity Media/MGM. He was the guy who came up with the story for the spectacular Harrison Ford/Tommy Lee Jones chase movie THE FUGITIVE (and also WATERWORLD but we won't mention that) and would later go on to write and direct PITCH BLACK, THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK and BELOW.

He's known for big explosions and ultra fast thrilling narratives. This could be good if it stays away from the cliches of the now twice filmed THE HITCHER and if it goes more for ...

Jared Leto gained over 65 pounds from simply eating chocolate ice cream non stop in preparation for his role as John Lennon's killer Mark Chapman, in the upcoming movie chronicling his descent into madness in the three days before committing the cold-blooded murder.

He looks to have put in some amazing work on this movie, titled CHAPTER 27... so called because Chapman held a copy of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE when he killed Lennon, a book that Chapman modelled his life on and that ran only 26 chapters.

The movie played at the Sundance Film Festival last year and was not well received at all, with debut writer/director J.P. Schafer criticised for making a vanity project. The film failed to find a U.S. distributor at first and went straight to DVD in most countries but it's now been confirmed it will get a run in theatres in the U.S. this March after all.

Lindsay Lohan co-stars as Jude, and in the most bizarre coincidence the person playing Lennon in the movie is called Mark Chapman.

I think this movie looks really strong and Leto looks amazing...

Ok, I'm confused.

Variety are reporting that Charlize Theron has signed up for a role in John Hillcoat's adaptation of the brilliant Cormac McCarthy novel THE ROAD.

Ok that's cool. We like Charlize around here but the strange thing is the trades are still reporting that Viggo Mortensen is in the film... which he was right up until October when it was reported that Guy Pearce had secured the lead role when the LORD OF THE RINGS actor had turned them down.

But hey, I'm happy that Viggo is back. He's an acting Picasso, a true artist and I will flock to see anything he is in.

Theron's small role will be that of wife to Mortensen and will only be seen in flashbacks (it's a post-apocalyptic world, so think I AM LEGEND) and the actress says she isn't doing it for the part per-say, but because she is a massive fan of the book.

Said book, written by NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN author Cormac McCarthy depicts a guy who takes the nightmare road trip to get his son to safety whilst feeding off cannibals after a nuclear explosion. John Hillcoat is helming (he did the wonderful Western THE PROPOSITION) and is working from ...

Film is released on January 18th, 2008.

Review by Michael Edwards

[rating: 5]

Oh yes, it's time, week of release and I am finally allowed to contribute my meagre opinions to the hysteria! The names involved with this huge release bring with them a host of accolades, it's directed by the Academy Award winning Coen Brothers, based on a novel by Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Cormac McCarthy, and featuring Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones, and Academy Award nominee Javier Bardem as well as household names Kelly MacDonald and Josh Brolin. Such a hyped billing screams potential disappointment, but I'm not listening. This film was absolutely superb!

No Country for Old Men in a far darker affair than the Coen brothers are used to tackling, but it is not approached with any degree of caution, they attack the richly layered but tough to recreate work of McCarthy with all of the confidence you'd expect of these superlative siblings. The film opens with a quietly intense hunting scene with Llewelyn Moss (Josh ...

I've heard nothing but terrible things about the script and the whole production of RIGHTEOUS KILL, the movie that will see the legendary pairing of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino on screen together for the whole running time of a movie for the first ever time ever.
Their previous cinematic meetings occurred in THE GODFATHER: PART II (but never in the same scene, which started a long time interest in seeing them square off when both men's careers took off) and then in one scene in Michael Mann's HEAT.

But of course there is that elephant in the room. God damn 50 Cent...

50 Cent really is the only elephant though because I'm quite happy to talk about the rest of the cast which have come together pretty strongly. Carla Gugino, Brian Dennehy, Donnie Wahlberg, John Leguizamo and Dan Futterman.

Jon Avnet (88 MINUTES, FRIED GREEN TOMATOES) directed the movie from a script by INSIDE MAN scribe Russell Gerwitz.

The plot (as if it needs one, it's De Niro and Pacino!) sees the duo as top cops who attempt to take down a vigilante who might be one of their own. The movie opens in April and you can see the previously released trailer ...

