I'm not going to blame director Scott Derrickson for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL debacle, it was a project that was doomed to fail before he jumped on board. He was just the poor cog in the wheel to make some much needed money for Fox.

And we know he's not a hack. He did a great job with the horror/drama THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, he is more than capable of helming a good story with effective atmosphere. Just the huge 20th Century Fox production got too much for him.

Which is why I'm surprised to read today that Variety are reporting Derrickson has accepted the offer to direct HYPERION CANTOS, a huge sci-fi project setup at Warner Bros, but we won't knock him for having big ambitions.

Setup back in April, Derrickson will direct from a Trevor Sands screenplay that takes Dan Simmon's first two novels in his HYPERION series ("Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion) and turns it into one tentpole movie.
Story is set in the distant future, as a space war threatens Hyperion, a planet known for the Time Tombs -- large artifacts that can move through time and are guarded by a gruesome monster called the Shrike.
Derrickson's ...

You couldn't pay me to see THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL this weekend.

You guys all know me, I'm not one for writing out and out attack articles on movies... even high profile disasters like THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE HAPPENING which I thought were absolutely dreadful, I said my small peace here and there, and I moved on. Hollywood will always drop the ball every summer with one or two movies but in 2008 we were treated pretty darn well with what we got I thought. Even GET SMART I could tolerate.

But for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL remake, well it just makes me angry and wanna scream to the heavens and I'm not going to apologize for it. There's just something that nags me about the movie everytime I see that it's the biggest release of the weekend in my local cinema. And I've been bashing the movie for almost two years, in fact at one point someone suggested I had a serious problem with Keanu Reeves because I didn't like how this film was turning out.

Reeves is only a small problem of this movie. Only one piece of a massive falling house of cards which, ...

Robert Wise's 1951 Cold War-era THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL was a cut above the rest. Dealing with the simple story of an alien named Klaatu, landing on Earth in a flying saucer to warn the population that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a threat to other planets. Klaatu had an invincible and very protective robot companion named Gort, who could unleash fearsome power when intimidated. The situation provoked fear in audiences and led to a brooding, unpretentious quality that evoked tangible tension out of its haunting predicament. It had suspense, it had restraint, and it was within a class of its own.

On the contrary director Scott Derrickson's (who debuted with dreary HELLRAISER: INFERNO then managed to spellbound some audiences with eerie courtroom horror THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE) reimagination is an insignificant, bloated, emotionally redundant mess, with a tendency to paint over its muddled plot deficiencies with laughable sequences of CGI nonsense and banal dialogue that makes the original resemble Shakespeare.

But at least the initial built up is unsettling enough to provoke some moments of anticipation - and dare I say it, it is during these moments that the tone was almost akin to the eerie unease ...

Before we get into the full press conference for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL which Oliver Pfeiffer attended this week, I had to drag up this newsworthy quote Keanu Reeves let slip about a potential third movie in the BILL & TED franchise...
"There would have to be a good reason to do another one" (Reeves explains).

"Yeah I have spoken about it to Alex, (co-star Alex Winter aka 'Bill' to Reeves 'Ted') who is a good friend of mine and we came up with this idea of the characters in their forties and 'what if they didn't save the world?' kind of thing, and how they might ignore their children and wives as their adventures take over their lives and they become these really bad parents. But now that I am already in my mid forties (Keanu turned 44 in September), we might have to wait until we are in our fifties to do it... Still it could happen!
BACK TO THE PRESS CONFERENCE...

In an inscrutable 20 year career Hollywood heartthrob Keanu Reeves has transformed himself from a floppy-haired comedy performer of cult kiddie favourites like BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE/BOGUS JOURNEY and family friendly flicks like PARENTHOOD, to reinventing himself as ...

20th Century Fox are playing the desperation card. Coming Soon have confirmed with the studio that the new trailer for X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE will play only in the theatres specifically with prints of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL on Dec. 12th and won't be shown online or on t.v. until a later date.

In other words, they are trying to reach out that little further to entice the comic book geeks that this new Keanu Reeves blockbuster might actually be worth seeing. Clearly they are starting to get anxious over the appeal of such a bleak looking movie.

In regards to X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, means we will be subjected to recorded bootlegged trailers like this which leaked online showing a presentation from the Comic Con Panel of the movie this summer...

Will the appearance of Wolverine be enough to see the awful looking remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL?

A 7 minute extended trailer for 20th Century Fox's blockbuster Christmas release THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL played on Fox last night just before J.J. Abrams' new show Fringe.

You can see it below.

I still say Keanu Reeves is so wrong for this. Can you really believe him as an alien? He is too famous an actor, especially too famous for playing it stiff for this role to be effective. I mean he ain't playing the role any different to how he plays any other, so how are we suppose to be believe he is an alien?

It's just the regular Reeves performance!

The movie opens in the U.K. and U.S. on December 12th, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates and John Cleese co-star. Scott Derrickson (THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE) directs.

Thanks to Cinema Blend for the vid!

You may think I'm purposefully being really harsh and I'm hoping this film fails (actually I do) but when they keep releasing shitty stuff, I will keep blasting them for it. There is no excuse for making posters as lame as this...

So it's Keanu Reeves' biggest role in a while and remarkably even for himself he phones it in. There is just no way to defend this. Even though it's not in the same genre I have visions of The Wicker Man remake with every word that comes out of Reeves' mouth.

I'm dumbfounded and shocked that in the age we live in today they have decided against using the "we are destroying the planets with our weapons of mass destruction" theme and instead gone for the eco-disaster plot. It's terrible and quickly strips away the tension and power of the original film.

