There's a insane story floating around the web right now, instigated by the late Heath Ledger's agent who has come out with the outlandish claim that Ledger was actually trying to get himself fired from The Dark Knight with his unique and "out there" performance as The Joker.

Which of course is utter insanity because simply put, you don't win an Oscar by trying to get yourself fired. No sir. That's not how it works.

You watch his performance as The Joker, which I'm sure you all have a thousand times and you try and tell me that Ledger hasn't spent many hours locked away in a dark room all by himself (as reports at the time suggested) carving out this crazy character. The anxiety from playing The Joker killed the guy, remember?

If he was truly trying to get himself fired, there's far easier ways of going about it. Turning up late, not bothering, being an asshole on set, etc.

Here's what Worst Previews have quoted from Vanity Fair...
According to Ledger's agent Steven Alexander and cinematographer/friend Nicola Pecorini, the actor had a pay-or-play deal on "Knight," which means that he would be compensated no matter how terrible he ends up being. This gave ...

Ah, it's that time of year again. The cold snows of Winter are about to thaw, new leaves begin to bud on the trees and the stream of Oscar films are making way for the torrent of big budget blockbusters. First on the list is the heavily-hyped and long-awaited adaptation of the Watchmen graphic novel. A complicated and detailed tale of an alternate history in which superheroes were embraced as bringers of justice, only to gradually become marginalised as dangerous and unregulated menaces to society. Interweaving the story of two generations, the story is an expansive discussion of power and justice that draws in detail on the lives of 8 (yes, eight) heroes.

However, amid the accusations that WATCHMEN will be confusing and complicated, it is worth remembering that the director is Zack Snyder: the man who implified and stylised 300 SPARTANS in to 300, and took the politicized zombie world George Romero and made the glossy 2004 version of DAWN OF THE DEAD.

His work on WATCHMEN is no different. The story is broken down admirably well, and told in a series of sequences that are absorbing, exciting and, perhaps best of all, manageable. Sure it's a plot with several big ...

So we did it. Bet many of you guys thought I was talking out of my ass and that I would never get round to it.

But late Saturday night, the three amigo's... (ironically straight after we did watch a bit of THE THREE AMIGO'S)... myself, Simon and Dan recorded an audio commentary track for THE DARK KNIGHT.

Discussions included...

"Did Batman break his one rule by the film's conclusion?"

"Should Harvey Dent's arc in the movie end with the hospital scene?"

"Was Heath Ledger's performance deserving of an Oscar?"

Warner Bros, the commentary is for sale if you wish to purchase it. Or hey, you can have it for free for a future "Holiday edition" or a "Deluxe Box Set" release. International fans, sadly the commentary is only in one language (Geordie) but hopefully you can understand just what the hell it is we are saying.

We thought it went about as well as it could for the first time. We might have rushed through what we were saying but we were quite nervous (you try and talk in front of a microphone for two and a half hours) but I'm sure we will get better over time.

Remember this was only our first one. After our ...

Christopher Nolan doesn't like doing them and so THE DARK KNIGHT Blu-Ray/DVD release went without an audio commentary recently. Possibly the biggest home video releases of all time went without my favourite DVD extra.

Well it's just not right is it?

Obsessed With Film will aim to put that right on Saturday night. Barring any last minute changes (which is very possible with us and I know later I might regret this post), myself, Simon Gallagher and Dan Powell (who is a friend of mine away from the site) will be sitting and down and going through the film frame by frame with our own unique and honest insights. We are aiming to do this maybe once a month or once every six weeks depending on how successful this first one goes down.

So here I am basically begging for your questions or thoughts. If there's anything about the film you want answered, our opinion on something specific involving the movie, anything about THE DARK KNIGHT, BATMAN 3 or even BATMAN BEGINS... please either leave it in the comments section here or e-mail us at editor @ obsessedwithfilm.com (remove the spaces) with the subject headline PODCAST, just so we know what it is.

The 81st Academy Award nominations have been announced by Forest Whitaker and Sid Ganis and they loved THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON didn't they?