I actually have a chance to THE BANK JOB in a couple of weeks time but sadly the screening falls on the same day as an already booked trip to see that much hyped LORD OF THE RINGS musical in London so I have to pass on it.

Shame, because I think this movie looks like fun.

Jason Statham stars as Terry, one of the bank robbers of the legendary ‘Baker Street heist of 1971' where robbers stole over 3 million pounds worth of cash and jewellery but weren’t so easily arrested when police found them in possession of comprising ’sex scandal’ photo’s of Princess Margaret.

Love the poster, reminds me of a 70's Steve McQueen movie. Like THE GETAWAY.

From the director of THE WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN and THE RECRUIT... THE BANK JOB opens on 29th February (U.K.) and one week later in the U.S. You can see the previously released trailer HERE.

His role in the new TERMINATOR movie aside (which I think might be a fun divergence for the British actor), Christian Bale's knack for choosing interesting projects and great character roles has been second to none in recent years.

He's got a career you can't really second guess and EVERY movie that he signs himself up for, I'm instantly interested in seeing straight away and I literally salivatate at the mouth with anticipation to see what he does with it. He is probably the most interesting and consistent actor working today.

Variety carry some really cool news today. They say that Bale is in negotiations to join the already cast Johnny Depp in PUBLIC ENEMIES, the next movie from director Michael Mann setup at Universal which we first spoke about here.

In AMERICAN GANGSTER like style... Bale will play Melvin Purvis, the legendary FBI agent who led the manhunt for John Dillinger, the role that belongs to Depp. What's interesting about this is that Bale was previously set to star in KILLING PABLO as a Delta Force Commander on the track of Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar for director Joe Carnahan. With that movie looking in real trouble, maybe Bale's want to be ...

The next movie from the BOURNE duo Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass officially begins filming today in Spain after nearly 12 months of preparation and remarkably, no further casting news than the lead role.

Until today it really was looking like it would be a one-man show but Variety finally tell us that Greg Kinnear, Antonie Carone and Amy Ryan have signed up to the movie with more names expected to be announced shortly.

The fictional thriller is roughly based upon Rajiv Chandrasekaran's nonfiction book "Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone" and follows a group of U.S. troops in Iraqi occupation who the press claim are being mis-treated by the men in charge who know nothing of what it is like to experience life in that war zone.

Damon leads as an officer who teams with a senior CIA officer to search for evidence of weapons of mass destruction. Ryan will play a New York Times foreign correspondent sent to Iraq to investigate the U.S. government's WMD claims. Kinnear plays another CIA officer. Antoni Corone has been cast as a colonel.

Greengrass has proved himself to be one of the most accomplished directors in the last few years, I'm ...

DISTURBIA was a pretty good movie, with a great leading performance from a young actor by the name of Shia LaBeouf and by the end of it I felt like I got my money's worth. It was never going to end up on anyone's list of favourite movies of the year but I think most people would say it was a fun little thriller.

So the director and star are back for EAGLE EYE, another thriller but this time with a little more of a larger scope. Labeouf plays a young slacker and Michelle Monaghan a single mum who by bad luck end up getting themselves involved in a political assassination.

Rosario Dawson and Billy Bob Thornton are also on board as federal agents and The Hollywood Reporter have just announced that Michael Chilkis from The Shield will play the U.S. security of defence.

Our first look at the movie comes from Just Jared and shows an angry looking and unshaven Labeouf...

LOTS MORE IMAGES HERE.

The movie is set to be wrapped next month and released in theatres in the late Summer.

Oh come on, don't tell me you have forgotten about this movie already.

TRAITOR is the spy thriller that Overture Films are producing because of a management change which saw Walt Disney Pictures drop the project like a bad habit a few years back. The espionage thriller originated from the mind of Steve Martin, the same guy who wrote and starred in THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS and BOWFINGER and whose interpretation of THE PINK PANTHER is about as useless as a chocolate fireguard.

This time thankfully (though that's a bit harsh because he is capable of great work) this time he won't be starring in the movie...

As you can see from the images above the main players here are Guy Pearce, Don Cheadle and Jeff Daniels who are working under the control of THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW director Jeffrey Nachmanoff.