And in any event, why would an alien from another planet be concerned with our eco problems?

SEE IT QUALITY QUICKTIME HERE
This is not The Day The Earth Stood Still. How 20th Century Fox got away with calling it as such is a mystery because the movie is completely different from Robert Wise's classic that it deserves no comparison.

I would be less pissed if it was just called something else. Then I wouldn't care. I would still say it looked awful but I would be less annoyed with it.

John Cleese can be added to the wealth of acting experience lined up for Scott Derrickson's THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL redo, a movie that marks his second directorial project after the 2005 creepy courtroom drama THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE.

He will play the character of Dr. Barnhardt, the physicist who plays a pivotal role in figuring out the message and meaning of why the alien Klatu has arrived on Earth.

Will Cleese play the role straight or has been added for the film's comic relief? Cleese hasn't done a serious part in years, his most recent credits being a "Grizzled Sergeant" in AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, the voice of King Harold in the SHREK movies and the voice of a sheep in CHARLOTTE'S WEB.

He also has a role in the upcoming PINK PANTHER sequel.

I can't help but feel that this remake will be as quiet a release as the INVASION OF THE BODYSNATCHERS redo was earlier this year. And although I never want a movie to fail, if sacrificing this remake meant that remakes of quality sci-fi movies lessens, then that might be the one good thing to come out of this project.

The movie is scheduled for ...

Jennifer Connelly is threatening to turn into an invisible actress. Not only is she the skinniest actress in Hollywood but her roles in Blood Diamond, Little Children and 'from the trailers' Reservation Road (I haven't seen it yet) she has that bland female wife or love interest part who exists as barely more than a plot device.

Variety say that Connelly will play the Helen Benson role in the upcoming sci-fi remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still, a part first played in 1951 by actress Patricia Neal.

So she shall once again have the plot device role. Sad really, remember how good she was in things like Requiem for a Dream?

Kathy Bates is also attached to the movie. Keanu Reeves is of course Klaatu, the giant robot which comes to Earth to warn us that if we humans can't leave in peace then we shall be destroyed.

The original movie is one of the best sci-fi movies of the 50's and one that is still very relevant today. The Exorcism of Emily Rose helmer Scott Derrickson showed promise with his first movie and has been given a big budget for this, but is he fighting a losing battle on this one?

The remake of the 50's sci-fi classic THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL has been delayed until December reports Dark Horizons. The studio claim the reason is the worry that SPEED RACER will take away it's audience on May 9th next year when both films were due to open head-to-head but it's obvious it's been delayed because they haven't actually got round to filming anything yet.

They hired THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE director Scott Derrickson to helm this movie all the way back in April and it took them over four months to secure Keanu Reeves as their first casting and principal photography hasn't begun yet, so even if SPEED RACER wasn't opening on that day then there was no way in hell they would have it completed in time.

The original is one of the most fascinating of 50's sci-fi paranoia and although the themes are relevant today, a remake is about as unnecessary as they come. I did like THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE though, even if it did just take the best parts of THE EXORCIST and build a hammy story around that.

Maybe 20th Century Fox should have a built a new story that homaged the original but ...

After recently pricing himself out of a big role in Watchmen, Keanu Reeves is on the hunt for his next big blockbuster. And let's be frank about this, he hasn't had a blockbuster hit since the last Matrix movie in 2003, as the four years since have seen him mainly take on smaller movies with the exception being Constantine which was a huge disappointment domestically for Warner Brothers.

Variety report today that he might have found his next big blockbuster. They say the that 20th Century Fox have tapped him up to star in the remake of the 1950's sci-fi classic The Day The Earth Stood Still which we announced in April would be directed by The Exorcism of Emily Rose helmer, Scott Derrickson. The remake will be Derrickson's sophomore movie, as it is for scribe David Scarpa whose single previous credit is The Last Castle.

Reeves will play the role of Klaatu, a humanoid alien who comes to Earth with his indestructible robot telling world leaders that their continued aggression towards each other will result in destruction from species watching a far. Production is set to begin either at the end of the year of early 2008 as Reeves is currently ...

The announcement two months ago that a remake of the 1950's classic science fiction movie The Day The Earth Stood Still was in the works over at Fox for a release next year came completely out of the blue, and I was hoping it was just a bit of nonsense rumor that was floating about.

Sadly that's not the case.

Hollywood North Report are telling us that Scott Derrickson who helmed the visually nice and actually quite passable horror flick The Exorcism of Emily Rose has been hired to direct what is expected to be a modern remake, probably along the same lines as Spielberg's War of the Worlds.

Remarkably, the film is set to begin shooting very soon in Vancouver and won't be wrapped until November.

Rather than me babble on about how good the original movie helmed by the great Robert Wise is and how it SHOULD NEVER BE REMADE EVER, I've posted the trailer for you to see for yourselves below.

If you haven't seen it, I encourage you to go out and give it a go... it's a perfect example of the turmoil and uncertainty of the future in the 1950's culture which ended up being a decade of some masterpieces ...

Firstshowing.net have got a confirmed report from 20th Century Fox that a remake of the science fiction classic The Day The Earth Stood Still is in the works for a release sometime next year.

No cast or director are attached as of yet, but a release of May 9th is being touted around.

Man, do we really need a remake of this classic?

The Robert Wise original is great and a perfect product of the 1950's time period that it was produced under. Sure a remake could work, but if Steven Spielberg couldn't even make a great War of the Worlds movie (although I did like it quite a bit) then what hope do we have for this?
