John Rhys-Davies was always the obvious casting choice to play Gloin in Guillermo del Toro's The Hobbit, the father of the dwarf warrior Gimli whom he played in The Lord of the Rings trilogy but sadly, Rhys-Davies has told Empire that he has turned the offer to return.

He has spurned the opportunity to play his famous character's father because of a mixture of repeating himself and the physical strain of having to go through those heavy make-up hours once again.
John Rhys-Davies was a Dwarf in The Lord of The Rings trilogy,
despite being taller than co-stars
Viggo Mortensen and
Orlando Bloom.
"I've already been asked and to be honest with you, I wouldn't," Rhys-Davies said. "I have already completely ruled it out. There's a sentimental part of me that would love to be involved again. Really I am not sure my face can take that sort of punishment any more."
You can read the interview in full HERE and it's worth noting that he hasn't ruled out completely a return to Middle-Earth, he just doesn't want to play the same kind of part again. He would return for an Elf or any of the other characters in the movie, just not a dwarf.
I'd ...

"No, we won’t be announcing Bilbo for a little while," says Peter Jackson to Empire when asked about the rumors an actor would be attached to the lead role of The Hobbit at the San Diego Comic Con. "We’re starting to think about casting, but we’re knee-deep in the script right now. And when we do go to actors, they’re probably going to ask to see a script, so we’re powering ahead with getting the first draft done.”

So now you know.

"The whisper we keep hearing in recent days is that the name of the lead star in Guillermo del Toro's "The Hobbit" will be announced next week at Comic-Con International" says Hero Complex, a kind of geek blog that lies within the L.A. Times.

With Peter Jackson in attendance at the Con for the first time next week, it has become the logical fanboy premonition that we are going to find out something major about The Hobbit, especially with del Toro and Jackson repeating over and over again over the last few months that they know the man they want for the part.

The names put forward by the blog do raise some eyebrows though. Dr. Who's David Tennant, Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe, the always spoken about James McAvoy and er, Jack Black.

Apparently Tennant, who is a name I have never previously thought of for the part will be in attendance at the Con next week for the first time also (promoting the upcoming Dr. Who feature) which is why his link is getting a little bit of momentum. Though isn't he too tall, too skinny to be a hobbit? An Elf is surely going to be his calling in a Tolkien feature, wouldn't you say?

Tennant and Radcliffe, two icons of other ...

Guillermo del Toro has been out promoting his horror novel The Strain but inevtiably interviewers are way more interested in what's going down with The Hobbit, possibly the biggest fanboy movie since Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (although obviously The Dark Knight sitting proudly as the second highest grossing movie of all time would dispute this) and congrats to Simon Mayo who got more out of him than most on BBC Radio 5 Live This Week.

It's a great interview... Mayo is the best presenter on U.K. radio and del Toro is always open, honest and full of interesting things to say. del Toro joins at the 1 hour 47 minute mark and really it's better to hear del Toro tell you this stuff than it is to read it from me. So for once, I'm pretty much encouraging you not to read any further, at least not until you have listened to the interview. DO IT NOW!

Ok done that? Good. Let's begin. So before we get to The Hobbit, I was actually more excited for what del Toro had to say about Mary Shelley's 19th century gothic novel Frankenstein, a novel that he once again proclaims is a "lifelong dream" for ...

Guillermo del Toro has told MTV this week that the search for Bilbo is now down to one actor and he expects to reveal the name in the upcoming weeks. I wonder if it's the same name he and Peter Jackson were said to have mutually agreed on over a year ago.

My choice then and still now is relatively obscure British actor Martin Freeman whose career never quite took off the way you thought it might after The Office and then The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Post both productions which were high profile, he was straight back down to obscurity.

Lately I've been hearing a lot of support drumed up for Michael Sheen and I'm warming to that choice, very much actually. He's a better actor than Freeman and I'm pretty much sold on the fact he can play anyone, he certainly has the eyes and intensity of Ian Holm. Just doesn't quite look as much like him as Freeman does, but then that should never be the deal breaker.

And it seems people still believe James McAvoy can do something with the character and I'm getting anxious that he hasn't won out a big role in a while. Brendon Connelly ...

Guillermo del Toro will film THE HOBBIT in a grueling 370 day shoot in New Zealand, by far the largest and longest filming schedule he will ever take on in his career.

It actually beats out the length Peter Jackson spent filming the three LORD OF THE RINGS films where principal photography lasted 274 days though he did work on the movie for four years with very lengthy pre and post production schedules.

del Toro also mentions in the live Blu-Ray chat he conducted this week to celebrate the release of HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY that he is hoping that HELLBOY creator Mike Mignola will join his dream team of professionals on the film, citing the following as the top of his wish list...
Hopefully Mignola, Barlowe, Spectral Motion, Guillermo Navarro and others…
Filming will begin sometime 2010, with casting set to begin early 2009. Previously del Toro said we would start hearing casting news at around Christmas time this year.

THE HOBBIT Part I will be released in December 2011 with Part II coming a whole year later.

Guillermo del Toro, who alongside Christopher Nolan (man, I wish he would do one of these articles too!) is the most exciting director in the business today has his next nine years of directing all sewn up according to Variety.