THE DARK KNIGHT didn't get a Best Picture nom. When the history books are written you can't help but think that decision is going to come down and bite them in the ass. History won't be kind to this year's Academy voters for dismissing such a landmark film which will do more for cinema than THE DEPARTED, CRASH or MILLION DOLLAR BABY ever did.

And if THE DARK KNIGHT couldn't get itself a nomination, then you can't imagine any comic book movie ever reaching that height. And no summer blockbuster either.

The five they went for...

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON

FROST/NIXON

MILK

THE READER (really?)

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Robert Downey Jr. got himself a Best Supporting Nomination, really surprised at that. Loved the chuckle it got from the crowd. FROZEN RIVER I don't really know that much about, I'm surprised it got so many nods. Even Marisa Tomeii for THE WRESTLER surprised me.

Loved Mickey Rourke, Sean Penn and Frank Langella's nods for Best Actor, though I expected them all. Though it's Penn's award for the taking. I love Jenkins getting a nod because ...

Awards Daily have posted this very cool little table of domestic grosses for the movies expected to be in with a shout at Oscar nominations today...

As The Joker says, "it's not about the money. It's about sending a message".

THE DARK KNIGHT sent a message to the rest of the world in 2008 that a comic book movie could be as good as every other genre. That artistically it could match up to the best drama's, the best thriller's, that it could be as smart with as deeply intriguing themes and characters as any other film made today. Not since THE LORD OF THE RINGS have we seen a massive blockbuster do anything of the same.

It's an important film that history demands to remember with Oscar glory. It's not that it's the second biggest movie of all time and broke every single opening weekend record going. It's already in history books for that. Heath Ledger too has cemented his Hannibal Lector type status into the echelons of infinite time.

But the Oscars are important. They are remembered.

TITANIC was a majorly popular release in the late 90's, of course the biggest movie of all time and it still is despite Batman and The ...

The Music Branch Executive Committee of the Academy have reversed their decision on the disqualification of THE DARK KNIGHT'S great musical score and allowed it to join the Academy Awards race once again.

Variety say a committee came to the conclusion that Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard were solely responsible for how the score turned out and how full authorship.

Although I've yet to see many of the heavy awards buzz movies of 2008 yet (most of them haven't opened in this country), from what I've heard THE DARK KNIGHT has the best musical score of the year. Love this Harvey Dent tune... so hopeful, elevates his character in the first act into more than what was written I think.

And then goes so tragic...

The late reversal has not affected it's chances as the Academy Members are yet to receive their ballets.

The first time I saw THE DARK KNIGHT, I was left completely and truly speechless.

Now I knew going in it was going to be something special. Those early trailers we first caught glimpses of 12 months ago showed what an exciting movie Christopher Nolan looked to have created, a confidence and a "no holding back" attitude he brought to the table which took the cuffs firmly off his work in BATMAN BEGINS.

In the months leading up to the release it was impossible not to be sucked into the hyperbole surrounding THE DARK KNIGHT and in particular Heath Ledger's performance but once the credits rolled, I couldn't talk. I couldn't speak, I honestly couldn't believe I had seen that kind of movie that dealt with my favourite literary character, it went way beyond my admittedly insane expectations.

In BEGINS, I always felt Nolan was a little restraint in what he gave us because he felt he needed to re-introduce a character who had become lost in the absurdity that was Joel Schmacher's BATMAN & ROBIN. He was more interested in making a good origin story for Batman, than necessarily the best film he could make with the character. For THE DARK KNIGHT, ...

One day after the Academy Award nominations are announced for 2009 and Warner Bros. will re-release THE DARK KNIGHT with a nationwide U.S. release on January 23rd. No word on whether the movie will be returning to U.K. cinema's.

Clearly WB are hopeful for nominations for both the movie and Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker. Of course, any nominations for the film will generate general interest with those of the viewing public who might have dismissed a comic book movie the first time around and will also bring a celebratory feeling for comic book geeks who are seeing their medium recognized in quite a way it has never been before.

