This is actually our second review of this year's The Last House on the Left. Back in April, Martyn Conterio reviewed the film for us.

A remake of an early Wes Craven film doesn't actually sound like too bad an idea on paper. Remakes of recent films that already work, or old classics that everyone loves, are almost sacrilegious (I'm sure all of us at OWF have had a moan at one time or another on that topic) but Last House on the Left just wasn't that great.

The 1972 breakthrough film for the man who would became a giant of the genre was a good concept that could be made cheaply and effectively. It kind of wasn't either, despite having its moments. And this is why, I suspect, Craven himself came on board as a producer: to see his own little piece of personal history made how it could be.

Interestingly, a relative unkown would step up to the directorial plate and try to make it his own. Dennis Iliadis has made just a couple of films previously, none of which were big budget Hollywood fares, making him an interesting prospect for this project. My personal, if slightly optimistic, view going into this ...

In As Good As It Gets, Jack Nicholson’s grouchy writer, Melvin Udall, quips that when he thinks of female characters for his novels, he takes away ‘reason and accountability’. That pretty much sums up Hollywood’s cynical re-packaging of modern horror classics. In the past few years there have been slick rehashes of seminal titles such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Friday the 13th, and now arrives Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left as the latest nightmare off the production line at the Dream Factory.

Treating the material as sacrosanct or reverential is not necessarily the point. Most of the remakes care little for their original elements. What annoys the most is the loss of edge and daring - becoming horror movies without teeth. They don’t bite, they suck.
Last House on the Left does have a notorious reputation due to its grim depiction of sexual violence. The film itself is a loose remake of Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring and in turn based upon a Swedish folktale.

Despite finding its inspiration in Swedish medieval literature and world cinema, Wes Craven’s debut film was an ultra low budget production intent on ...

Have you ever seen Wes Craven's debut movie The Last House on the Left?

I've only become accustomed to it in the last year or so, it's a really nasty and horrifying horror movie. It's unsettling. The film is about escaped convicts who take two teenage girls hostage and contains at least 30 minutes of the most brutal and shocking dehumanizing of film characters you will ever see in your life.

Forget the torture porn movies that are plaguing our cinema screens right now. This one is the real deal...

Man, I hope they keep that advertising campaign for the remake.
We've known for a while now that Wes Craven was receiving a nice wad of cash for allowing his most disturbing horror movie to be remade, just like he did a few years ago with The Hills Have Eyes.
Variety say that Monica Potter (from Along Came A Spider) and Tony Goldwyn (The Last Samurai) have been cast, probably as the parents of the two girls.
David Iliadis will be making his Hollywood directing debut with the picture which will shoot this month in South Africa. Can it be possibly be as disturbing as the original?