The story centers on a CIA operative working undercover with a terrorist group who becomes a terrorist suspect. Cheadle is the undercover agent, while Pearce is an FBI agent investigating terrorist activities. Daniels supports as a CIA agent, as does actor Neal McDonough.

Not a lot to be taken from the stills so far but like I've said all along Cheadle and Pearce ...

Tom Cruise's only pre-strike movie to date is his small cameo in the Ben Stiller comedy TROPIC THUNDER, but the A-list actor is hoping that EDWIN A. SALT, the Kurt Wimmer scribed drama that would see him play a CIA officer who is accused of being a Russain spy, gets off the ground soon.
Halting the project which needs to have begun production by March is it's lack of director.

Terry George (HOTEL RWANDA) had held talks about helming the picture when Cruise boarded the project in July but for whatever reason that never led to anything and today's reports from Entertainment Weekly say Columbia Pictures are now eyeing Peter Berg for the project.

Berg has just come off THE KINGDOM and has just recently wrapped production on his "superhero in crisis movie`' HANCOCK and would seem avaliable at this point to take up the gig.

Though I must say, If I were Cruise's agent, I would keep him well away from this picture and would advise him to do something along the same lines as MINORITY REPORT or another INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE movie.

I think the failure of LIONS FOR LAMBS hit him pretty hard, his biggest flop in years and his public ...

Here's the first official still from Ridley Scott's next movie BODY OF LIES. Yes, I know... he is that far into production on another movie already.

Based on a David Ignatius novel of the same name and written into a screenplay by THE DEPARTED scribe William Monahan, the movie will see Leonardo DiCaprio star alongside Russell Crowe for the first time in 12 years. The plot involves a manipulative CIA boss (Crowe) who teams with an operative (DiCaprio) to trap a deadly Al Qaeda leader by framing him with a false rumor to his people that the bomber is in cahoots with the U.S.

It's a political/thriller and after Scott's AMERICAN GANGSTER, it should hopefully be filmed by a director who is brimming with confidence after some prior failures.

BLACK BOOK'S Carice Van Houten co-stars as Leo's wife, with the movie set to open sometime late next year.

Nicolas Cage.

Shame.

The movie is titled KNOWING and it's a sci/fi thriller setup at Summit Entertainment which will begin production in Melbourne in March, cutting it fine to beat the June deadline but 2 and a bit months should see everything run ok.

The film was first originated by novelist Ryne Pearson (MERCURY RISING) who came up with the idea for the flick and pitched the first draft. Since then re-writes from a couple of screenwriters have taken place but the locked shooting draft has come from Proyas himself and Stuart Hazeldine (RIVERWORLD).
Cage will play a teacher who examines the contents of a time capsule unearthed at his son's elementary school. Startling predictions in the time capsule that have already come true lead him to believe the world is going to end at the close of the week and that he and his son are somehow involved in the destruction.
Half decent plot, lots of avenues to explore here but it's kind of a similar role for Cage as his NATIONAL TREASURE movies and although I think his persona works quite well there, I'm not sure if it will here. Another question that Variety don't have the answer too is just how Proyas ...

Yawn. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

If there's one plot I'm absolutely sick to death of in Hollywood right now it's the 'kidnapped daughter' thriller. It's such a lazy plot device and I seriously believe I have seen every variation of this film that could possibly be made by now.

Here's a new poster for the latest cheap movie (they couldn't even be bothered to think of a better title), co-written by Luc Besson (THE FIFTH ELEMENT, LEON) and directed by Pierre Morel (DISTRICT 13).

The film follows Neeson as an ex-spy who sets out to on a trip across Europe to save his daughter (Maggie Grace) from the slave trade she has been forced into...

This is the movie that Neeson got lumbered with earlier this year when Spielberg decided to go off and shoot INDIANA JONES with Harrison Ford, dumping his LINCOLN biopic which Neeson had cleared his schedule for.
To be fair, the trailer ain't half bad for this actually. Neeson should make this interesting and Maggie Grace actually makes a more convincing teenage girl than I ever thought she would have. Still, I can't see this opening anywhere but mid box office chart obscurity when it opens February/March next year.

An interesting movie in development which isn't getting much coverage across the web is the $15 million Indie thriller GOD'S SPY which Variety say has just found it's lead star.