The move almost guarantees THE DARK KNIGHT will cross $1 billion worldwide as it's only $4 million short of that figure. It will stand beside TITANIC, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST as the only movies to ever achieve this.

If THE DARK KNIGHT can generate $77 million (a very healthy gross for a normal release should we not forget but this movie does keep breaking records) then it will become the biggest film of all time in the U.S, ...

Time to pour some cold water on some big stories released in the past 48 hours. Batman on Film have gotten in touch with WB rep's who confirm that THE DARK KNIGHT is still due for a re-release in January. I'm sure that will make a lot of you guys very happy indeed and hopefully it won't be restricted to just IMAX theatres.

Here's another thing you guys should know. Dark Horizons have updated their site with the news that their reliable source wasn't all that reliable when it came to the story involving George Miller and his JUSTICE LEAGUE comments on Sunrise Morning Radio Show.

It turns out Miller didn't even appear on the show, let alone discuss the project. So the story of his dismissal from the project is untrue, at least from that source as a basis.

As far as we are aware, Warner Bros. have shelved the project indefinitely, seeing they had a good thing going with the Batman franchise and they are looking to replicate that with movies for Green Lantern, The Flash, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman and a Superman reboot.

Looks like three viewings on the big screen is all I'm going to get for one of my favourite movies of all time.

Superhero Hype report that the plans to re-release THE DARK KNIGHT in January to help boost both the movie's Oscar chances and to pass the elusive $1 billion mark have now been scrapped. The movie won't be returning to theatres.

THE DARK KNIGHT grossed $996.1 million worldwide and is the second highest grossing movie in the U.S (behind TITANIC). The movie will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray at the beginning of next week and is expected to be one of the best sellers of all time.

At least seeing this great movie in High Definition as early as next week is a nice consolation, though I would have loved to have seen THE DARK KNIGHT hit top spot again during the usual "dead" January release season.

OWF critic Ray DeRousse, speaking July 21st 2008...

"What Ledger created is a character so bereft of fear and restraint that he instills both in everyone around him, including the audience.

Going far beyond what was written in the script, Ledger fleshed out The Joker with hideous physical mannerisms and quirks that belie the inner turmoil of the character. It is a rich, full-bodied, and tremendously charismatic performance.

This one is special, for the ages, and deserving of recognition".

Academy Awards Process as detailed by Awards Daily...

USA Today have gotten their hands on the exclusive reveal of how the much talked about Batman R.I.P storyline is set to wrap with Batman #681 which hits stores tomorrow, penned by Grant Morrison.

Could DC really pull the trigger and kill off Bruce Wayne, their most lucrative character who just this summer appeared in THE DARK KNIGHT and made $1 billion? The Batman franchise has never been bigger but at 681 issues, is the character done?
SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU HAVE BEEN READING THIS SERIES!

No he doesn't die, they haven't killed him off. Instead they are going for the sitcom ending of sending him away for a while, with the full intention of bringing him back at a later date.

The issue wraps with the caped crusader "so shaken by a secret from his past that a new Batman must be found".

Neil Gaiman is writing a two-issue tribute to Batman which will start at Batman #686, tentatively titled Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? Gaiman calls it his last Batman story and hints it could be the last Batman story ever.

The movie mirrors Alan Moore's Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, which was similar wrap-up of Superman in the mid 80's ...

The unsettling and highly memorable score that Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard composed together for THE DARK KNIGHT, a score that I mentioned back in July was a shoe-in for an Oscar nomination, has in fact been disqualified for consideration by the Academy.

Variety say the score is not elgible for consideration because the names of five individuals are on the cue-sheet for the music, though Warner Bros. claim the other three, music editor Alex Gibson, ambient music designer Mel Wesson and composer Lorne Balfe were only named so that they would get a cut of the royalties and as a dedication to their hard work, though their contribution to the actual score was minimal.

It's the same political reason why their score for BATMAN BEGINS three years ago was similarly rejected. You would have thought they would have learnt their lesson, especially with a score so cutting-edge and brilliant as THE DARK KNIGHT'S was, which was undoubtedly being setup for awards plaudits.