This is what we can look forward to from the talented Mexican maestro...

For the next four years, two movies based on The Hobbit and bridging the gap between Tolkien's first novel and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

"No one expected ‘The Hobbit’ to come about; it was the most marvelous monkey wrench tossed into my life,"

While we are on the subject of The Hobbit, Variety have revealed that del Toro is not in New Zealand with Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh for most of the writing stages of the film. He is only present for a short period of time every three weeks and does the rest of his consulting via video conferencing.
Then his next projects are likely to all be for Universal, the studio he has enjoyed a close relationship with since they agreed to finance his most personal and self indulgent (I don't mean that particularly as a cite) film to date, Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

So far we know that Andy Serkis & Ian McKellen will both return for The Hobbit when filming begins next year on Guillermo del Toro's first of a two film epic that will bridge the gap between Tolkien's first novel and the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy.

We have also heard in the past that Jackson and del Toro both agree that any of the original cast members who would like to return to the series, no matter who they are, would be welcome to return... probably with the second movie featuring them.

So at this moment, no one cast member from the original franchise can be ruled out. Except John Noble, who has told MTV this week that he would decline the offer to return to the series, even if del Toro asked him directly.

“If they said, ‘Would you come and play Denethor again,’” Noble said, “I would have to say, ‘No, I’m doing [new J.J. Abrams television series] ‘Fringe’! And I certainly couldn’t play a younger Denethor or even Echelion now that I’m an older John. Not even with makeup.”

“I do wish them the best of luck, however,” he added. “There’s tremendous fan interest in ‘The Hobbit.’ But ‘Lord ...

I'm imagining them all together in a Hobbit home somewhere, the quartet of Peter Jackson, Philipa Boyens, Fran Walsh and Guillermo del Toro writing the two movies that will not only adapt J.R.R. Tolkien's original Middle-Earth set novel but also will bridge the gap between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

EW have confirmed writing has now taken place with a forum member of The One Ring also claiming del Toro recently said in a Q & A for Hellboy II that the writing process on the film was "beautiful".

The first movie in the new two part epic is set to be released in December 2011 and should begin shooting late next year.
We expect to hear the first casting of new roles around Christmas time, though we do already know that Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis will return as Gandalf and Gollum respectively.

Despite the behind-the-scenes involvement of Peter Jackson and the filming location of New Zealand, Guillermo del Toro has given further hints that his adaptation of The Hobbit will be distinctly different to Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Although there will be congruence, the Mexican auteur looks set to make sure that the two new Tolkien films will be marked by his unique touch.

Speaking to The Times, the Hellboy helmer elaborated on how he’ll be looking to draw upon his fascination with fairytales and mythology and how the new duology will fit in with Jackson’s works.
“I’m trying to be faithful to what I read when I was young. That’s The Hobbit I’m serving. I cannot serve a Peter Jackson film. We also hope to bridge the trilogy. We will create an expansion of what lies in the four books and in a number of appendices. I’m not going to New Zealand for two years to do one movie. I’m going there for four years.”
It’ll be interesting to see how del Toro handles the material and how the production will unfold both in terms of visuals and story. Such statements certainly give a good indication that del Toro is passionate about the ...

Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro stated in the live internet chat from a few weeks back that any of the Lord of the Rings actors who wished to return would be welcomed and fit into The Hobbit.

Unsurprisingly, we've heard many of the alumni voice their interest in coming back since the film was greenlit - the latest being Christopher Lee who played the evil wizard Saurman in the three films.

Lee was the only acting member of the crew to have ever met the book's author J.R.R. Tolkien before his death and claims he reads the LOTR books once a year religiously, so I can't say I'm surprised at all by these comments to Empire...
“I’ve read the books time and again,” said the 86-year-old. “Originally Saruman The White and the rest of the wizards, or the Istari as they call them, were immortal. There were five of them, two of them never appear, I know their names but they never appear, and the only three that are mentioned are Saruman The White, Gandalf The Grey and Radagast The Brown who you never see – so basically it’s two wizards.

“They lived for thousands of years and they were sent to the ...

As part of an exclusive interview in the next issue of the Empire magazine which hits stands this Friday, Guillermo del Toro has sensationally revealed that himself and Peter Jackson have mutually agreed on their choice for who should step into the shoes of Ian Holm and lead the film as Bilbo Baggins.

The only name I remember being rumored was the extremely smart choice of Martin Freeman (The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy) who you may remember auditioned for the villain role in Jackson's upcoming drama The Lovely Bones but ultimately lost out to Stanley Tucci.

Since that day, I have championed Freeman who may seriously be the only actor that has spoken to Jackson about the role. Could it be him?

Del Toro says...
“I can tell you that it’s down to a few names that we all agree upon. And that our first choice…completely, magically, we said the same name. All of us!”

"We said this is the guy we would talk to, but until the pages are there you have to let the character tell you who he wants to be played by. You can expect at least a year before we announce any casting.”
Freeman is beyond perfect. He looks like ...

Things we find out from the Hobbit chat which went down yesterday... Peter Jackson was in sunny New Zealand, Guillermo del Toro was in rainy London.

