When The Mummy remake premiered in 1999, it managed to appeal to a wide audience due to its sub-Indiana Jones tone, a winning performance from Brendan Fraser, and cheesy-yet-creative special effects. In other words, Universal stole one from movie audiences.

The inevitable sequel, The Mummy Returns, was an incoherent mess salvaged only by the rising star power of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. I despised both films, but the sequel made me almost physically ill. I couldn't believe that Universal had the balls to make a sequel to such nonsense, especially when the first film literally begged to be left alone.

And now we have another sequel to the franchise nobody cares about. Seven years later, The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is wasting valuable screen time.

The story is such a load of fucking bullshit that I can barely convince my fingers to type the synopsis. The overlong and overly serious prologue drones on about a dead emporer waiting to be resurrected so that he can call forth his undead army ... blah, blah, blah. It's like something out of Dragon Wars, except that film was infinitely more fun than this. The story takes this turn to the Orient in order ...

After two solid weeks at the top of the box office charts, this weekend looks set to see The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor dethrone the giant that is The Dark Knight and become no. 1.

On Friday, The Mummy 3 earned an estimated $15.3 million which although down on the last movie's $23.4 million, after an absence of seven years and the popular Rachel Weisz that has to be seen as a success.

If the movie can sustain, it should beat The Dark Knight to first place, though the Warner Bros. picture still continues to be a juggernaut. The movie earned $12.6 million on Friday, only 46% down on last week which puts the movie on $363.7 million domestically.

The John C. Reilly/Will Ferrell comedy Step Brothers fell a substantial 57% from it's debut weekend and grossed only $5 million, though it's domestic gross of $51 million is good after eight days for a movie made on a $65 million budget.

The only other wide release of the weekend was the political comedy Swing Vote, which opened in fifth place with a poultry $1.95 million. I really thought that Kevin Costner project had a real chance when it was first announced ...

At the 11th hour, China have finally secured a deal to allow The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor to open in Asian territories.

Despite being filmed and set in the country, with some major Asian stars (Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh) and dealing with Chinese history which could easily bost the economy and profile of the China around the time of the Bejing Olympics, was surprisingly set to be banned from the country because it dealt with a big taboo for the culture - movies dealing with Ghosts.

The film will open in Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore on July 31st, the U.S. on August 1st and in the U.K. on August 18th. A release around that time in China is expected for what will be a wide release.

Bill Kong, producer and head of Universal's distribution outlet in Hong Kong and China said...
"The exact date is a matter of my commercial judgment," Kong said. "The best date might be right after the Olympic Games (Aug. 8-24). You can't publicize or market a movie during the Games, as people's attention will be elsewhere."

Well... you are not going to believe this.

It's the most shocking thing since man walked on the moon!

Matt LOVES the trailer for an upcoming Rob Cohen (Fast and the Furious, XXX, Stealth) movie!

I'm in love with the trailer for The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor!

I have no clue how /Film got hold of it but YOU HAVE TO GO AND SEE THE TRAILER RIGHT NOW!

You know my mind says this should look terrible and I know it will be but man if some of those beautiful and iconic shots of undead warriors, statues, Jet Li looking as evil as he has looked in years and just the warmth and character that Brendan Fraser oozes on screen doesn't win you over.

And yes, Maria Bello (she totally butches her main line) sucks and the character she plays should have been written out once Rachel Weisz decided not to return but I can live with that small problem if the flick lives up to this trailer.

Call me crazy, call me nuts but the trailer has won me over.

And at least they have done something different. It feels fresh, a new direction... not the same old same old with the same ...

We should be due a trailer very soon for this August's fourth movie in the new Mummy canon - and the third involving the characters of Rick and Eve O'Connell.

I've said much about my dislike for nearly every aspect of this film's production but for once I will give the guys some credit.

That is one cool and creepy poster...

This will probably be the first publicity for the average movie fan who will now be very much aware that Rachel Weisz is not returning for the flick. I wonder how much of an effect it will have on the financial success of the feature.

It certainly will effect the movie quality wise, I think we all know that..

The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor opens Aug, 1st (U.S.) and Aug, 7th (U.K.) from director Rob Cohen and will star Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, John Hannah, Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Wong, Luke Ford and Isabella Leong.

This comes from the guys at IESB who are attending ShoWest this weekend. Here is the first poster artwork we have seen for the August's third Mummy movie...

Mortal Kombat much?

Actually speaking of Mortal Kombat, I always thought Mummy director Rob Cohen would end up with that franchise if/when a new movie ever gets off the ground.

Not that I want him to end up with it, in fact very much the opposite... but his filmography and his love for martial arts and all things Jet Li and Bruce Lee would make him push for the gig.

And after all, he's neck and neck with Paul W.S. Anderson (director of the first MK movie) in delivering studio hack jobs from action franchises, it just seems so obvious he will end up with the gig. Shiver!

Things I've learned from the latest Rob Cohen entry on THE MUMMY 3 (there might be a potential spoiler in the last bullet point)...

Trailer is expected to be online within the next four weeks.

The film at this point is running at 2 hours and 5 minutes long but could change once the first studio screening has taken place on February 28th.

The film is visual effects crazy, but then again we knew that the day that Cohen signed on for the movie.

An epic battle between Michelle Yeoh's Army of the Dead and Jet Li's Terracotta Army will take up the final 25 minutes of the film.

Full article at Coming Soon.

THE MUMMY 3: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR opens August 1st but it's gonna have to take a hell of a trailer to get my ass out of seeing THE DARK KNIGHT for the hundredth time.
