Much more Heath Ledger than I expected in the long awaited trailer for The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, a movie that OWF's Simon Gallagher analysed almost frame for frame at the Cannes Film Festival, a movie he says is one of "Gilliam's best".

And when he says "Gilliam's best", that actually means something, compared to if I had said "Gilliam's best" as I am most certainly not a fan of his output for the most part, with a couple of exceptions.

Lionsgate will open the film this October in the U.K., and if your anything like me then there's nothing much more than a curiosity for seeing Heath Ledger's last performance that warrants seeing this - which by the way, judging from the trailer contains a post-The Dark Knight confidence that it's heartbreaking to think we won't now see grow and grow into bigger and more significant parts.

After the jump, an excerpt from Simon's review...

... at one point I began to dread the moment in the film where it would become obvious that Ledger had died (the appearance of Johnny Depp, Jude Law or Colin Farrell effectively sounding the death note) which tainted even the most fantasticalGilliam-inspired scenes. This is the hand that fate ...

Last week saw the removal of Heath Ledger's name and the status update on Terry Gilliam's THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS to read "The project has been shut down" leading to some rumors around the web that the movie had been scrapped altogether.

Thankfully reports today have dismissed that theory and Ledger's footage on PARNASSUS won't end up on the cutting room floor.

From Quick Stop Movies via AICN...
The source within the production wanted to make certain the word gets out that the production is not in fact shut down but is moving forward and will feature Heath Ledger in his last role. This decision to keep Heath’s performance and rework the film to accommodate it was made out of respect for that performance and in memory of Heath. This despite somewhat shady efforts by certain parties, the source tells us, to paint The Dark Knight as Heath’s final role.
Speaking from my perspective only, going ahead with the movie seems to be the most sensible thing to do when the concept and plot is so organic that it allows you the freedom of bringing in other actors to play the part, especially when I'm certain there won't be ...

Rumors galore in regards to the last performance of Heath Ledger in THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS. First we heard last week of the classy move that would bring Johnny Depp in to carry on the movie where Ledger left of as a different character (it's a magical universe so there's room to do such appearance transporting things and not lose our interest) but now that's been shot down because Depp needs time to prepare for Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES.

We heard that Ledger had around six weeks of work left on Gilliam's movie, which might only leave Depp 1 or 2 weeks to commit, if that, before he plays John Dillinger.

So then we heard that Ledger might transform into Depp but then Depp's character would change into someone else, and so on and so on... with several actors working for next to nothing in respect to Heath. Again, another classy move.

The latest development though is not encouraging. Christopher Plummer, the co-star of the movie gives us the latest...
“Terry’s throwing himself into the job of trying to salvage the picture,” said Plummer. “[Gilliam is] trying to work out at this moment how to continue on. Fortunately, because the film deals with magic, ...