Peter Jackson informed us on the current status of the film...
at this point in time the plan is to write for the rest of this year and start early conceptual designs. 2009 will be dedicated to pre-production on both movies and 2010 will be the year we shoot both films back to back. Post productin follows one film at a time with The Hobbit being released Dec 2011, and F2 release Dec 2012. That is the schedule in about as much detail as we have ourselves at the moment.
On the subject of location shooting...
[Middle Earth is a] natural countryside and that's where a lot of shooting will take place. Location will be favored and real set construction.
On Ian Holm, who immortalized Bilbo Baggins in the original but is probably too old for a prequel...
We will utilize him in some fashion for sure but the difficulty of th erole will be better assesed after we do the script (s).
On Howard Shore returning to compose the score...
Yes- absolutely, Shore is teh VOICE of these films and we ...

Pre-production on The Hobbit is moving quickly now with the final planning nuts and bolts currently being worked out.

According to Variety, it would seem that Fran Walsh and Phillppa Boyens will scribe the script for The Hobbit under the supervision of Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro. This was a partnership (minus Jackson of course) which worked extremely well on the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The bigger news though is that del Toro has approached Viggo Mortensen about reprising his role of Aragon, a character who is not mentioned at all in the original Hobbit book.

del Toro says...
"We will all be involved in the script in some fashion but the exact definition is about a week away, " said del Toro. "I am all for keeping the actors who originated the parts, as much as availability and their willingness will allow."
The trades also mention del Toro has approached both Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis to reprise their roles of Gandalf and Gollum respectively, two characters who play a big part in the novel. Actually I would go one further than that and say both actors have either signed or have shook hands on the deal with a verbal commitment to ...

The internet can really come back and bite you in the ass sometimes.

It happened to poor Rob Zombie when he mentioned in an interview once that remakes were; "the worst thing that any filmmaker can do... your only going to make yourself look like an asshole", to then only a few years later finding himself working on a redo of one of the most popular Horror movies of all time.

So basically, he admits he's an asshole.

Now it's happened to Guillermo del Toro who as recently as May 2006, told the world he didn't like those small guys with hairy feet...
I was never into heroic fantasy. At all. I don't like little guys and dragons, hairy feet, hobbits -- I've never been into that at all. I don't like sword and sorcery, I hate all that stuff.

C.S. Lewis was another thing. I really enjoyed him as a kid, but he's too Catholic for me. It's not something as an adult I can feel comfortable relating to.
Oops!

One of the coolest plus points of Guillermo del Toro being in charge of The Hobbit is that he's so good and open to his fans (which is why he keeps telling us of projects he is interested in making, as if they were really happening - he can't help himself!) that he will keep us up to date every step or the way.

I mean how many directors out there would give such a great interview about his intentions for the movie just hours after it was officially annouced as happening to the world.

Here's an excerpt from a good del Toro interview (I could post it all here but that would be wrong) he conducted with The One Ring, where he tells us what the very controversial second movie after The Hobbit will be like...
The Hobbit’, the book, is really one self-contained film, so for the second movie we sat down and worked it out. When we did this we got really excited because this second film is not a ‘tag on’, it’s not ‘filler’, it’s an integral part of telling the story of those 50 years of history lost in the narrative. There will be certain things that we ...

The announcement that Guillermo del Toro was hinting at during last weekend's NY Comic Con has come.

Variety say that the Mexican director WILL direct The Hobbit and is moving out to New Zealand to spend the next FOUR YEARS with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and the majority of the original Lord of the Rings crew to work on the picture.

This would hint that Peter Jackson's involvement will be really close to the production.

Warner Bros, the studio who now own New Line (who are making this in conjunction with MGM) are not be balking at the size of the project. The two planned movies will be every bit as epic as the Lord of the Rings franchise was.

The films will be part Hobbit and part new stuff and what could be spliced together from the rest of Tolkien's huge LOTR universe and will bridge the sixty year gap between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.
“A true original, Guillermo is a cinematic magician who has never lost his child-like sense of wonder. He understands that the fantastic must be grounded in the real and that all stories are only ever a reflection of ourselves,” say Jackson and Walsh.

“We have long ...

Guillermo del Toro is DESPERATE to do The Hobbit.

Peter Jackson is desperate for del Toro to do The Hobbit.

Warner Bros. (they bought New Line remember) are desperate for del Toro to do The Hobbit.

WE are desperate for him to do The Hobbit.

According to the man himself who spoke to IGN, we should finally find out this week if the film is actually happening under his direction...
“We’re all in agreement on what we want to do creatively… we are coming to the point where the deal either will happen or not happen…Right now, I haven’t booked any planes yet… If it happens I would be coming in with humility and hard work”
Presumably the only thing stopping the movie right now is the legal issues with the Tolkien estate and also whether WB can come up with the necessary budget.

But del Toro is so keen. And just listen to the amount of research he is actually looking forward to under-taking. This is a dedicated guy and this kind of work ethic should be a role model for any director wanting to adapt a huge universe for the big screen. This from Coming Soon...
"I fell in love with "The Hobbit" but I'm marrying ...