Josh Lucas, the handsome and extremely talented and under-rated actor who you will have seen in POSEIDON, AMERICAN PSYCHO and STEALTH. Needless to say he is a better actor than some of those above mentioned movies and I fully expect him to show us his talents in the adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's TELL-TALE next year.

Back to GOD'S SPY then, where he will play Roberto Calvi in the true life story of how a young wall street trader, who is really a Jesuit priest working undercover to gain experience of the financial markets. He becomes caught up in a shady political and financial conspiracy involving the Vatican Bank, the CIA, the Mafia and Masonic Lodge P2.

Calvi was dubbed 'God's Banker' (presumably Hollywood thought SPY was a more marketable title) and without giving too much away about the story here, you can catch up with the whole events (which still was subject of much controversy in this summer) by visiting Calvi's wiki page.

The legendary Peter O' Toole, Jordi Molla (he was King ...

An Oscar nominated actress has joined the cast of SHUTTER ISLAND according to Variety.

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN star and former DAWSON'S CREEK regular Michelle Williams will play Leonardo DiCaprio's wife in Martin Scorsese's next film which will begin shooting early next year.

We've spoke about this project a couple of times before but in case you need reminding, SHUTTER ISLAND is Paramount's adaptation of the Dennis Lehane's novel that will see DiCaprio star for Scorsese for the fourth time in a row, this time as a U.S. marshal who is sent to investigate the strange disappearance of a patient from a remote New England island’s mental prison hospital. ZODIAC star Mark Ruffalo will play DiCaprio’s partner whilst Academy Award winning British actor Ben Kingsley will portray the chief physician of the mental hospital.

Talented people working for a legendary director, is always good news.

And a little about the web backlash against Marty using DiCaprio again. What Scorsese is doing with Leo right now is stellar stuff, getting performances out of his leading man that he use to get out of a certain Robert De Niro. Why hunt for more leading men when DiCaprio is growing with each performance?

The contract is signed, the deal is done. Johnny Depp will indeed star as John Dillinger, a guy considered to be one of the most dangerous gangsters of all time in a Universal project that will begin filming on March 10th. Michael Mann will direct from a script he has already wrote (if it hadn't already been turned in, it wouldn't get made) and it will mark the first partnership of two Hollywood A-listers.

The film is titled PUBLIC ENEMIES and it will focus on Dillinger and also other depression-era gangsters like Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd and their struggle against J. Edgar Hoover's creation of the first federal police force.

More on Dillinger from WIKI...
He gained this reputation (and the nickname "Jackrabbit") for his graceful movements during bank heists, such as leaping over the counter (a movement he supposedly copied from the movies) and narrow getaways from police. His exploits, along with those of other criminals of the 1930s Depression era, such as Bonnie and Clyde and Ma Barker, dominated the attentions of the American press and its readers during what is sometimes referred to as the public enemy era, between 1931 and 1935, a period which led to ...

Coming Soon has revealed the new poster for M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming thriller THE HAPPENING.

The film centres on a couple on the run from a crisis which presents a large scale threat to the future of the human race.

It's a pretty cool poster... but my goodness what is going on with the font for the movie title? It just looks so out of place. THE HAPPENING will be creeping onto screens Friday 13th June 2008.

We will soon be putting together some kind of 'end of year' Obsessed With Film awards and I have a feeling that actor Josh Brolin might be in with a chance of the year's best actor. His performance as the psycho Dr. Block in PLANET TERROR was note perfect, I loved him in a supporting role in AMERICAN GANGSTER and although I haven't seen it yet (I'm desperate to see it before the end of the year) his performance in The Coen's NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is said to be spectacular.

He's had a great year on film from where I sit.

Variety today have confirmed news we were semi-expecting. Matt Damon has been unable to commit to Gus Van Sant's film on the death of Gay Rights activist Harvey Milk because he is out shooting a new Iraq thriller with Paul Greengrass, so Josh Brolin has stepped into his shoes.

Brolin will play Dan White, the San Francisco county supervisor who killed Milk and Mayor George Moscone in 1978. Also on board are SPIDER-MAN's James Franco (as Milk's lover and campaign manager) and Emile Hirsch as fellow gay rights activist Cleve Jones.

Harvey Milk as we already know will be played by ...