It's a real shame the best score of the year will miss out.

Hans Zimmer previously won an Oscar for his score to THE LION KING and in total both men have been nominated seven times.

Batman isn't just on the run from Gary Oldman's Comissioner Gordon and the whole Gotham Police Force after the events of THE DARK KNIGHT but he is also now being hunted down by Batman himself.

Variety say the mayor of the oil-producing city of Batman in South Eastern Turkey is suing director Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. in attempt to obtain some of the royalties from the near $1 billion movie.

Huseyin Kalkan, the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party mayor of Batman's case includes placing the blame for a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate on the psychological impact that THE DARK KNIGHT'S success has had on the city's inhabitants.
"There is only one Batman in the world," Kalkan said. "The American producers used the name of our city without informing us."
Right!

Because Batman in comics hasn't existed for 80 years right? Did they not hear about the t.v. show in the 60's with Adam West or the massive Tim Burton and Joel Schmaucher movies in the late 80's and 90's?

Or BATMAN BEGINS even in 2005?

The whole case resides on the damage the massive summer epic has caused on their city (which surely could only boost the economy from curious tourists ...

In the first part of a three arc interview with the Los Angeles Times, Brit director Christopher Nolan begs the question, "How many good third movies in a franchise can people name?".

It's a solid question and his perfect legacy so far with the character is something he wants to keep in tact, whether that means stopping now with the franchise or making sure if he was to do another movie... it's a story that will keep him interested for over two years to tell.

You can certainly see why history is against him. THE DARK KNIGHT was compared to THE GODFATHER PART II or THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Neither of those franchises recovered from how good those movies were and when you watch THE DARK KNIGHT... they threw all the eggs into that basket right there. How can anyone top or improve that, can it be done?

Nolan clearly wasn't thinking about the future. He was out to make the best film possible and that's probably why he succeeded where so many have failed. on the second throw of the dice. He thought big and delivered big. One of the biggest films of all time.

Nolan, who has been quite quiet since it's ...

Artist Lee Berjemo is an interesting figure in the shaping of Heath Ledger's look as the most famous comic villain in history... The Joker in this summer's THE DARK KNIGHT.

Back in 2006, when the popular rumor was that Australian actor Lachy Hulme was fan favourite to play the Crown Prince of Crime in the BATMAN BEGINS sequel, Berjemo came up with this concept drawing for what The Joker should look like based Hulme's appearance for Batman On Film.

What was so interesting about the image, apart from looking extremely creepy was that it was the first time The Joker had ever been portrayed with a "cut smile". A permanent scar which looks to have been crafted from a knife rather than from falling in the vat of acid.

It gave The Joker all kinds of added possibilities as to the mystery of his origins. Was he abused by someone, did he do it to himself etc.

Amazingly of course, based on this concept art.. Warner Bros. who smartly kept a close eye on fan talk and suggestions for THE DARK KNIGHT, modeled Heath Ledger's The Joker similarly to this look.

Now after much fan acclaim for the very modern feel to The Joker's look ...

I guess I can't avoid this story when Production Weekly, a trade magazine no less with many inside studio sources, have this week listed BATMAN 3 on it's development site with Chris Nolan's name attached to direct.

Presumably that means he has scribed his signature on the next film's contract. It's also claimed that pre-production will begin in February, which is a good six months earlier at least than the time between BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT.

Does this count as the official confirmation that we were waiting for?

I would suggest it certainly indicates that Nolan might not be directing another film between BATMAN 2 and 3 and what we do know for sure is that Nolan hasn't been as quick announcing his follow-up to THE DARK KNIGHT as he was with BATMAN BEGINS.

By October 2005, we knew that Nolan was to work on THE PRESTIGE as his next movie and both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman were already announced as being in talks for the film. This time around, we barely know what his next film will be, with small mutterings it could be a feature based on the classic 60's Brit t.v. show THE PRISONER.

Now of course this is ...
